Silver Lake happens to be one of the larger lakes found in the sierras with treasure island its clear pristine water it truly is great for all water sports. I my first visit to Silver Lake I would do some fishing before heading off to climb Thunder Mountain which overshadows the lake. People stand on these shores who visit the Kit Carson Lodge for its fishing and boating.

Thunder Mountain is a beast no matter how you cut it this volcano was a force thousands of years ago. The entire mountain exploded with such force that it left volcanic rocks larger then hours miles away from its peak. Our goal would be to climb to its peak however getting there would take us through a series of bio diversities starting off in the Eldorado Forest.

We are nearly nowhere near the peak as we slowly are making a 2000' ascension along the ridge leading to the peak. Even a mile away you can see the narrow path meander up to the mountains higher ridge where cliffs grace both sides. We would have miles to go before reaching our destination so all that was left was to enjoy the view.

As we climb higher towards the peak we get previous views of Caples and Kirkwood Lakes. It is so amazing how from above these bodies of water are so blue. This country is pure practically untouched by man and the way early explorers have seen it is the way you are seeing it as well.

This region is known for its lush meadows each one of them just as this gives off some really great views. Just beyond the trees below is the winter sports capital known as Kirkwood. Meadows such as these were used to drive Sheep, Horses and Cattle through at times. Notice the many wild flowers they grow in heavy abundance in show meadows today from June till about October.

As you come out of the forest and follow the ridge to your left are stellar views of Kirkwood. Kirkwood is considered a community. Below you can see the lodge, housing, cottages and other parts of the resort. Kirkwood resides in this canyon overshadowed by many various peaks including Sentinel Peak.

This clip starts off near a crevice and trust me if you were to fall into it that would spell death. You can see that were starting to get more into a rocky terrain and it just gets more intense the higher we ascend. But now you can also see Thunder Mountains summit within our reach all that is left is to continue the climb up and this is where it gets fairly steep.

We are only a couple hundred feet from nearing the summit. After coming around the backside of the mountain you can now see Silver Lake a couple thousand feet below. The winds were rather intense here so our goal would be to find a place nestled near some rocks to have dinner at for the evening.

I went on alone without my kids to make my way to the top of the summit where volcanic spires are found all around me. On one of side of the summit you have this massive green meadow while the other peers down onto the Silver Lake Basin and Amy Lake. The greatest rewards of this expedition is standing on top of this once active massive volcano.

I thought these two impressions were very odd finds not sure what made them but its just not something you see regularly considering how deep they were in the earth. The second impression looked more like something stood down on the tip of its foot. Only later would I actually find a large hand print while making my descent at sunset.

The sun is setting which makes the volcanic rocks look like a bright red. Many of the rocks are larger then houses while others are lava vents. Even though today the volcanoes are extinct the geological forces of nature are left behind all the way to the tree line where we were descending.

This is one of the many volcanic spires found throughout the Thunder Mountain region. As we enter back into the forest at sunset I had hopes to experience something strange. Afterall the Eldorado National Forest is well known for having Sasquatch activity. Its a thick forest full of heavy foliage, rock formations and beautiful nature.

These volcanic spires tower above us as we head right through them. It was very obvious that the lava flowed out of various parts of the mountain not just the peak. Today such rock formations serve as a reminder of the past on how the sierras were formed. The rocks you see to the right of the video were lava vents and it is highly likely a vast cave system resides under them.

Our second expedition is underway as we head into Pioneer Country. Just as Thunder Mountain was ancient this expedition would focus more on the historical aspect of the area which would include trips to Amy, Granite, Hidden and Silver Lakes. Also we would visit the Allen Ranch and Plasse Trading Post. We had many miles ahead of us in our journey these same roads we are one were once used by horse pulled wagons.

Camp Minkalo was once a girls fire camp in the 1850s which was gifted to the boy scouts. The boy scouts never used it due to a portable water issue thus they began to demolish all of its structures, Today the structures are merely foundations and piles found along the shores of Silver Lake. Behind us I could see the spires of Thunder Mountain reminding me that I once stood on its peak staring down onto this camp.

When you start to pull away from Silver Lake the hike becomes very primitive. We were heading off deeper into the Eldorado National Forest on what is known as the Granite Lake trail which splits to the left. The right path takes you along Silver Lake to a historical site called Plasse's Resort. Our journey would began here as we would ascend eventually to Squaw Ridge.

Our first body of water we would encounter is Amy Lake. You still can get great views of Thunder Mountain here before you began ascending deep into the forest. Amy Lake is rather round and fairly shallow but it is very serene here. There are no boats or anyone fishing its just a quiet spot to reflect preparing you for the adventure that awaits.

Granite Lake is much larger then Amy Lake in addition this body has various islands you can swim to. A portion of the trail follows the lake shore and the scenery here is gorgeous. We had lunch on the peninsula out over the water and took sometime to absorb the beauty of the Eldorado Forest around us.

I found this track near Granite Lake its extremely old but what caught my attention of it was the girth of the impression. Whatever made it had a very wide foot and some very large toes. The big toe portion of the track was twice the size of my own. I do believe this is a genuine Bigfoot track that may have been made when the creature bent down to perhaps gather some water.

After a few miles of hiking we finally reached hidden lake where we would break at. The lake is much smaller then Amy or Granite. However this lake is full of ducks, marshy shores and its overshadows by granite cliffs. I found a very strange den on the other side of the lake who or what used it is hard telling. From here on out we would began to climb to the Carson Emigrant Trail.

The woods and foliage are much thicker surrounding hidden lake then others we have visited. I went into the bush to look for tracks did not find any but I did get muddy which is what it is all about. Hidden Lake is less visited then other locations in this region so its a good location to gather Bigfoot evidence.

The final ascension would take us up through a series of granite and volcanic rock formations. This ascension at times would take us along steep drop offs however its one of the only routes you can take to get to the Allen Ranch which resides on the ridge above us.

We have finally made it onto the old Carson Emigrant Trail at one time called the old Mormon Emigrant Trail. At one time thousands of wagons pulled by horses passed through here in hopes of making it to cities like San Francisco. Also at this location is the Allen Ranch which is full of meadows including this old wooden collapsed historic structure.

All that is left of the Plasse Trading Post are signs which commemorate its existence. Meat and other supplies could be trading to the emigrants who made their pilgrimage on the Carson Emigrant Trail. Plasse would drive cattle and horses which later he would sell to those pioneers who passed through here. Life was harsh in the sierras and this trading post was located at the halfway point to the California valley.

I am standing on a peak where on one side you can view the Eldorado Forest and the other the Mokelumne Wilderness. Besides the rare wild flowers that grow on this peak this is one of the best areas to view mountains 360 degrees. You can also see below the Plasse trading post site and the trail that takes you up to Long Lake.

This is one of the many gravesites found throughout this hillside. Some emigrants died if illness others the elements. Many of them were buried on the surrounding hillsides of the trading post. Although most graves are unmarked it is hard telling how many are buried here it could be a few or it might be a few hundred. Afterall a quarter of a million emigrants in the 1800s came right through this very area you see in this clip.

This would be our last video clip as we began our descent into the Silver Lake Basin. The trail is very steep at times hugging very tight edges. It would take us a couple hours to get back to the truck which would take us around Silver Lake during a severe thunderstorm and through the camp that Plasse built a life at. What other secrets would await us in the future?
