Donner Lake Railroad Tunnels

If all of you remember when I first moved out this way one of my first locations I visited was the Donner Lake pioneer site where members of the Donner Party perished due to being caught in a snow storm. Those pioneers were caught up here in October in snow thus they wanted to wait out the winter and most of them ended up dying or eventually eating eachother. So cannibalism did take place but eventually despite its harsh winters it did bring into the area the railroad high up on Donner Summit which btw overlooks the lake below.

I have spent three years dreaming about visiting this place I know other groups have worked with it a little and its haunted. Its haunted mainly by the Chinese who lost their lives building various long tunnels through the side of Donner Summit. It was the only way to get the transcontinental railroad to cut on over the sierras all the way to California's oceanic coast!

This jaunt would be more challenging although the tracks are gone the tunnels are filled with water, snow, waterfalls, ice then between each tunnel allot of snow to trek through along the side of steep drop offs which overlooks the lake below.

When we pulled on up their was a foreboding feeling you had this big red metal gate that said no trespassing of course in warmer months people hike, ride bikes and four wheels in this old railroad bed. It just happened to be we were here the wrong time of year so it made our investigation a bit more trying.

Past the gate is the first tunnel which btw is much newer since the road passes over it but just a few feet from this one is a much longer tunnel system which has got to be almost a 700' long. You could just stand in front of it and see that it was blasted right through the mountain into the rocks with a small glimmer of light on the other end. I would find tracks later in the expedition in between finding them outside of each tunnel Richard my son and I heard the loud cracking of a branch as if something went up into the woods between each lengthy tunnel.

This tunnel had a creek flowing through it my feet became wet early on during this trek which was okay its expected. The Spring in the sierras is a time where your going to get wet but its also a time to see some seasonal falls and things like that. The one annoying thing about this place is that it was windy the wind just coerced through the tunnels right through you which made it hard for me to do EVP sessions. I know the Ovilus said some very odd things in relation to the tunnel and hell maybe it was spot on who knows. For example in one area of the tunnel it told us to run while I did seem to capture something sinister looking in my photos. While another time it said mercury which makes sense that it would seep through the walls from underground. Then it also said after we walked through water leaking through the tunnels ceiling that we needed oars as if you visit our EVP's page you can hear the audio from an area where we get completely soaked at from water pouring through the crevices in the ceiling due to snow melt. One of the words that came across it also said the word "Outside" the moment we stepped out of the dark tunnel. It sure makes you wonder at times how this thing says certain words related to the environment you are in. I find it rather entertaining whether its a reliable ghosthunting tool that remains to be seen!

It was obvious that the tunnel had suffered years of graffiti hell my son found a can of spray paint and painted Lord Rick with 2014 lol. I guess that is okay considering some of the tunnels are in a state of disrepair years from now they probably will be sealed off considering water pours through the rocks and they are not very stable anymore. If a railroad train went through them today they would collapse trust me on that.

When we came out of the tunnel we could see Donner Lake we also seen a semi trailer all mangled that went off the road and was hanging on the side of the cliffs which encompass the area. Its obvious some people met their doom just driving along the steep roads which surround Donner Lake.

The next tunnel had a metal exterior which eventually burrowed through the rock. It had concrete or stone walls that were very smooth and it only ran a little over 100'. Prior to entering the tunnel I found these odd tracks which had these toe impressions it was strange and I did document the find. This is why I like hiking in snow because I can track bigfoot and other cryptids to see where they are traveling at. Something walked through the first major tunnel and made that impression was it a bigfoot?

We would come across a few tunnels like this rather rectangular inside with stone walls even found a few foundations perhaps old cabins or snow shelters. In one of the tunnels was a wall my son climbed up on inside it may have collapsed or been used by railroad workers to get on top of their train cars its hard to say because everything inside and outside of the tunnels is crumbling.

The next tunnel we went in had to be at least a half of mile maybe more inside the mountain. It started off as rectangular but eventually it carved right through the stone. You could not see the light on the other end then again the tunnel kind of bends to your right when you get about halfway into it. The only other light is these open slats carved into the tunnel on the left side about 15' above the tunnels floor. Otherwise without those it would be pitch black also inside the tunnel is an area you can leave the tunnel and step outside which gives you some really awesome scenic views of Donner Lake below. My son and I were alone in the tunnel when we heard a voice it was strange sounded like someone screamed it was chilling.

Their was an area of the tunnel where it collapsed so a massive snow drift nearly blocked our passage about half way on in. This tunnel was an amazing place because of its massive size throughout and massive steel beams holding up tons of rock from Donner Summit above. Also inside was this massive sheet of ice and wall of ice that was fun trying to cross no less pretty amazing.

We finally made our way out of that tunnel only to come across another massive long tunnel although this one was not as long it still had allot of cold water in it and water was just pouring down. When we came out of that tunnel a dog came up to us it wanted us to pet it so that was a really nice site to see.

Also outside of that tunnel is what is called the great wall it was built by the Chinese and although maybe a couple hundred feet of it stands. It truly is an architectural wonder as it stands about 20' high also and we climbed on top of it to get some better scenic views for the website.

After the wall the road for awhile was good or railroad bed we even saw a seasonal creek with a waterfall. Further down the bed was these foundations or slabs with these iron pieces embedded within it. After we went past this the snow became very difficult to traverse at times it was up to even my knees but we kept pushing on. Eventually I walked on top of these concrete tunnel above a set of newer tracks I was standing right over the new railroad line and this one probably was built because it was much safer then the tunnels we just traversed. Please make note of it that once you start traversing the old rail bed along the new set of tracks their is not much more to see and the trains are very active here so if you decide you want to check this place out please use caution.

At this point their were no more tunnels but the snow, trees, scenic beauty, waterfalls and seasonal creeks really were awesome to see. However we were now facing nightfall as the sun began to go behind the mountains and we had over 3 miles back to the truck. I did find a few more foundations in the woods left over from when the tunnels were being erected I also found a smaller section of the great wall here. I am not sure what is more intriguing the fact that these massive tunnels were built in the 1800's by hundreds of immigrants who died in dynamite disasters or the fact that their is a great wall in the United States very few know about!

I did sit down for awhile had a sierra brewery beer then smoked me a bowl to just take in the tunnels and scenic beauty. My main focus on the way back would be to photograph all the graffiti which some of it was beyond art that is how awesome it was. I did see at times symbols of the occult and Sue pointed out to me what looked like an alter inside one of the tunnels. I do believe I read that some people go to the tunnels to practice witchcraft or play with the occult. Some of the spray paint in the tunnels takes on a life of its own just as Sue said at night it probably does to within these dark tunnels.

Sue and Jarrod stayed almost a mile ahead of us I stayed back to finish filming and capturing artistic wall art. When I almost made it to the last tunnel a fresh track was there it had I believe four very large toes and it was made within probably an hour of us pass through here. I believe it is something cryptid and I did collaborate my finds with Sue which she also stated she found a weird track. It seems to me something uses these tunnels mammal or beast to traverse the summit and at one point earlier in the hike I heard it possibly between the weird vocalization to the branch cracking. So I feel that the possibility of haunting's and cryptids could both be present at the Donner Summit.

So all in all we had gotten three strange tracks back here we also did at least a hundred EVP sessions. I really want to hit a home run with this place its a great site for ghost the cryptid part was just something extra I stumbled upon. Of course it is not a surprise the tunnels grace the top of Donner Summit so when you see our photos your going to see their is nothing for miles but woods, cliffs, peaks etc its a very remote location and it is in Sasquatch country believe me lots of sightings take place surrounding this very region.

When we made it back to the truck it felt good to warm up I do feel some tunnels were more foreboding then other tunnels. I also felt in certain parts of these tunnels great discomfort at times I thought I heard voices or moans or strange echoes. With the wind howling and water dripping I cannot say for sure but they are very creepy especially in the early Spring where they are nearly impossible to traverse due to snowfall.

The ride back along Lake Tahoe was nice by then it was nightfall so it was time to rest because in a matter of hours we would have to get up early and do this all over again only this time instead of the Ca wilderness we would venture into the Nevada wilderness to a place called Grantsville.

This should put it into perspective that the water in the tunnels can be almost knee deep. If you own camera equipment be prepared to not only get your feet wet but to take showers as in the Spring natural waterfalls seep through the tunnels ceilings. So wear a good hat possibly even a poncho if you want to stay dry however if your like me and do not care then go for it its the cleanest shower you ever will take and perhaps the coldest lol.	This obviously is the wreckage of a tractor trailer and the driver could have met his doom afterall the curvy road resides just above this cliff. Donner Lake seems to have a history of tragedy all the way from deadly traffic accidents to the Donner Party who resorted to cannibalism in the 1800's to survive that massive winter storm that swept through the area in mid October. This region was hard on the pioneers even for those Chinese who built these tunnels at the summit.

Both sets of tracks were found at different locations and both tracks also left the tunnels perhaps using them to move to and from the summit. The tunnels reside just below the peak which is heavily wooded and full of cliffs. So you have the elements of bear and mountain lion. However what struck me as odd is that these tracks revealed toe impressions. It could be bear hell it might be bigfoot just applying his weight towards the front of his feet due to the extreme coolness of the snow. I should have measured the tracks but I was wet cold and had to push on to the end of the line prior to sunset to be able to bring you the photos of the landscape and surrounding area. Both were fairly large tracks especially the pudgy toe imprints to the photo in the right. Both tracks reveal something with four toes like I said who knows bear? bigfoot? maybe some other forest beast!

This piece of rock fell down from the tunnels ceiling today it might serve as some alter for someone practicing the occult as it is heavily burned as if someone lit candles maybe even a piece wood on top of it.	These stone divots inside the tunnel today may also serve as alters or in this case the public restroom. This area is deep inside one of the tunnels its pitch black back here and some of our EVP was captured at this location.

I am not much of one to focus on anomalies we do though time to time so we can let the public form their own opinions on what it is we captured. In this case this anomaly is a bit odd its not a dust or water particle but something else perhaps causing this. We may never know but still interesting nonetheless.

Two oddities stand out in this photo the first is a face in the ectoplasm which appears to have a grinning face and a mouth full of teeth. The second is what appears to look like an orb but if you really study it its actually just a floating head/face. I mean look at the deep eye sockets, mouth and ridge line for the nose. We cannot deny what the camera sees as I was told if you humans can see 6 million pixels and cameras can see 12 million then it must mean cameras will see the things we cannot.

This is a very thick mass of ectoplasm taken in the deep darkest part of one of the longest tunnels on the summit line. Three very distinct faces the first one on the top could be a longer hair man or if you study it closer one giant skull looking face. The one in the middle just the head and neck are visible perhaps a young Chinese man who appears to perhaps be smiling at me. The third or lower set of faces on the bottom looks like the face of a female she looks like she is in a bit of shock or worrisome perhaps. Its so hard to know all the dark things that have taken place in these tunnels you have the Chinese miners who died dynamiting the tunnels, victims of possibly fowl play then others who may have been in tragic accidents. Then below the tunnel is Donner Lake where the ghost of the Donner Party haunt those woods. I know we have received reports and visited Donner Lake ourselves! The tunnels are rumored to be haunted I read a story about it which caught my interest to begin with and if you add in some of the strange EVP we captured it is plausible to say that ghosts are present within these dark stone tunnels!

When I excited one of the main railroad tunnels I found two things one was a strange fresh track with toe impressions the second was a waterfalls. I have to admit hearing a branch break nearby during my hike made me curious as to what beast lurk these tunnels and use them as a way to traverse the summit. The waterfalls are seasonal and they drain into Donner Lake far below.	This is another clip of a different section of the great wall made by the Chinese. I climb up the steep snow bank to have my son get a photo of me in the middle of filming. I also make a discovery of a second strange track this one also has toe impressions could be a bear possibly or some other predator or maybe all together its something paranormal. If you pay very close attention I lost my balance nearly going right over a cliff. In the Spring this place is full of dangers many of those dangers the Chinese experienced everyday of their lives when constructing this railroad.
