In the mid 1800s three entrepreneurs named Evans, Askey and White built a two story frame house that served as lodging and a grogshop. They called this place the Louisiana House however in 1862 a fire burned down Jackson destroying this wooden structure. The brick foundation is all that remained so it was rebuilt on top of it and renamed the National Hotel.

It is one of the oldest establishments still operating in CA. The area was in use in 1849 so your talking well over a century its been in use. Back in the day it was a grocery and general provision store right near the spring. On the back side of the hotel is a well actually the old well where the spring once stood. Hell you can fish for trout right in the stream behind the hotel.

Although when the Hotel was rebuilt with two stores the third floor you see in the photos was not added till way later. It was made to look old like the hotel but its not. The entrance to the hotel saloon faces all of Main Street. The stairs are painted red and rise right from the street to the hotel rooms on the second floor. The registration booth is all made of dark wood. They have these old movie viewers with girls in bikinis.

Many historical figures visited the National such as Hetty Green, Leland Stanford, President James Garfield, President Herbert Hoover, Will Rogers, Movie Director John Ford, John Wayne and even a Yugoslavian royal named Paul. They even say the bandit Black Bart stayed here.  Many signs are found throughout the saloon one near by states this below.

One reads, "This establishment is owned and mismanaged by a member of E.C.V. [E Clampus Vitus] 49." "49" is a reference to the "James Marshall Watering Hole" chapter designation. Another bronze heart-shaped plaque points out that fifty yards to the east "lay" the Botilleas Bordellos. For many years, the marker reads, the houses of prostitution flourished until "this most perfect example of free enterprise was padlocked by unsympathetic politicians." The historical reminder was "erected" in 1968.

Below is some history and haunts more in depth taken from the website. They had another website that was better but its been taken down perhaps because the property is now being sold. I knew it would be for sale the bartenders told me this back in May of 2008 and one of them told me they wish they could buy it and fix up the place a little more.

The national is a real popular place for the Skeleton Crew MC we returned a lost phone to one of the brothers back in June of 2008. Since I have been affiliated with biker clubs in the past and since I have plans to go back to CA I will promote them and you should also along with DJ Gavin who made my time at the National Memorable.

The National Hotel in Jackson is perhaps the longest continuously operated privately owned business in the State of California. It is a reminder of, and a memorial to, the glorious "Gold Rush" era of the Great State of California. In the heart of the Mother Lode, one of the few examples of the architecture of those monumental times which helped shaped California's history, still exists. When serving as a Wells Fargo Stage depot, the Hotel was host to gold and silver barons who rested, dined and refreshed on their way to oversee their mine holdings in Jackson and upcountry in the town of Volcano. Some traveled further on over the majestic Sierra Mountains, through Kit Carson Pass, down into Nevada. Present day visitors claim that on a quiet night they can hear the click of the ivory ball on the roulette wheel, the raucous laughter and bragging of the miners and the silent rustle of lady's taffeta petticoats. True or not, when visitors walk through the doors of the National Hotel, they have stepped into more than one hundred-fifty years of California history. Incidentally, for those who believe in the afterlife, ghosts have been reported and in some cases" observed and recorded" by numerous "ghost hunters" over the past years. This historic landmark is operating today and still offers entertainment and refuge to travelers and guests from all major population points in Northern California and beyond. The Hotel offers twenty-five rooms, including suites, most of which have recently been remodeled. Rooms are furnished with period antiques and some baths feature an old fashioned claw foot tub. Select rooms and suites offer air-conditioning but no room phones. Phones have never made their way into this throwback in time. Television sort of falls into the same category, nice, but too modern and not authentic to the decor. But, if guests ask, there are a few rooms with TVs available. Guests are usually content with just listening in the night to the whispered voices of those in the past who may have slept in the very same room. Guests like John Wayne, who was photographed tending bar in the original wild west saloon, director John Ford, Prince Paul of Yugoslavia, U.S. Presidents Hoover and Garfield and Will Rogers have all signed the register at the National Hotel. Black Bart, Mark Twain and Wyatt Earp reportedly were guests. Leland Stanford made the hotel a regular stopover on his way to survey his mine holdings in the Mother Lode.

Around 1849 three men, Ellis Evans, D.C. White and Armstrong Askey decided the growing town of Jackson needed a hotel. They constructed a two story frame building above the two springs which had served for years as a trail stop and watering hole for travelers. The Hotel first opened in 1852. They named the new hotel Louisiana House. In 1862 the "Great Fire" ravaged Main Street, destroying the Hotel. Undaunted, they rebuilt the Hotel on a brick basement during the Civil War and christened it The National Hotel. In the 1920's and '30sthe third floor and building extension were added.

About

The Hotel and the property it occupies are for sale BY OWNER. Permanent antique fixtures and numerous antique furnishings are included. Additionally, all required licenses including A.B.C. sales permits for liquor, wine and beer, are included.

In brief, the approx 18000 sq ft building is comprised of four floors. The bottom floor contains a restaurant; restaurant kitchen, prep room, walk in, etc., and an antique store. The antique store can easily be converted into additional dining, including numerous alcoves and segregated rooms for more intimate dining. The restaurant decor is consistent with the old west theme. Meal preparation areas measure approx 700 sq ft. Dining area as presently configured; approx 2200 sq ft (expandable to add another 1400 to 1600 sq ft). Dining room can be accessed through front entrance down stairs from Main Street sidewalk or from a side entrance across a foot bridge from the public parking structure. The rear of the restaurant looks out at a stream. This floor also houses the boilers which heat the hotel. They were replaced and modernized in 2000.

Second floor (main floor) comprises the original Gold Rush saloon and back bar. This area has adequate space for dancing and seating or a honky-tonk piano sing along party. Behind the saloon is the Hotel check in "cage". Further down the hall are rest rooms, offices, bar storage, a library or playing card room, and five guest rooms.

Third floor makes up the majority of rooms and suites. An owner's or manager's large apt with deck overlooking Main Street historic Jackson is in the hotel front. Laundry room and third floor hospitality  landing are here as well.

Fourth floor includes additional rooms and suites. modernized within the past ten years.

Oh, and the GHOSTS are free. They're worth something, but we don't know how much! Many "ghost hunters" have filmed and detected ghosts in the Hotel over the years. A women and her small dog have been noted by several different ghost hunters. A women did die in the Hotel (circa 1920'2) and she did have a small terrier type dog.
