The mouth of Squaw/Olympic Valley takes you through a lush meadow known as alpine meadows. At one time two mining towns use to reside within the mouth of the canyon in the mid 1800s. The towns went by the name of Knoxville and Claraville. I have done some research only to find out that when the miners came to this valley they were having issues with a very large bipedal, 500lb, tall creature with reddish brown fur near the meadow where the Truckee River Crosses. Prior to that the area remained a hidden gem for hundreds of years and was more then likely the hunting grounds during the warmer months for the Native Washoe Tribe. Surrounded by two creeks and the Truckee River this area was very appeasing to all those who came here seeking the wealth of this rich land. More or less I just am driving through the valley filming where we would park up near Shirley Canyon. I will start off where the Olympic torch burns and take you into the heart of Olympic Valley. Our day has only just begun we were getting ready to set off on an epic adventure to an area that has some of the earliest pioneer Bigfoot stories told in the high sierras. A place where the famous Grosh brother died tragically and a terrible air tram collision took place but also a valley filled with history! The Southern Pacific Railroad at one time did own the valley I believe they wanted to have the train come through here but it never transpired perhaps due to the ruggedness and perhaps this is why Bigfoot in this region still lives on!!
Shirley Canyon resides between the Granite Chief Wilderness and Squaw Peak all part of the Tahoe National Forest. You begin to climb up into the canyon which will take us easily a couple thousand feet through lush forest, along Squaw Creek and falls.Along the way I come across a very large shelter made from extremely large logs not saying Bigfoot built it but still a few of the trees used in its design weigh easily a thousand pounds. The canyon itself is like a lost world it was carved out by thousands of years of various geological forces such as volcanoes, glaciers and flowing water. Therefore the ascension is quite steep full of giant granite slabs and rocks. When you reach nearly the top of the canyon a very serene lake awaits which is overshadowed by Granite Chief Peak. There are many wild flowers and beautiful scenic views along the way your sure to enjoy. Since it was Fathers Day the canyon was bustling but at times it gets remote it just depends on where you want to climb and journey at. This is a FIVE star hike my friends therefore as my Fathers Day gift I was treated to something magnificent that I get to share with my friends. One of the Grosh brothers went up into this canyon he died tragically even more so many thought he was the original discoverer of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City. The mouth to this canyon is overgrown its very easy to miss hiking up into it but if you decided to conquer it you can cool off with a nice brew at High Camp just above this green paradise. This is one of NW Tahoe's best kept secrets it gets five out of five stars from PGS!

The final jewel which resides above Shirley Canyon is High Camp. The 1960 first televised Winter Olympics were held here within the valley itself. I thought the ice hockey was played at the rink at High Camp but in fact it was played at the Blyth Arena just below no biggy. High Camp has great views of Lake Tahoe and the region. When we arrived everything was closed it was Fathers Day however when open they have a pool, hot tub, bar, cafe, ice cream shop, Olympic Museum, tennis courts and ice hockey arena. After the mining towns in the valley below proved less lucrative and were abandoned the Southern Pacific Railroad purchased the land. When they did not build a railroad pass through here they deeded the land to a famous Skier known as Wayne Poulsen who eventually brought in an investor Alex Cushing which led to the building of the ski resort you see today and High Camps ski courses. They also have an ariel tram which in 1978 was responsible for the deaths of four individuals and injured numerous riders when two of the cable cars collided. One of the cables sliced right through the tram car. Due to high winds the tram was closed or we would have ridden the 2000' descent so we would eventually have to get back down into Shirley Canyon back into the valley below. Among the oddities found here at about 8k are these pods which pop when you squeeze them and some strange vocalization perhaps an EVP. Over the years High Camp has been the center stage for world class snowboarders, skiers and figure skating. You will have to accept my apology the winds were so high you really cannot hear me very well sorry but we made it and we did it without ever taking the tram. I wish the winds were not so strong but everyone gets it great views of the Granite Chief, Squaw and many other prominent peaks.
The tram was out of service for the day so we had no choice but to make a full descent through Shirley Canyon and back down into Squaw Valley over 2k below. What is there not to like? Along the way will pass a gorgeous hidden alpine lake, various waterfalls and lush forest including a monstrous tree. The canyon is very steep therefore you can see that cliffs kind of line its walls as we rock scramble to reach the forest floor. There is a story about one of the Grosh Brothers who discovered rich silver in what is known today as Virginia City. When one of the brothers passed away the other one set off into Squaw Valley trying to push through this very canyon. Sadly the brother died due to severe frostbite in both legs during a blizzard where he refused to have them amputated. If he would have made it over the mountains to file his claim he would have been accredited with the discovery of the Comstock Lode. Early explorers like Fremont and even the Grosh brothers would have probably seen the same things you are seeing in this clip. Back in the mid 1800s some of the miners were terrified of a Bigfoot like creature that use to cross the River below which according to the Washoe who were aware of it claimed it was aggressive. This canyon seems to be a focal point for Bigfoot sightings perhaps because it serves as a gateway into the Granite Chief Wilderness and many other remote peaks which are nearly inaccessible. Remember it is safe to take your dogs or even your kids through the canyon as long as you use proper caution. and do not let them out of your sight. If your looking for a five star hike with the family this would be it just keep in mind you will need some lower body strength and good footwear if you plan on conquering paradise! I put together clips from my descent its a cozy little hike so many quiet places to take a dip or sit on a rock and just enjoy the view.
