One of my favorite museums in Nevada is the Silver State National Peace Officers Museum which was integrated in the jail behind the old Storey County Courthouse. The museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing history of law enforcement nationwide but also wild western law enforcement heritage. As a matter in fact the museum contains thousands of hats, guns, whistles, cuffs, sirens, photos, uniforms, handcuffs, items of the son of Sam murderer and police memorabilia. This also includes the 1930's Chicago Gangsters death mask of John Dillinger and even a Billy club that fires tear gas. Before it was ever museum however it was a longstanding jail for the notorious criminals in Virginia City Nevada and the Comstock Lode.  It also was the largest jail in the county during the 1800's and could hold as many as 40 prisoners.

When you wander the museum your going to see massive strap iron doors, steel lined rock walls and stone Kate's Peak Andesite floors so very little has changed. Despite it being a museum one of its biggest jewels is the jail which has changed very little over the years. The jail had ten sells five on the main floor and five on the upper floor above them with solitary confinement cells in the center of each row.
There was only one jailbreak that took placed here by a man they called "Red Mike" Langan who was an alleged murderer who escaped here in 1897. Red Mike was a brick layer in 1876 who helped rebuilt the courthouse and jail after the great fire. He knew that the walls had not been properly filled with rubble material as required therefore he was able to dig his way out. After the 1897 incident the country renovated the jail to prevent this from happening by reinforcing the cells with steel and hard rock. The jail served Storey County from 1876 all the way to 1991 the only reason why criminals were no longer held here is because their was no yard for the prisoners to go outside in and the law stated that prisons must have one and only one fire escape. The problem was is that this jailhouse was small surrounded by walls and many other structures leaving very little room for expansion. With one emergency existing the counties insurance carrier would no longer provide coverage for the jail to continue to operate.

More then often women and their children were also jailed here on the upper floor keeping them separated from the men downstairs especially after the Supreme Court in 1963 made a ruling that male and female prisoners would have to be segregated. Allot of women that were incarcerated here did time were mainly due to theft. Many of the women were widows left with young children because their spouses may have worked and died in the local mines. Most women were left in poverty unable to provide for their children so more then often they were caught stealing and jailed here. A fence was installed on the upper floor to keep the children from climbing over the railings and falling. Allot of times the guards at this prison would just leave all the doors unlocked and let those incarcerated mingle, play cards or walk around the outside of there cells. At times homeless women and there children would simply be housed here for temporary shelter.

Before the construction of the 1876 Courthouse the Great Fire in October 1875 destroyed the original one Storey County Courthouse. As a matter in fact I read that the fire broke out at Kate Shea's Boarding House I believe due to a coal oil lamp being tipped over. It burned about 2000 structures in fact almost all of Virginia City while leaving some structures unscathed the original courthouse was not one of them. The courthouse was so close to the boarding house that caught fire it really never stood a chance. After the great fire hydrant hose houses were constructed around town including one that was built on a wall above the jail to prevent this from ever happening again.

The new courthouse which would be completed in February of 1877 was built by Peter Burke and designed by a San Francisco architectural firm of Kenitzer & Raun. It had an Italiante style of archicture and 19th century opulence of law and order. The facade of the building would be painted with contrasting colors, elaborate iron work, polished wood interior and a pediment that included the date of construction. It cost $117,000 dollars to build the courthouse which was a drop in the bucket when you think about it considering how gorgeous this structure is. Despite that factor it still was the most expensive courthouse to be built until the Washoe Courthouse was constructed in 1911. The courthouse also had art deco light fixtures which today still can be seen here so if you visit its just something you should check out. Due to fires it was also built with large iron-sheathed vaults for records surrounded by brick walls to prevent another fire from destroying the jails records again.

Before you enter the courthouse pay mind to the life like sized statue of Justice which is the only one to grave the exterior of any Nevada building. It was made of Zinc and was shipped out of New York for $236. The statue is not blindfolded either which sparked some local folklore and rumors that this statue was only one of a few found in the nation. Most folks presumed that the reasoning behind the statue not having her eyes blindfolded was simply symbolic in nature because the Wild West needed justice to pursue crime and Storey County wanted its criminals to know they were not blind to handing out justice when necessary. The west was lawless and those that lived in it did not turn a blind eye to it especially Storey County. If you were caught robbing a bank, murder or any other crime more then likely you were brought to his jail then hung a short time later. Believe it or not the justice statue is not one of a few but in fact their are quite a few of these statues seen without their blindfolds throughout the country. Back in the 1800's many courthouses who ordered these statues had the option to receive them without there blindfolds over the eyes.

Walter Gist who was a California Police Chief owned a lifetime collection of police memorabilia especially badges. Gist wanted to preserve law enforcement history therefore you can see his collection in the old jail which today is the peace officers museum. As a matter in fact some of the US Law Enforcement memorabilia dates back to the 1780's which makes it some of the oldest to exist or be on display in the country. Their are more law enforcement badges here then found anywhere else across the US. The same location that the cities most notorious criminals shared space with cowboys and drunk miners at. What I really enjoyed about the museum is being that I live in Northern Nevada I was able to see relics from Reno's, Virginia City's, Tahoe's, Minden, Carson Cities early local law enforcement history near where I live today. A good example of local police memorabilia found here would be an old call box the last of its kind that came from the nearby city of Reno.

Many famous criminals and crooks were held in this jail that includes the murderer of Julia Bulette who was a beloved madam in Virginia City Nevada. John Milliam was found guilty of robbing and bludgeoning her to death even though he claimed he was innocent. He was hung at Boot Hill which today is part of Silver Terrace Cemeteries and spent time jailed here. Another man who went by the name of Peter Larkin was hung behind the courthouse after being accused of murder in 1877. His girlfriend Nelly lied in court to try to save him during a testimony only to recant her statements claiming that her dead husband was haunting her and eventually betraying Larkin which send him to the gallows. Today Larkin's ghostly screams can still be heard throughout the courthouse time to time. More then likely Larkin killed Nellie's husband due to some love triangle perhaps even jealous nobody knows for sure. Then again their is always a small part of you that wonders how many men were hung here that may have been innocent. Perhaps this does explain some of the haunting's that transpire here all due to the fact that some of the ghost may be restless because it simply was just not their time to go. We live in a society where justice is not always fear while some criminals go free sometimes innocents do not unfortunately therefore this jail will always be stained forever with death good or bad!

In 1861 Storey County was organized named after Captain Edward Storey who died in the 1860 Pyramid Lake War as a matter in fact you can see his grave site in Silver Terrace Cemetery. Virginia City has always held the county seat of government. Before the original courthouse burned down allot of local government functions were held at the original courthouse. When the new courthouse was built this changed and other buildings would be used. What had no changed is that since the 1870's criminals were held in the jail some indicted in the courthouse in the front of the building. This was the only jail in Storey County for many years up to four inmates shared a bunk and cell. Women were being incarcerated in the 1940's and were houses upstairs. The jail served the country till about 1986 then from 1987 till about 1992 the country contracted with the Carson City Sheriff's office for handling criminals. All functions of the jail ceased in 1991 but today the courthouse still does receive some use while the jail outback serves as the museum. Court filings are still handled in the courthouse which also services as quarters for local administrative offices and even a judges chambers. As of today the old courthouse houses the Clerk Treasurer, Assessor Comptroller, Recorder, County Manger and Commissioners. Although at times the courthouse may appear to be abandoned its a prime example of a historic structure in the wild west still in operation and fully maintained.

The courthouse is overshadowed like much of the town by Mt. Davidson which stands about 7,864 a historically significant mountain we climbed and is the highest point in Storey County Nevada. It really is the highest mountain in the Virginia Range and it can be seen from even Carson City below. Mark Twain mentioned the mountain in his book called "Roughing It". But as you enter the courthouse and as any criminal was convicted this would have been one of the last mountains they seen before being hung at the gallows. Other then that if you were to stand out back behind the jail giant stone walls surround this historic site therefore if you were a criminal you were definitely isolated from good views or the general population here. But if you were brought to boot hill to be hung you may have seen Mount Davidson or Sugarloaf Mountain below moments before a rope was put around your neck.

The curator told me that now and then she will get a few people who visit the museum and actually get paranormal photos unexpectedly. While my first investigation mainly focused on the history I will say that I thought it was strange that my camera took a photo all by itself when I sat it down for awhile to get dressed in a law enforcement uniform. I definitely am considering doing a second investigation of the jail in the future if we can get permission to investigate it during its off hours and have access to other areas that people are not allowed. I do believe that the stories of disembodied voices, being pushed, grabbed, feeling nauseous, capture EVP's, objects moving around by themselves, strange shadows being sighted and other forms of paranormal activity due hold truth here. Nobody has ever denied that this courthouse is haunted as a matter in fact their are only two courthouses of this kind the other being in Eureka Nevada and that one also has some ghost stories. It is simply logical to say that allot of the haunting's or paranormal activity that takes place in this small museum may be attributed to the police memorabilia. To put it bluntly some artifacts may be cursed or connected to a traumatic event therefore some unseen energies may have came with these relics of the past. When you walk around the museum one must consider that most of the badges or relics of the past at one time belonged to a criminal or an officer who is no longer walking this earth or are they in a ghostly sense?

Directly below is a more in depth vocal history that I recorded when talking to the curator its definitely worth listening to if your a history buff or you really want to learn more about this historic courthouse. Few people really understand the value in this courthouses history and the role it played during the Silver boom. Justice was served here based on wild western values, criminals were hung and thousands of people once sat in its courtroom during sentencing. The Storey County Courthouse and Jail have become a huge part of Virginia Cities history but also the museum boast some of the oldest finest law enforcement memorabilia in the national. With that being said you get a little of everything here history, mystery, architecture, tragedy and even honor all found within these brick walls. I have only given our viewers a small birds eye perspective but if you want to delve more into this place you will have to see the museum in person as their are many newspaper clippings, photos and articles to examine. My main goal is to help the preserve the courthouse by bringing more tourism to this location as the money they receive for admission and donations goes towards the upkeep as well as preservation of the museum to keep it open to the public. So by all means stop on by the museum for a gander it will be one of the best things you do while visiting Virginia City Nevada.
