Back in the 1860's the pioneers who came to Rockland would have to traverse through Nye Canyon to make their way to the top of the Pine Grove Hills. It was at the time the only stagecoach wagon route through these mountains but also very rugged. I would try to reach Rockland which stands at 8,500' driving through snow, pools of mud, over rocks and through brush as it scrapes the side of the jeep. Today you can take either the Pine Grove Rockland Road or the old Wellington Wagon Route through Nye Canyon. Either way both require 4wd and you will work to reach Rocklands various sites of interest. This was my first expedition I never made it to Rockland the snow had gotten to deep and while on the road I reached a huge pile of boulders covered in snow having to turn back. So instead I visited one of Rockland's mines where we had a nice picnic, shot some air rifles and found some deer bones at. We would definitely come back for a second expedition only this time avoiding Nye Canyon and taking another route to reach this boom town site.

We were back just a short time after winter to make a second attempt at journeying to 8500' where the ghost town of Rockland is located. The skies were gloomy their were some mild showers and a storm had been brewing since the early hours we made our trek across the great expanse which climbs up through Rockland Canyon. Along the way we see a beautiful Hawk the desert floor is rather green this time of year and the scenery is gorgeous of one of Nevada's most beautiful forested mountain ranges. The first 15 minutes the audio is not that great sorry their was what is known as dry ripples in the road which causes extreme vibrations throughout the vehicle as the tires consistently hit them thus they effect audio performance but once we begin to climb the steep canyon road it clears up. This is a rugged road certain times a year water runs down it so their are boulders, sharp rocks, a ravine to the left as you skirt Bald Mountain and eventually you will enter a forest where you will see the Ore Bin Chutes which processed the ore taken out of the Rockland Mines.

We had finally reached the town site at 8,500' in order to see more of the town you have to hike around on foot. Sure you can drive these jeep trails but some of the foundations are further off of them such as some stone ruins which looks like remnants of a chimney. Gold and Silver mining begin in Rockland around the 1860's a man who went by the name of Mr. Keene built a mill here but when he failed to pay them some revolted and one of the miners burnt the mill which led to the demise of the town. Most of the miners that came here came here from Pine Grove which was a much larger city about 6 miles on the other side of Rockland Canyon. The town had a stagecoach stop, stores, assay office, post office, cabins, saloons, mines and of course a decent sized mill during its boom years. But Rockland faced a fair share of problems it was lawless and it would not see a revival till the early 1900's where three more mills had been built and its post office would be reopened. It was named Rockland because of all the rock formations and rocky cliffs which surround the town site. More or less Rockland was really a suburb of Pine Grove in the 1800 and 1900's.

I would hit the rugged Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest on foot all alone in search of ruins or any secrets the town would give up. The scenery on this trek is really gorgeous as ill take you to nearly the very top of not only Rockland Canyon but the Pine Grove Hills. Their is still some snow up here on the peaks one can only imagine what the pioneers had to endure living up here in such a remote rugged terrain. In a sense this place is so quiet and serene its a bit eerie in a sense. You can see that fog is starting to roll in also and the skies are darkening. I was to far into the hike to try to get out of here therefore we were at the mercy of mother nature at this point. When you get to the top of the range you can see rolling hills eventually I skirt the top of the canyon looking below at what use to be downtown Rockland. One can imagine that back in the 1800's when you stood above the canyon you could see saloons with lights on, candles in miner cabins and even hearing a fiddle playing back in the day. Eventually I would descend down into the canyon through the forest where my family waited at the town site. I did end up also taking a spill the loose rocks around this town site make navigating on foot very difficult.

The last leg of our adventure would take us below the town site to the Rockland Mining District. The journey was difficult because instead of taking the long road which loops to the mill and ore bin sites we just skirt the top of the canyon the descend right down behind it. The original mill in town was burned down but in the early 1900's three more mills would be built at this site. All that remains is some ore bin chutes, wood beams, rusty mangled metal remnants, few ore cart rails and cans of beans piled on the hill sides. But at one time this operation brought in a million dollars in gold and silver till operations ceased in 1933. I also wanted to visit the mine and mill site to try out two new firearms I recently bought. The first is my 40 S&W caliber pistol and my AR Mossberg Semi Automatic LR 22 Rifle. So my friends will get to see us shoot some cans. Unfortunately it begin to rain very hard so at times the audio gets muffled because of water droplets on the mic sorry everyone. But no less we had a great time trying to see who had the best shot which I did hit my targets and my red dot site on the AR Rifle is simply stellar. I try to give my friends a safety course this was a special moment for me because it was the first time my son ever find a gun so in a sense this was a great way to bond with him. At one time this area was full of miners, stamps crushing ore and mill whistles going off.

The rain became more or less an onslaught since this area has seen allot of drought the pass years we had a mile to get to the jeep and a very scary journey off of this range ahead of us. The clip starts off with my camera being so wet that the picture is blurry. We are leaving the mining and milling site which was the bread and butter of Rocklands existence. We had concerns of flash flooding, mud slides, boulders rolling down the canyon walls and our only goal was to get to the jeep. There are parts of my hike back to the jeep at one point I thought I was going to be washed right off the road or when I was descending down a wash to the road for that matter. By the time I reached the jeep ascending to the town site we were soaked, cold and it was turning into snow. Yes you can get snow up here in the Spring afterall this is the wilderness and a fairly high elevation so it can get cold up here. I have only one option that is to escape descending through the canyon in the jeep along a steep ravine, cliffs, trees on both sides of the road, deep mud, flash flooding, water running down Rockland Canyon like rapids and we narrowly escaped with our lives. AT one point the jeep fishtails as I skirt the edge of a ravine descending through a flooded road with no traction. We would eventually make it down to expanse below at the mouth of the canyon.

We were wet, cold and we could not believe that we made it off the top of the Pine Grove Mountains. I start off at the expanse below the Pine Grove Hills you can see how green it is as this area has not seen allot of water so the desert plant life absorbs it rather quickly. You can also see that its still raining fairly consistently therefore the lens keeps fogging up due to the moisture combined with the cold. Their is fog everywhere the roads are muddy and my main goal was to get back on the main road. I would have to drive through the desert to go around a washed out road and we would never feel so relieved to be back on pavement. Before we would squelch our adventure for the day I take our viewers up to a place called Cambridge. This also was a small mining camp but when Rockland's post office closed down many of the residents had gotten their mail delivered here. I cant say these stone ruins are anything other then a miners cabin a few folks told me that this was also the old post office. No less the site is historic and did have some ties with Rockland in the sense that Rockland's mail often went to Cambridge. Ill finish up the journey driving along the Pine Grove Mountains which are now covered in fog and yes even fresh snow where ill zoom in showing our viewers the very site we just escaped from perhaps in a knick of time! You do NOT want to be caught up in the Pine Grove Hills let alone Rockland during a storm its very dangerous.
