Carson City deputies continue to probe the cause of death of a body found buried in a shallow grave on Lone Mountain Tuesday morning.

"We found feet sticking out of the ground," Furlong said.

The incident was reported at 10:52 a.m. just north of the Lone Mountain Cemetery, near Roop Street and Winnie Lane.

Investigators said they found what looked to be material from a sleeping bag wrapped around the remains, Furlong said. The body was removed from a 2-foot shallow grave.

“'If she died, why didn’t somebody call? Why bury it?'”

Sheriff Ken Furlong

The finding is considered a "death investigation," authorities said.

"There has to be suspicion of foul play because this body was there," Furlong said. "Somebody buried it there.

"Somebody knew this person was dead, the question is how did she die?" he said. "If she died, why didn't somebody call? Why bury it?

"We have four people up at the autopsy," he said Wednesday afternoon. "And we have tons and tons of unanswered questions."

Furlong said there's a possibility the body may have been a woman, but authorities are awaiting an autopsy to confirm its gender.

"Right now at this moment we haven't gotten into the body," he said.

A hiker had reported the finding to authorities after coming across two shoes and a foot, left exposed from the shallow grave on a hillside.

"The area where the discovery took place is not associated with the (Lone Mountain Cemetery), but is heavily traveled by the homeless population and hikers," authorities said in a statement

"The goal is to get it to the medical examiner just as it was on the ground," Furlong said. "We didn't know a lot because we didn't open the bag up and look at the body.

"We want to get it to them in a pristine condition as possible."
