Subject: Our Amazing Ghost Town Expedition In Rockland Nevada - 4/9/16 Date: 4/15/2016 7:01:38 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time From:LordOfThyNight@aol.com To:ParanormalBuffalo@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSociety@googlegroups.com, paranormalghostsociety@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSocietyConnections@yahoogroups.com, TheParanormalGhostSociety@yahoogroups.com, SupernaturalFlorida@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalCalifornia@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalNevada@yahoogroups.com, Paranormalflorida@yahoogroups.com, sierraparanormal@yahoogroups.com, PGSPhantoms@yahoogroups.com I was extremely excited about journeying in Rockland Nevada
this is such a beautiful mountain range and really in my opinion one of the
states greater gems. Whenever you enter the Bridgeport Wilderness your going to
encounter an area with great diversity this includes many ghost towns like
Aurora, Bodie, Chemung, Masonic and Pine Grove just to name a few. Its a very
vast region full of red cliffs, caves, forest, high desert, rock formations and
rugged mountains.
The last time I was near Rockland is when I made an attempt to
take the old Bodie Pioneer Wagon Road in December of 2015. I pushed through the
Pine Grove Mountains heading east over patches of snow, water and utter
ruggedness getting as close as about 4 miles deep in Nye Canyon. Eventually the
road became so narrow I was scraping the sides of my vehicle and the road ended
in a heap of earth.
This time around instead of taking Nye Canyon heading east id
try to go around the other side of the range traversing west up into Rockland
Canyon. The Rockland Canyon route is a bit more feasible however honestly you
still need 4wd do not believe these websites that tell you otherwise they are
out of their freaking minds. This is a true journey if you want to jeep up into
the canyon and make your way to the top of the Pine Grove Mountains to where the
ghost town site resides.
Just like any journey you take you have to cross massive
expanses of high desert in some cases lush valleys which can be just as rugged.
Then you can work your way up into these canyons into the Toiyabe National
Forest which covers higher elevations in nearly every major mountain range
through the entire state of Nevada. This is a ghost town your going to work for
which is why I enjoyed coming here so much.
Rockland is a little spread out when I could not get to the
townsite my first time we had a nice picnic before sundown up by a mine.near a
meadow with pretty rock formations. Mining has been transpired in this region
since the mid 1800's erratically to say the least. When Pine Grove grew as a
large town Rockland sort of became a suburb or rather had its own mining
district. The mines back here made well over a million dollars.
The problem was prospector from Pine Grove who founded the
town and owned the mine was not paying the miners. This kind of led to an
uprising but also led to the town becoming abandoned. It was revitalized once
again in the early 1900's till perhaps 1934 when it once again was abandoned.
The town had a post office, mills, saloons, stores, stage station and even an
express office. Over 150 residents lived here today though not so much as a
matter in fact little remains and if you want to find anything you have to hike
in the forest.
I was excited to visit here you never know what you may find
if you explore. You might see a UFO or get something ghostly as well. If you do
not find the paranormal you will find history. Who knows you might find even
gold. One thing was for sure is that I was excited about trying out some of my
new firearms I had purchased recently a beautiful S&W 40 semi-automatic
pistol and AR Rifle with green and red dot sights. Its fun when you can pack up
the guns for shooting some cans, beer, cooler of food, grill, paranormal gear,
football and bud making an adventure of it.
Years ago when I first moved to Northern Nevada we went to
Pine Grove which is only BTW a few miles from Rockland but in another canyon. I
have not really seen this area much or less during the day since when I went to
Pine Grove it was midnight. Then two weeks later after I went to it some ass
hats burned down the school. That really made me angry because every place I was
doing research at someone was going around committing arson at these locations.
It could have been coincidence or somebody who thought they would try to pin it
on me. Personally if you know me then you know my main goal of these project is
to preserve these sites and the heritage they contain!
When we left in the morning the skies were really dark no sun,
dark clouds, scattered showers and snow hitting the tops of the mountains. I
never let weather deter me in Nevada because winter here is very different from
other parts of the country. You might have rain in one canyon and sun peering
through in another one. The temperatures can vary greatly and so it just depends
on where you go here. Its not the wettest of states so seeing rainfall like we
were about to experience is rare since Nevada is known as one of the more
sunnier states in the country so I was not to concerned.
We drove through the expanse which is very beautiful
especially if you continue south through it you will see cliffs, forested
mountains, sand dunes etc. Eventually you do get to the turn off to Pine Grove
where a few miles westward you will see the Pine Grove Mountains. A very large
beautiful Hawk landed next to my jeep and he let me take his photo and record
footage. What a beautiful bird and trust me Nevada has planet of bird life that
will leave you breathless. If you keep heading down the road which takes you
into the mountains you can go straight/west which takes you to the ghost town of
Pine Grove or you can veer left/sw down this rugged road which eventually take
you high up into the mountains where Rockland is situated.
When I veered off towards the mouth of Rockland Canyon it was
looking real grim the road was washed out in certain areas with signs that flash
flooding created ditches. I had to physically drive through this deep ditch
bottoming out but I still made it but the jeep went straight down then I had to
get it out of there. Not to mention all the rocks in the road especially once
you enter the canyon caused by rock slides and forces of nature which carry
earth everywhere. So the road in simple terms is not the best and you could get
stuck back here.
When I had gotten into the canyon there was allot of beautiful
red and gray cliffs everywhere. Definitely the forest here is very lush and
green. Especially when it rains in Nevada many plants brighten up allot within a
very short time so everything was really nice and green. There were some big
rocks in the road that rolled down the sides of the canyon walls perhaps caused
by the series of rain storms we have had. Its not very maintained so there was
some areas the road was so narrow that it was touching the sides of my jeep but
I made eventually almost at the top of the canyon to the town site.
I seen these red cliffs with this cave entrance but now way to
get up inside. I love caves as most of you are aware or anything underground. I
always think about underground civilizations and entrances into the earth that
might lead to vast caverns, underground rivers as well as ancient secrets.
People might think I am insane but do your research its been proven time and
time again that in ancient times humans did adapt to living underground perhaps
some remained underground. Many of these caves found in the middle of nowhere in
Nevada may just lead to hundreds of miles of tunnels you just never know
considering most have never been explored thoroughly due to how hard they are to
get too.
When you first enter the town site or at least how you will be
aware you are there is a large mill sits high up on the side of this hill. You
can see piles of wood, stone walls and even the top to some water reservoir
tank. There is also a giant concrete foundation and some frame to what may have
been covered with aluminum siding with an ore bin. There were three to four
mills in this area but all came around different time periods. High up on the
hill are a couple of ore bin chutes.
If you take the road slightly higher it gets really steep and
quite rugged therefore its better to park at the mine and this rusty structure
which is barely standing. More or less its just a metal shell to what may have
been some kind of machine shop or residence. I am thinking though since it sat
next to the mine it probably was the administration office for the miners to
check in or out perhaps grab there gear before hading on into the mine.
I really wanted to explore the mine but after going a few feet
into it I seen it had at least 6" of water covered in melting ice which had
cracks throughout it. The last time I journeyed through cold water in a mine
actually ice water all my toes cramped and it was excruciating so I thought to
myself if the entire mine was like this I could literally be walking around for
an hour in this stuff. I am sure in a few months the mine may dry up a little or
not but it certainly would not be as cold as it is now.
Across from the mine is what appears to be the floor or wall
of some wooden cabin and behind some trees another wood cabin which is
collected. If you look up to your right you can see dump piles from various
mines above at the top of the canyon. Where I stood in the mine was the lower
portion but they probably had a shaft that ran a few hundred feet above to where
those dump piles are. Most mines had a couple entrance and exit levels.
From this area it was a very steep and rugged climb through
the canyon. I was done offroading for awhile so my plan was to hike in the
national forest see what else we could find. I mean the road is so rugged and
steep its probably not a good idea to take it. If you can go a half mile to a
mile it does level out and the road gets really great at the top of the Pine
Grove Mountains. We grabbed our backpacks, food, drinks and guns setting off
into the frontier.
We had hiked for about a half mile where we came across a
massive dump pile also in the canyon to our left is a ravine where a seasonal
creek runs through. I only seen some water trickling through here but that is a
given considering that all the snow is long gone therefore you have no run off
from it. One of the reasons I love this mountain range is that it kind of blends
with the high sierras or runs parallel with it so its quite possible that
bigfoot may roam up here at least I like to keep an openmind to this possibility
since its so lush up here and remote.
We wanted to work our way up towards the top of the canyon
leaving behind our backs a great view of the expanse below. No less it was all
very scenic here where we would find an area in the canyon that has these
crossroads. I actually found some remnants of a stone fireplace not to far from
the seasonal creek where we took a break at after hiking here. I had my son
scout out some new areas he has more energy then me therefore like every boy he
went exploring before I would set off on my own perilous adventure.
It begin to really rain hard we walked about 100' away sitting
under a tree. The tree was surrounded by remnants of a stone foundation perhaps
an old saloon or store. I did not realize at the time it was one of the
structures within the town. I would find out later when I stood at the top of
the canyon looking down where Tammy was sitting and realized this was a decent
sized structure at one time. We took out food from our packs, drinks and
supplies having a picnic. I ate an apple and I kind of kicked my feet up for
awhile before gearing up for more adventure. You can tell this was downtown
Rockland there is allot of rusty remnants such as bean cans, TNT canisters and
debris from various structures.
I set off by myself on a fairly long journey maybe an hour or
two? Its hard to tell I lose track of time but I wanted to climb to the top of
the Pine Grove Mountains and believe me I did. There is allot of roads that zip
off within the canyon. Its a bit hard to see where you are because many of the
roads are woodsy but they all seem to branch off of the main road in the canyon
therefore I took most of them on foot scouring the forest along them for any
ruins. I actually wanted to find this large structure which appears on google
earth but never found it thought that was a bit strange considering I mapped the
area out quite well.
I did not a single sign the town existed once I was a mile up
into the canyon and standing on top of the range. Once you reached the top of
the mountains its all beautiful rolling hills and vast open areas so it helped
make my hike easier considering how steep of a climb it is to get here. Things
were looking really bad once I was on top of the mountain range I could not see
anything to the west but merely a wall of white fog and dark clouds moving so
fast towards me I knew this could spell doom for this expedition or even our own
lives. But I was far away from my family and even further from the jeep so I
decided id wing it.
Its strange being at the top of the mountains here because the
peaks merely become small hills and by the time I stood on various ones the
views were gone. It merely was a gloomy landscape with fog closing in on me from
every single direction. No less I pushed on trying to find anything left behind
of the town. Rocks can be mirages off in the distance I found some which I
thought was a foundation because the way they were stacked look like an entry
way boy was I wrong which wasted about 15 minutes trying to get to it. I did
find a fence post though or grave marker perhaps cannot say for certain though.
I also seen a mine high up on a hill and in this huge open
area there had to be roads going off in about five different directions. I was
only able to walk down so many of them but most of my journey was not on any set
path or road but rather just climbing hills trying to find something cool to
explore and bring to our viewers. It was pretty up here as matter in fact on my
hike I found at least 7 to 8 different types of wild flowers some I have never
seen in Nevada up until I climbed around this range. As a matter in fact this
one entire hillside had thousands of these purple wildflowers thus the hill kind
of had a purple hue to it.
Instead of taking the main road down through the canyon I took
one level with the top of it along the edge of these cliffs in hopes to find
remnants of the town or mines. I figured with so many dump piles at the top of
the canyon maybe id find some miners cabins. After journeying for awhile I
looked below the canyon seeing my son running down the road as we yelled out to
one another for a thousand feet away from eachother. He looked like an ant but
he seen me yelling out to him and I seen Tammy still resting under the tree we
picnicked at.
I had a very steep trek to take down the side of the canyon
walls. I was going to cut down through the forest in hopes of finding something
hidden at the town site. I did not find anything other then a very tedious short
cut but I made it in a few minutes down to Jarrod. I move very fast by myself
lets just put it that way and always have. I had to estimate where to find my
family because once you descend back down into the canyon its all woods down
this steep hill which you cant even see anything in let alone the wagon road
which runs through the town site. So down I came off the cliffs fast and the
steep forested canyon back to my family. The view from the tops of the trees is
impressive before you slide as a matter in fact I felt but caught myself from
sliding to far to where it became dangerous.
My son was pretty impressed with my hiking that day he said to
me that he could not believe how fast I made it to the top of the mountains but
also how I surpassed him going up into the canyon. I was pretty determined and
focused in Rockland that is when I do my best work just remember that. This is a
challenging location so if you hike it your in for a real adventurous treat and
you need to be a stronger hiker trust me. It was still raining but mildly so we
packed up our things setting off on an adventure up to the mill.
I found this old mining road it kind of goes off into the
forest from the crossroads we were at then follows the canyon but rather above
it through the dump piles. Dump piles are just piles of ore and rock that is
taken out of the mines then milled and dumped. Sometimes its just dumped below
the entrance into the mines as shafts and tunnels are being erected within the
mountain. So instead of descending we would take the high road which follows the
edge of the mountain which many claims were made over the years during
Rockland's existence.
The road appeared to disappear after a few hundred feet but we
did find remnants of a stone miner cabin back here. I thought this was a really
awesome find because it just means that the forest hides its secrets well but
also that their are some remnants of the town higher up on the canyons cliffs.
The terrain at this point gets very rugged as you follow the mountain through
the woods its a very steep drop off as you have to climb over all the ore for a
few hundred feet. We had to push on for about a mile along a steep bank above
the canyon through loose rock. Till we could get around the front of the
mountain then descend through the woods and directly at the mill site where we
originally seen the ore chutes at when we first arrived within the town.
Tammy was having a really hard time with the hike having major
meltdowns sometimes others let there fear get a hold of them. They are to
worried about falling, dying, what could happen etc etc it happens all the time.
We as humans tend to over think about some things which in reality are not as
bad as they seem. But rather then take the steep road back to the jeep then have
to drive to the bottom of the mill then re-hike up to the top of it I just cut
us across the side of the mountain then through the forest down to the mill. The
loose rock for half of the trek really was hard to get footing on and plus with
the rain we had to work to get past it all.
Once we began to descent into the forest it was steep but
hardly any rocks so once I had footing I was booking down the side of the
mountain without one incident not even a slip. At times through the trees we
could see these beautiful red cliffs off in the distance and the vast expanse
where fog had set on in. The weather was not clearing up anytime soon which is
hard to believe because it was in the 50's and some sun was peering through when
we first arrived. However on the way to the mill it dropped ten to twelve
degrees and a layer of dark clouds just consumed us within a matter of a few
hours.
Jarrod and I found what appeared to be a grave in the woods
just a stake with a pile of rocks. This was often done when certain towns did
not have a cemetery and they needed to bury a resident. Sometimes miners would
die in the mines at these mining camps therefore they would be buried or often
given a grave not to far from where the mine was. I made some good calls on the
hike I shaved allot of time off the hike by taking this trek because again a
storm was brewing so we had to get to the mill. Low and behold after climbing
under branches, pushing through trees and having to work our way down the steep
mountain we came out onto the main mill road.
We may have walked less then a 100' when we seen two sets of
ore bin chutes and rather then take the switch back road we just cut between
them right down to the mills ruins. Tammy hates to be wrong so at that point she
shut up or stopped fussing at me about the trek I had taken her through to get
here. I am good at what I do I can take you off any path almost and land you
very close to your destination and I did this without any GPS or trail. I just
estimated geological landmarks from the bottom when I first came in then later
on used those from above to get to the mill which btw is kind of hidden on the
side of a hill with allot of foliage.
One of the ore bins had this white powder looked like borax or
talc its hard to say maybe they mined something other then gold and silver here.
The ore chutes were falling apart and the mill although large was in bad shape.
It had two concrete walls and one giant stone wall made with rocks native to the
canyon. There was wood beams and pieces of aluminum siding everywhere also used
in roofing which at one time covered the mill. There was some foundations as
well and the shells of some wood structures all within the hillside. This
probably was the original ten stamp mill which was said to have been burned down
by an angry miner who did not get paid and ended up going to jail for arson in
the 1800's in Carson City.
We decided we would set up some tin cans and targets to shoot
our new guns at. I also wanted to teach my son how to use our new firearms its
important he understands how to use them responsibly but also safely. I am
trying to teach my family how to have fun with firearms but also how to
practice using them in case of an emergency if that makes sense. Here in Nevada
its very common for others to go up into the Nevadan frontier to discharge some
guns. We love our guns in this state most folks I know collect them or target
practice women, kids and men alike. Its something I am trying to get more into
especially if we are going to survive a post apocalyptic world.
I hit a can with my AR Rifle which has no recoil its a
beautiful gun plus I have an attachment that allows me to use eight different
type of green or red cross hairs or laser sights. My handgun has a bit more
power to it the bullets are a couple times larger so when you fire it those
bullets can easily put holes into metal as if it were butter. I forgot to bring
my air plugs so I used toilet paper shoving it in my ears jokingly and it worked
really good because my handgun is much louder then my rifle. I taught my son how
to fire it and after a few times he was firing it on his own so was Tammy
without any issue. I have special bullets to cut down on the recoil for the
pistol which also helps for good accuracy shots.
There was a baby bunny hanging around the mill also but this
was about the only wildlife we seen on the journey besides wildflowers, hawks,
crows and a few other birds. We had a nice spot by the mill to fire my guns with
views of the vast expanse below and a beautiful mountain with red cliffs that
overshadows the entire mouth of the canyon below. Just a great place in the wild
west to fire guns and enjoy the view. But we could not stay long it was raining
harder with each passing minute and a cold front had come in so it was cooling
down real fast something was not right. I had to take a few more photos I sent
my family to the jeep told them id meet with them below in the canyon as they
begin to take the windy milling road to the main road that heads up into the
canyon where our jeep was parked.
I took a few photos but man my camera was getting soaked I had
water running off my cowboy hat like a faucet seriously. But I love my cowboy
hat despite what others think it does keep the water our of your eyes and your
hair much drier then a person with a beanie, hoodie or ball cap so therefore it
had served its use here. I could not believe the torrential rainfall it was like
a rainforest actually a bit dismal and almost spooky to be this high up in the
canyon knowing if we do not get out that a wall of water could come down the
canyon killing us all. I have studied at allot of ghost towns and found that
many times dozens were killed due to flash floods carried off down a mountain
only to be drowned or bashed up against some rocks. Mother nature is a force so
we must always respect her!
The road below is like a snake till you meet up with the road
that ascends up through the canyon to where the jeep is. My family was gone they
were on the canyon road so I quickly ran down the side of the hill through the
woods below the mill. I sure timed it right because I would come right out of
the woods right in front of them shaving sometime off my hike without having to
take that road all the way to the bottom. But it was not an easy trek there was
an area where two hills conjoined with eachother therefore water was running
between the two hills like a river and it was creating a mud slide which I had
to cross because I was surrounded by it. Oh man my shoes were filling with mud
and I nearly almost fell onto the mud. If I would have fallen onto the mud I may
have ended up sliding down the hill for over 50' maybe even more who knows hit a
tree get killed anything can happen.
I did find on my descent right before I met up with Tammy a
stone pillar and even a rusty bucket. I am not sure how the pillar had gotten
down here but maybe a flash had carried it down here in the woods which reminded
me of why I had to hurry to get off the side of the canyons steep walls and get
back to the jeep. Tammy and I hiked together for awhile the rain was bad the
canyons road had sheets of water on it. My entire backpack was soaked, camera
was dripping wet and all my paranormal gear as well. Their was nothing I could
do even if I wanted to pull out plastic bags for everything it was to late the
rain was so hard everything was already wet. Still I was able to do some filming
and photography but from the mill and on the lens kept getting wet no matter how
much I wiped it so I am sure the media is not that great.
I noticed on my pistol safety video there was hardly no sound
due to there being water in the microphone lol. But I did continue to collect
footage of our journey back to the jeep in the storm in case something happened
to me and someone found the camera they would know what happened its important.
Jarrod hiked for a mile almost made it to the jeep first then me and eventually
Tammy. It is a hard road to hike because its not only steep but it was wet
almost as if a river was running down the road. To make matters worst it was
snow and rain mixed together. It was so cold out my jacket was in the jeep
because earlier during the day it was warmer out did not need it.
When I arrived at the jeep I had to take off almost all my
clothes in the hard rain and snow. The snow that was coming down was massive
were talking flakes the size of quarters. I had to put warmer clothes on
although most of my dry clothes I put on became dampened just trying to change
them at the jeep but at least I was able to warm up a little. My socks were
dripping wet also but would not change them till later in the journey because
time spelled doom and I did not have that luxury. We were being blasted by a
very wicked storm and everything I have learned over the years depended on me
and me alone to get us not only out of the canyon but across the expanse in one
piece without getting stuck.
Trust me I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders I
knew I could do it I just was not looking forward to doing this trek because I
knew it would be one hell of a ride. I also knew if something went wrong its all
on me therefore no room for error but still the ride in was rough and it was not
storming imagine what it would be like to take the same journey only this time I
would be doing it in fog, snow, rain, flash flooding and hardly any visibility.
We could not stay here at the town site we would freeze to death this is Bodie
country they could get 6' of snow in a storm and you could be buried here.
People died in this frontier and so did the towns one of the main reasons was
mother nature was very unforgiving.
I had gotten into the jeep and told my family I got this and
to not worry. I just wanted to calm them down I know in their heads they knew
its do or die also. We stay we die if I drive and something goes wrong we die!
Their are not many choices and this kind of thing can happen to anyone. It only
takes one incident for things to spiral downhill I know. We have seen flash
floods, rock slides, snow storms, thunder showers, lightening and even fires on
our investigations. We cant plan for that all we can do is embrace it and defeat
what is coming at us. Everything we do is designed to make us stronger so we can
be more efficient on our expeditions but also safe.
I started to pull of problem is that my heater is not working
right or defrost so I have to manually take a rag wipe the window in extreme
situations such as a storm like this. But then again I can usually look out my
side windows and estimate where I need to be on this narrow road. You do it long
enough you know how to keep it straight problem is that the road turned into a
river. Its very steep all the way to the bottom of the canyon. To the right you
follow a ravine to the left is thick trees, brush and rocky walls. The water
should be running down the ravine but instead it was just pouring down the
descending windy road. It does not help that the miners also built stone walls
in the ravine to hold back the water that way it builds up and comes pouring
down everywhere at once. I seen two rocky walls in that ravine one while hiking
between the mill and mine. The other one was up near the stone fireplace I found
higher up near the top of the canyon.
As I begin to film even though their was not much visibility I
wanted to document this. I am generally a one handed driver since I have spent
the last five years doing allot of producing while offroading. So not even my
family questions my ability to drive in any condition or circumstance. The
problem was that my cam conked out on me it was so wet the lens was frozen and
it would not power on. I had to get the second HD cam out. To make matters worst
I looked at my left hand and found out I lost my diamond ring while hiking from
the mill to the jeep. You see I hiked so much that I dropped a few pounds
because of all the rock climbing I did. With the hard rain coming down I was
soak n wet including my hands while trying to operate the gear so it must had
just fell right off my finger. If anyone finds it which is doubtful since it
probably sank on the muddy road through the canyon past the mill its black and
has allot of diamonds in it its more sentimental then anything else but so goes
the casualties of adventuring right?
I could not worry about the ring our lives were at stake
therefore I had to figure out how to move a very heavy jeep through a flood on a
muddy road with loose rock through a canyon. My son was holding his breath and
Tammy was holding on tight lending me words of support because there was no
stopping once I made the descent. It was like a water slide we had it snowing on
the windows and raining hardcore. I knew without getting out of here we were
near a peak that soon would be snowed over as the rain was transitioning to
snow. It was so cold out its hard to believe earlier during the day flowers were
abloom and I had no jacket on.
The journey was perilous to say the least areas where no rocks
were on the road it was pure mud and water running through it. Parts of the road
were washed out it was so hard to stop myself from fishtailing, skidding and at
times I came inches along the cliff. I mean your basically riding on a thin
later of water and mud therefore you have to react quickly when the tires pull
towards the cliff. Its hard when you lose control over something you know you
cant do anything about. You have to be mentally in the game because I am not
just responsible for me but others too. They count on me to get them in these
remote places and out of them so its do or die basically.
At the same time your hitting brush and tree branches skidding
down the side of a mountain in a canyon along a ravine. But this is what we do
were all adventurers my family is there to support me sometimes they are not
with me this time they were to hike and enjoy the town site. Little did we
expect the weather to get this severe and so you deal with it its Nevada one of
the last wild frontiers in the country. There was also two parts of the road
washed out when I say washed out imagine massive gashes that run along the edge
of the road or down the center. Not gashes but physically deep ditches almost
two feet deep and the first one was unavoidable. As a matter in fact when I hit
a mud bowl the Jeep slid to the left along the forest into a ditch my jeep was
almost sideways with two tires in the ditch two tires on the road. I was
scraping along the bottom but I never stopped giving the jeep gas and its a
powerful engine so I plowed through it then almost spinning to the right along
the edge of the cliff.
Their was another area I had to go uphill at lower in the
canyon as your nearing the mouth and leaving it. I have allot of horsepower in
my jeep and its good I put on some tires a couple days prior which had better
tread but still it was not easy to get to the ghost town or out of it especially
after the fact the weather turned ugly. When I had gotten almost out of the
mouth of the canyon I stopped to look up into the canyon it was bad up there but
the lower area was not much better looking either considering we hit hardcore
rain and fog. All the water and mud that rushes down the canyon ends up on the
valley floor so conditions were just as rugged parts of the road were huge risk
factors for getting stuck. It was a little warmer in the valley no snow yet but
I was damp and cold even in newer clothing. I had to drive with my window open
had mud all over me it was some true grit adventuring.
The valley was very green some of the plants are so bright
they were giving off bright greens and lime was very vibrant. It almost looked
like were not in a desert as the foliage glowed. As a matter in fact before I
left the canyon I found these beautiful red flowers they were so bright. You see
folks here in Nevada parts of it at least rain is not as common or they are more
arid regions. Therefore certain cactuses and plants glow brightly when they
absorb water to sustain themselves. Its very pretty to say the least if you like
nature! I had gotten out to photograph such flowers even in the rain still a
trooper the entire way wet camera and all. I still was not out of the expanse I
had to cross two washes or ditches caused by flooding to get out of here still.
The first one I came across I drove through the desert dodging plants going
around it which actually was a good choice or we could have bottomed out.
We did make it to the dirt roads but they were just that no
rocks for traction. I still had one more stop and I made the call to do it
because nothing could be worst then that canyon. I made it to Pine Grove Road
its all dirt more like a complete muddy nightmare but its very wide and doable
as long as you keep the vehicle rolling. I was fishtailing for miles throwing up
mud everywhere but if you turn off you can descend onto this huge expanse and
valley. There were a few cattle grazing and a huge ranch off in the
distance.
It was scenic the deeper you traverse this valley and
expanse. See before you turn off to Pine Grove the valley is narrow and small
you cant look to far down into it. But if you head south then turn off you can
go into the heart of it which has beautiful views of the Wassuk Mountain Range.
Some of the largest snowy peaks are found in this region including Mt. Grant
which stands at about 11,300' so we had some nice views however it was foggy and
still raining hard so we really could not enjoy them!.
I made my way to the old Cambridge Post Office at least this
is what is listed on various maps in the heart of this valley. It was the only
structure I found but it was very small just a small stone cabin with no roof
and a couple of windows. I also seen a couple wood benches inside could not stay
long just enough to take a photo or two. I have no idea of the history other
then it was used when the Post Office closed in Rockland and Pine Grove. It is
crumbling and their was a sign selling a claim behind it. So maybe this was used
as a miners cabin before or after it became a post office. I mean its very
strange that your in this vast expanse for miles surrounded by mountains and
here is this little stone cabin just in ruins. Their was no other foundations
and this use to be a small settlement here big enough to boast a post office. I
had to see it though it was old and it really is part of the regions history. It
may not exist much longer so some video and photos helps others to enjoy it
since nobody has any media online in regards to this historic site!
I did manage to get us out of this valley but when I was
heading north I looked to my left and you could see that the top of the Pine
Grove Mountains were covered in fresh snow. As a matter in fact it was still
storming on top and far from the weather calming down. I had gotten out of the
jeep looked up near the peak I stood on from many miles away and was shocked to
see it covered in fresh white powder. You could see it was still snowing there
while in the valley raining hardcore. I had gotten to the pavement and finally
was able to change my wet socks once the excitement was nearly over. I was cold
no heat my family covered in blankets and I still had to go home in the storm. I
am getting really bad arthritis and pains in my hands I can barely hold a cup
anymore let alone a screwdriver. So driving home was painful for me to grip the
wheel especially with the pain shooting through my fingers. But I did not care
we were safe, alive, wet and cold but alive!
I stopped at this service station up In Gardnerville its also
a casino brand new very nice place you can get gas and its owned by the Washoe
Tribe which are very prevalent in this area. I know because I have done allot of
my research in this area and they had some Chai Tea at the service station which
I was happy to see to warm up a little. Some of the tribe does not like me very
much however other members of the tribe I am friends with. Its kind of 50/50
they do not agree with my research projects I did when I first came here but
others do because they were directed at educating the schools on Native American
history and sites. Either way I do respect their heritage sites and hope they
will respect what I am trying to do here. The service station is new nobody was
there in the storm so I had gotten everyone some hot drinks for the rest of the
ride home.
It was good to be home but everything was wet I had to put all
sorts of electronics in rice such as phones, cameras, paranormal gear,
recorders, two way radios etc. Everything works the next day I put another
battery in the came and low n behold it turned on and the lens was no longer
frozen. But boxes of snacks such as candy in our backpacks or treats were
shredded and waterlogged. I had to dry off my guns when I had gotten home, turn
on the eat and try to get some of the gear dry. It was good to be in dry warm
clothes and I smoked my rainbow bong which has two chambers so that you can
sustain the CBD to be used medicinally.
We ordered some pretty bomb pizzas from Pizza Hut with
flavored crust and some Jim Beam Spicy BBQ Wings. It was a pretty nice dinner
knowing I did not have to cook and was fairly spent. I watched Gotham with my
kids on the DVR we love that show and I chilled. I did not even unload the
entire jeep I was like I am done for the night as it continued to storm where I
lived to..If most pay attention I post a ton of photos of my jeep when I offroad
and do allot of video footage especially in recent times. That is one of the
best vehicles for getting in and out of a place safely so yeah I vouch for it.
Without that kind of horsepower or awesome four wheel drive I may have rolled
into the ravine or off a cliff or been stranded miles from help freezing to
death in a storm that we could not make a fire in.
People died allot in the west back then they only had horse
wagons these towns were only for the true grit and not everyone made it here. I
was not far from Bodie this place is kind of where the bend is in Nevada west of
Walker Lake but east of the Sierras. So its in a part of the country that is
known for its crazy storms and weather. I do not whine or complain I been doing
what I do for years and seen allot of things. I am just happy that we did not
hit a massive wall of water in that canyon woo knock on wood right? I almost
also went down a wash with water and mud flowing I could have been smacked into
a tree who knows.
No less I had a great day hiking, exploring in the forest
Rockland, picnic with the family, wildlife observation, offroading, toking up
some chocolate bud and shooting off my new guns. It was fun to shoot a few cans
and smoke my pipe very relaxing. Just remember its not guns that kill people its
people that kill people but its important that all of you learn how to use them
because who knows what might happen in the future if a super volcano goes off
your going to get evil people who are going to rape, rob and pillage. Only thing
to prevent an evil person with a gun is a good guy with one so its good to take
the guns out practicing how to shoot accurately if you need to hunt or survive.
I try to teach our viewers a little of everything let them be a part of
something greater then just the paranormal.
The downside to the expedition that almost nearly killed me is
not so much the cliffs but I had gotten really sick the next day and still am. I
been dealing with it for months but it was almost gone and after the expedition
it all went into my lungs could not even breath. I may have exerted myself more
then I should have between hiking in the rain and weakening my immune system by
not letting myself get entirely better from being sick for the past few months.
But I am driven sometimes I forget to take care of me and focus only on one
thing that is the mission to achieve, divide, conquer and be a part of it. At
one time men drank at this towns saloons while women entertained them and the
stamps were crushing the ore which could be heard from every cabin within this
canyon. This is history worth the sacrificing yourself for this is the wild west
every day is one really! But for a few million dollar views and time spent with
the people I love its worth more then all the gold mined here in this canyon
which totaled over a million dollars!
I did not find any paranormal in Rockland but its a strange
little place. I wish the mine was not flooded at the time allot of my haunts
derive from inside many of the mines here in Nevada. But I can always review our
videos, EVP's and photos to compile anything out of the ordinary. If we do not
find anything that is fine were a paranormal adventure group. We chase legends,
history and were all about preservation. Sometimes its very risky what we have
to go through to bring our fans and viewers a story. Not just a story but
physical video footage and photos so that others can experience what we did from
the comfort of their own homes!
Not much remains of Rockland it hides its secrets very well
but its a ghost town I set off to work with and made it a goal since I have done
others in that region. I have had some good times up here in these mountains and
a few years ago I did a 40 miles night time trip over the Pine Grove Mountains
above Lake Topaz. This is a beautiful part of Nevada one so very few get to
experience like I did with exploring places that are not known about. My family
enjoyed it to but we had allot of close calls lucky for us we been doing this a
long time so we know how to apply what we know but also be prepared for the
worst. This is what explorers do at least the true ones not the ones who sit
inside and watch a television. So nobody can knock us for our hard work were
just willing to do the things most are not and we love to share our work.
I know of friends who go up here to camp its a nice place I
understand why they love it and share this place with their family members too.
I totally get it when you hike here its gods country very pristine, quiet,
remote etc but its a sacrifice to get here and get out. You have to work for it
its not handed to you when going to such ghost towns that were abandoned. I did
find a grave marker here and other cool sites like the chimney foundation. Its
also some great hiking in the Pine Grove Mountains no trails you just take the
road less traveled grab the packs and enjoy. I do look forward to putting this
location sometime this year on our site we have two expeditions both
breathtaking at this town which take you through NYE and Rockland Canyon so you
get to see the journey to the town from the western and eastern flanks of this
range. The weather up here is unpredictable so if your going to go you will want
to use our website as a resource to decide if you want to hike or offroad here
let alone if its worth the risk to see this pristine gem!
The next time ill be up here will be to visit Pine Grove
during the day as I want to do another project here of course its much easier to
get to and lower in elevation. I also will also traverse along the Wassuk Range
and perhaps visit the very historic ghost town of Aurora later this year or
next. This is a place of legends, dreams, history, secrets and the paranormal. A
UFO could land and you would never even know it.The whole entire premises of
what we do is to seek out the truth if you do not put time, effort or field work
in you will not see such events. Rockland is in peril if a fire hits this place
all the wood remnants will be lost so it was important to get up here and do a
project.
This is a story to someday tell the grand kids but its also
one to share with all of you. I live to tell about it and get bragging rights
for conquering this beast.in one of the years worst storms here in the Silver
State! I have never felt so alive the moments I am so close to death and it just
means I can take this opportunity or experience to learn a few new things as
more journeys transpire in the future! Life is all about learning and being able
to mentor others our viewers our are students! We have allot more work ahead of
us and many more ghost towns similar to Rockland just wait and see! Such hurdles
will never stop us we live for this and you should too!
Namaste,
Lord Rick

On occasion when you explore ghost towns like Rockland you may just come across an unmarked grave generally with a wood post and a pile of stones. Sometimes you may come across just the pile of stones or even nothing at all. Generally death was a part of life in the wild west. If you died in a remote mine the miners would bury you on a hill with a pile of stones and a piece of wood. Nobody knew who that miner was many times people were forgotten. Life was harsh in the west mining was dangerous attacks by indians were common and if that did not get you the wilderness would do the rest! | |
