As we journey into Hercules Canyon the mountains begin to close in on us. On a hillside are numerous wild mustangs which get started by the jeep as we close in on a small pond where much of the wildlife in the area converges. Life was harsh in the west water was limited and it was extremely remote. As you can see not much has changed come journey with us on this jeep road to Hercules.
This road takes us up into the Wonder Hercules Mining District which today has seem some recent revitalization. The district overshadows the town site deep below the canyon and overlooks badger flat where the town site of Wonder City resides. From the top of the mining district you can sort of put the size of the area into perspective and enjoy the serenity of the cattle grazing along its ridges.

This is one of the main mines within the reaches of the town site. The only entrance into the mine is sealed with steel bars. This could be due to poor air quality or dangerous shafts within. If you pay really close attention one can see when my flashlight hits the silver particles it twinkles. These were twinkling dreams for the miners back in the day who opted to become wealthy some day.
We have arrived at the town site of Hercules a silver mining camp as one can see very little remains except for a few rusty cans, two miner cabins, collapsed tram system, ore chutes, piles of wood and a TNT canister. Near the cabins is a secondary sealed off silver mine. Hercules had a post office during its boom in 1906 and also a large hotel called the St. Francis which burned to the ground.

This is a segment from our journey from Hercules back through Dixie Valley towards the monolithic Fairview Peak which is an earthquake hot zone. The journey at night only allows us to see shadows of the massive peaks that surround the region. Its a lonely road to nowhere as we are heading towards the Lincoln Hwy. the loneliest road in America. This is a very desolate area of Nevada which is why most towns struggled to stay alive as water was very limited and goods were expensive. Towns like Hercules may have been lost due to time, elements and vandals. But they are not forgotten thanks to explorers like us who dare to traverse old wagon roads such as the one you see here in this nightrider video.
