The Abraham Lincoln Home is located in Downtown Springfield Illinois and it was really the only home the Lincolns owned and renovated. In fact Lincoln along with his family lived there for nearly 17 years before he became president. The home offers tours and walkthroughs amazingly its as if you are stepping back in time. Everything is so well preserved from that era and most of it is original not all but most.

In 1837 Lincoln moved to Springfield from New Salem to start his law career which is where he met his wife Mary Todd at her sister's home in Springfield. In fact, he married her there in 1842 to start a family of his own. Lincoln's Tomb is also in Springfield in Oakridge Cemetery nearby which we also visited because it does tie into this neighborhood and home. Many of Lincoln's friends and colleagues are buried there.

Anyhow, after Lincoln had gotten married they both purchased this home in 1844 for around $1,500 back then it was just a small Greek Revival cottage. When the Lincolns were living in the home they raised a family three of their four sons were born here however Edward died and was told of tuberculosis in the home. Lincoln's family had grown so the house had to be expanded.

In 1846 Lincoln added a downstairs bedroom and around 1855 to 1856 he made it a two-story home. I was told they did not even have a stairwell to go upstairs they had to use a ladder. In fact Lincoln did about 17 renovations to the home it was always evolving into the home you see today in the photos and videos I am sharing with our viewers which now contains a total of twelve rooms.

Lincoln was actually nominated for the presidency at his home in fact everything was done from this home his work, his family life, studying law, and even his son's funeral was held here. So the home has quite a bit of history and the home became quite popular during Lincoln's campaign which ran in and around 1860.

Once Lincoln won the presidency in 1861 he left Springfield to become the 16th President of the United States moving into the Whitehouse. He never returned to live in this home sad to say. I heard from the historian that he rented it out so some of the things he owned back then were removed while the tenants brought some of their own belongings to live in the home which you might still see wandering around this home from that era.

When Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 his son Robert Todd Lincoln donated the home to the state of Illinois in 1887. He wanted it to be taken care of sort of as a memorial to his father and also stated that it would be free of charge so if you visit here you may pay for the parking but you are free to wander around the home and grounds. There is a museum next door and a few other structures you can enter. If you roam around Lincoln's neighborhood many homes have plaques and are of historical significance. Many of his neighbors were friends of Abraham it was a tight-knit community.

This is a brief video of the home inside and outside. Ill take you room to room, front and backyard. Show you some of the original artifacts, museum pieces, also will go into two other hones that being the Dean and Arnold Home. Back in 1887 Robert Todd Lincoln donated the home to the state so that it could be preserved at the agreement they would not charge others to visit the home.

Other homes in this 12 acre neighborhood were restored, kept original and plaques were put out in front of many of them. These local neighbors owned business and were personal friends with the Lincoln's back in the day. Many of the homes are just as historic and ill take you through a stroll through the tree lined gravel streets for our viewers to enjoy. I wont give up all the areas secrets but there is enough for all of you to enjoy in case you decide you want to visit this quaint little neighborhood in Springfield to see where our 16th President lived.
