The Forestdale Divide was formed by once active volcanoes today most of the area is encompassed by the Eldorado Forest. It is full of lakes, pools, offbeat trails and even the PCT. We had meant to hike to Hell Hole lake but overshot it ending up hiking around the divide region.
The divide is truly nestled in seclusion as it resides between the Carson Pass, Blue Lakes, Hope Valley and Mt. Raymond region. We are in the middle of nowhere their are no trails we are just surrounded by large rocks, forest and dry creek beds which normally are active in the Spring. Although it is nice to hit the trails its also great to truly explore places nobody has ever journeyed in before.

The divide is full of many hidden ponds and lakes. Some of them are only accessible on foot such as this shallow pool of water which is full of turtles. Although the most well known are the Lost Lakes found in the divide anywhere along it other ones can be found.
The Forestdale Divide is a road that follows Forestdale creek. At times the Pacific Crest Trail crosses this rugged road which as one time served the miners of Summit City back in the 1860s. Thus the road is very rugged at times parts of it are bumpy other times half of it is washed out. Towards the end of the video is a 3' deep crevice getting stuck could mean the end of a wonderful journey. You have to love to offroad to ascend up into the divide which narrows and elevates the further you take the road until it reaches Big Blue Lake! We were actually trying to get to the pools not Hell Hole lake however Hell Hole is on our list of places to adventure at!

The Sierra Crest Line and its low saddle is what forms the divide. It begins as a large valley and narrows into a canyon. The divide reaches an elevation of over 8k eventually leading you to Lost Lakes. During the silver boom this would be the route you would take via wagon. Other well known sites surrounding the divide is the Elephants Back, Lost Lakes and Pools.
The pools resides below the divide where the canyon narrows and ends. You can take the PCT to hike down to them which is only a few hundred feet below the road. Standing near the pools allows you to look up at the divide and down the canyon into the valley below. It is absolutely scenic and worth the jaunt! We thought it was Hell Hole lake boy was my GPS off but nonetheless every pond and lake is pristine in the sierras meant to be enjoyed.

Although the pools contain no fish we found an abundance of frogs here. Just above the pools are great views of the Elephants Back and the massive valley where the road begins. Most people camp in the valley a few miles where the divide starts. Meanwhile we are near the saddle of the Sierra Crest Line. So my kids caught a bunch of frogs and I just enjoyed the view.
Once again more scenic footage of the divide keep in mind we are only showing you a small area of it. The divide spans a few miles wide by at least 6 to 8 miles in length so its a large area full of volcanic peaks, blankets of forest and massive rock formations. Perhaps a bit alluring my only wish to to have spent more time here which gives us a reason to go back.

Although we have found Bigfoot evidence in other regions surrounding the divide I thought I would make an attempt to find some tracks. I did find some downed brush but a bear could have done it. The sun glistens off the pools and between that with the volcanic rocks it is a world in itself. We cannot wait to return to further our research surrounding the divide. Let me make a correction this is called "The Pools" our GPS was off sorry!
As we begin to make our journey back to the truck on foot you can see to the left of the video Elephants Back. They call it this due to the geological form it has taken on which stands at a little over 9k and is part of the PCT. As we descent we will work our way out of the canyon and eventually back into the lush valley. We will RETURN!
