After hiking in Wolf Creek it was just to exciting not to return a week later to delve deeper into the areas secrets. Like most of the sierras this area is your gateway to traversing deep into the Iceberg Wilderness. The first exploration of the area the sun went behind the mountains thus it gets dark out here very quickly. I would have to make sure we made it out here early enough to explore miles worth of the area so that next year we can possibly plan a camp out at this location.

Surprisingly it had been a busy day as we just finished hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail and driving backwards along a cliff. Now here we are hiking in an area that has some of the most secluded trails in all of Alpine County.  The road into Wolf Creek included a volcanic rock that overhangs near the main road and even a deep canyon with scenic views of the creek. One of those stops I made revealed a cave but its very hard to get to however where there are caves there is also creatures like Bigfoot that may possibly live in them.

Our first stop would take place in a small cabin village or area with a few summer homes. When we parked we had to make our way over the different channels that Wolf Creek branches out into in Union Valley. Tammy decided to go around she had so many bad snake experiences this year she doesn't want another one. Our adventure into Wolf Creek would began here as we started off touring old cottages and cabins.

Wolf Creek
Exploration 2

I thought that the cabins area would be intriguing to explore. If you guys remember back in the old days we visited allot of abandoned sites and it seems to be still a tradition we like to keep. The abandoned cottage under the shade with the creek trickling past its doorstep gave off a really creepy vibe. We entered the cabin where there was a kitchen, living room and two very small rooms big enough for a single mattress. The amount of animal droppings at this site were beyond normal you could tell this location had been abandoned for awhile.

Across from the cottage was a corral with a summer home attached to it. The summer home had a few other small structures on site we did not visit past the fence. It was obvious that someone at times used the summer home or rented the cabin. It didn't seem as old as the cottage we explored or some of the other sites.

It was strange how all of the cabins and structures were all near one another. There was an old green outhouse on the property and a barn on site. The barn had a stack of hay inside and there was a bunch of ropes hanging from wood beams. I am assuming the ropes are there so that whoever puts the horses in the barn can tie a toy on the rope to be played with. At first the ropes I thought had a sinister meaning until I see a dish pan tied to one of them at level with where a horses head comes to rest.

There was another cottage on site this one was wide open and appeared to also be abandoned. There was rotting food all over the kitchen, gun holster hanging in the foyer, two bedrooms both with dusty blankets laying wrinkled on the mattress and a very old stove inside. Whoever stayed here left almost everything behind you could still see a bottle of jam open as if someone made peanut butter and jelly forgetting to save everything. There were dishes in the sink and even a cupboard left open. I thought it was a bit odd and out of place looked as if something came in here ransacked the food out of the cupboards.

Just between the two old white cottages there was a set of tracks I discovered one of them had deep toe impressions. The tracks were a few inches deep and the one was much longer then my foot. My theory was that something came around for a meal maybe it curiously watched as those at one time living in these cabins cooked fresh deer meat. Its only mere speculation but we have no other theories to go on at this point. Your gateway to the Iceberg Wilderness sits along the backside of Wolf Creek an area that is very secluded and some parts even unexplored.

We would take our journey to the trails that is of course after the kids had me try to find a snake they spotted by the cabins and I used the outhouse. You can see the tracks we found in our videos section of our Wolf Creek addition to our site. You can also see the outhouse photo on our paracomedy page. So as you can see by reading our report they also coincide with the journey and content we bring to our viewers.

The gate to the trail was closed beyond here would be foot traffic only as we began to follow the Carson River which ran through a very large canyon that we hiked in. The trail into the wilderness was mild compared to Kongsberg. Although there were a few small rolling hills the trail the entire time nearly follows the river for almost 10 miles. Although at the beginning of the trail is a map of where this trail takes you and it could take years to see it all. This trail takes you to streams, lakes, peaks, canyons and hidden meadows. It intersects with quite a few other trails so our journey would only focus on the Wolf Creek Trail for a few miles in on this second journey.

My family really enjoyed the abandoned eerie village of cottages and cabins. They also seemed to enjoy the trail as we had a picnic right on the bank of the river where the kids played in the water and we ate pizza. Standing in the rivers water felt soothing however the view looking down the river looked as if it went on for miles. We had forest on both sides of us as the trail sat sometimes as high as 10' above the river banks.

The trail came across an area where rocks were bigger then the cabins we entered earlier some of them sat along the river while others up on the hill. A portion of the trail also passes the granite cliffs and what bothered us about them is that many of them contain dens. Such dens are home to bears, coyotes, foxes and mountain lions. I stressed to Tammy that we needed to be out of here soon otherwise something might be emerging out of them holes. It was not comfortable in this section of the trail anything could be in those caves just waiting for nightfall to set in.

We hiked to a very large open area and to our right was a massive mountain peak it still had allot of snow up on it. The canyons started to split up in different directions however we would not have enough time to continue as we also had to hit the upper trailhead. I felt as if I was in a land of paradise the creek trickled so beautiful past all the scenery we hiked through. Between the large rocks and massive woodsy canyon I felt like I could envision a land where dinosaurs once ruled this earth. It amazes me on how every location varies throughout the Sierras. There is no one area that has been the same every area is unique just as this wilderness.

We would eventually get back to the truck but we still had another hiking trail to explore. In the future our expeditions will traverse even further but for now we want to be able to learn these different places to help us better our research for future trips. Tammy and I would take this long dirt road up through Union Valley as it climbed up into an area that split off once more. We would pass a homestead possibly a rancher who has his home up here maybe a rangers station nonetheless there were horses which slowly watched us drive by.

When we arrived and parked at the trailhead there was not one single vehicle let alone hiker. I did hear a gun shot off in the distance but they were well far away from us. The area we parked at had many older alpine trees and rock formations amongst the flat area. It would climb and climb some more into the forest eventually to come out along a massive valley with rolling hills and mountains. The scenic beauty of the upper trail is amazing and within a couple miles was the river which you could hear racing in the distance.

We would make our way along a mountain side as this narrow trail followed a steep drop-off slowly descending down into this valley. I can only imagine that once you make it down into the canyon/valley that it would split off in various directions. We nearly hiked for a couple miles however nightfall was setting on in so we set up a break point where I could run my audio recorder and do a few bigfoot calls.

It didn't appear anything called back although there was some movement out there maybe an animal checking us out. I know that the kids and Tammy spotted massive bear tracks on our descent so my gun was ready just in case. I honestly hope I never have to use it but it is there if there is a naughty bear in the area.

I will add that we did hear a roar my thought was it probably was a mountain lion but the closer we arrived back at the car the more strange noises we heard from the canyon behind us. There was at least 3 sounds I could not identify maybe Bigfoot but who knows. Our recorders will not pick up sounds that are 1 to 2 miles away so even if we hear it our equipment will not pick it up. However these strange noises coming from the woods will spark future explorations in this region. I want to know what hides in these woods and the only way to know is to explore them.

Anyhow the sun went behind the mountains and we were in a massive canyon so thick that even on top of the mountain you cannot see down into it. That same canyon we sat in quiet listening and waiting. When I felt we had been there long enough we took our time hiking on back to the truck. I stayed in back everyone else in the front as I ran night vision video on the trail.

It was kind of hard to see out here the area is consumed with darkness caused from the thick foliage. There was an old gate back near the trail entrance where it is meant to keep the cattle from going into this wilderness area. We didn't experience much but it was a rush to be out here at night hiking this upper narrow trail. At night even though the view is scenic for miles you cannot see none of it its pitch black out here which makes it all the more interesting.

The steep sides of the trail gave off a feeling that anything at anytime could jump right down on top of you. It was nice being back at the car there wasn't a soul for miles one of the benefits of hiking around in this area. I also noticed the same truck parked out in the woods two weekends in a row. The first time the guys came back to the truck with a red light from an area off the trail this time they were gone prior to us leaving during dusk. Maybe we are not the only Bigfoot hunters in the area who knows.

Sadly it will be many months before we can explore the area more generally wilderness areas in this region can stay closed going into July as winter stays up here most of the year long. I enjoy this place there is so many sites to see hell alone the old cabins that sit along the creek are enough to spook a normal person. Although the area is more then often packed with campers I know there are many areas in these parts that yet remain to be seen.

It was nice to call it a night by the end of the day we had hiked many miles and see allot of cool places we can delve deeper into in the future. I look forward to exploring the Iceberg Wilderness in the future. If there was ever a home for such a cryptid to live this place has all the right elements. Most of the year its gated off so all the more reason for Bigfoot to have his way and this pristine land to himself.

Peace,
Lord Rick

This orb has a skull like face in the epicenter surrounded by a pattern that fills the inside of a corona of energy. It was captured in Wolf Creeks oldest cottage which sits desolate in deplorable condition.
