Devil's Ladder is a natural wonder like no other although the name may imply something sinister it truly is a prime example of true earthly beauty in the heart of the high sierras. Unlike most scenic places this one actually has a very important part in western American history that blends in with its terrain which I will explain further below. In my opinion it serves as a gateway up into the very main ridge into the sierras thus making this a very unique location. Based on those facts I do believe his is a focal point for strange activity.

Everytime I visit locations such as Devil's Ladder it makes me value and appreciate how fortunate we are to based near locations such as these. I spent some of my time hiking and fishing up here. That is the type of location it is however there is also a dismal feeling surround Red Lake. Before I get into any historical significance it is important to try to understand the region a bit better. From the top of Devils Ladder one can get spectacular views of Sierras, Red Lake and the gateway to the Carson Valley.

The area which includes Red Lake and Devils Ladder encompasses about 860 acres with most of the trees being willows, aspen groves and wildflowers. Just like many parts of the sierras coyotes, deer, jackrabbits, ground squirrels, beavers, golden eagles, quails, warblers, hawks, marmots and bear are often sighted here. The reasoning behind mentioning the type of animals is so that we can give our viewers an idea of the type of natural area this is. There is more then enough food for Bigfoot in this region to sustain a diet as many different animal species coexist around Red Lake. In one of our videos while I am filming even from right to left off in the distance a fox possibly giant cat slowly turns looking at me then disappears on into its den. However when you take into consideration the type of tracks such animals leave and compare that with Sasquatch it is obvious that there is a big difference in the two. As Bigfoot is a hominoid thus its foot impression that it is going to leave will be similar to that of a human being. It would be as easy as a creature like this coming down from the main ridge of the sierras right down to the lake for food or water. Just as in the middle of the night this cryptid could go right back up into the high sierras and man would never know other then the tracks such a creature would leave behind. Since Devils Ladder connects to the main ridge this is an area that we are positive is home to North America's Great Ape!

When you hike down Devils Ladder in the spring and summer a season creek trickles down this old wagon trail. There are some areas where rushing water crosses the road to a degree that if you fell it might wash you right over the steep slope. I learned very quickly the seclusion and dangers that surround this area.  When nightfall sets in the area clears out although some camp here most of the time the entire area has not one hiker or camper in miles. Which may attribute to the reason on our first exploration we were being followed by something of the unknown.  There is not one area that I hike around here that I do not feel watched and allot of the canyons surrounding this region serve as outlets that take you into some of the most remote areas of this mountain range.

As far as the history of Red Lake and the Devils Ladder region this may be my favorite part of it all in relevance to the area . At one time John C. Fremont and Charles Preuss stood atop of Red Lake Peak which overshadows Red Lake. At the height of about 10,100' almost in 1844 these two explorers were some of the first white men to see Lake Tahoe from afar to the North after they two made a desperate crossing of this range to obtain provisions at Sutters Fort. Today this pass is called the Carson Pass however Devils Ladder is only one small part of it and a very difficult part if that to cross.

Back in the day the early pioneers named the Devils Ladder for its steepness as they made there way across the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It was nearly almost third of a quarter mile climb. More then often they called this three quarter mountain as it took three quarters of a mile to make the climb to the first summit of Red Lake Peak. When we hiked along Devils Ladder it was easy to see how difficult it would have been for a wagon trail to ascend otherwise I felt like it was a very descent hike with great views. I read somewhere that the ascension up the ladder is a 700' elevation gain so you can only imagine how treacherous it was for pioneers to try and get there wagons up here.

Back in the 1800's there was a small staging area that was built at the base of the mountain near Red Lake. The wagons would be emptied of goods to lighten the loads then the pioneers would carry these goods to top of the Devils Ladder on there backs. Then the wagons would be brought up using ox while the strongest men would help with assisting each wagon. Once the top was reached those men including the ox were brought back down to the bottom of the mountain to do it all over again. There was no cars or easy way to do it this was the hard labor and will of the American people to expand into regions less traveled. At times chains and ropes had to be wrapped around trees to help pull the wagons up the ladder by no means was it an easy task.

At one time John C. Fremont and Kit Carson had allot of difficulty lowering their wagons down the steep grade of Devils Ladder. Ill have to find it but there is a place where you can see where Kit Carson carved his name onto a tree its very historic. This is how the pass on Rte. 88 received its name Kit Carson Pass. Which the pass was used by thousands of early pioneers and nonetheless it was full of various steep slopes with sharp drop offs. Some of those wagons went right off the edge and people did die as they traveled westward hoping for a better life. Devil's Ladder however was the sharpest of all drop offs in the pass so the name kind of stuck. There were many as 250 wagons waiting to make there ascension at times here and while the pioneers waiting they camped....hunted and fished around the Red Lake area.

Devils Ladder was used by the natives as a trading route for as long as 10,000 years and in the late 1840's about 40-50,000 pioneers crossed this range. Then in the 1850's another 50,000 pioneers made the same journey. This may have been one of the most active and used pioneer trails in the entire wild west this is why it is such a significant place for our society to work with. As many as 250 wagons a day would await there turn to ascend up along Devils Ladder and some pioneers had to sit tight waiting there turns.  These same pioneers helped shaped the American West as they migrated to parts of California settling in businesses and forming cities throughout California that today are booming. It was the sacrifices these early pioneers made that led to some of you even being here today as snow around Devils Ladder was said to reach heights almost in excess to 30'.

Just below the first summit and Devils Ladder is the main ridge of the Sierra Nevada which if you check out our scenic photos and videos to view it. Its actually the giant rocky cap that is off in the background behind Red Lake. That will be eventually a hike that our team does we have no choice if my theory is correct were going to find something up there and get closer to Bigfoot then almost any cryptozoloogist in the world. Its an area very few ever get to see and the views are breathtaking.

As far as the pioneer trail being haunted that is a huge possibility during the winter months this pass was beyond treacherous. It is a fact that people up here died not everyone survived these pilgrimages. The early pioneers described the snow up here as being eternal and honestly it seems that way based on my visits to the region. When I came up here in July my first time allot of the area was covered in snow and it was very cold up here. This was in the summer time so imagine how it would be in the middle of winter? Man was not meant to survive in these harsh conditions on the other hand Bigfoot has probably learned to adapt for thousands of years here which truly gives him an advantage to continue to remain elusive in this region.

This is an area that is a very important part of natural history for our viewers to enjoy and anyone else that can value the beauty of this area. Not much has changed over the past 150 years it still looks as if it did then. These photos you are looking at is exactly how the pioneers seen it and now we bring it to you!
