Back
in the mid 1800's pioneers often described the routes through the
American West mountain passes as gates. In a sense from afar one might
look at a narrow pass from afar and think they are entering a gate such
as with the photo I posted above so that our viewers can get a visual
perspective so that you can understand how the station had gotten its
name. James Simpson began camping here around 1850 and was commissioned
by the government to define a route west thus in doing so the cuts in
the mountains he often referred to as gates which resided at 4,600' and
even today is considered to be in the middle of nowhere. He used the
west, middle and eastern gates to identify the route which he had been
mapping sort of as a landmark in his journal. I mean can you imagine
what the first pioneers thought when they see these massive cuts into
the mountains? From afar they do look like giant gates but in reality
these were natural formations and thousands journeyed through them
during the gold and silver rush. In 1859 the Overland Stage & Freight Company had built a station to provide a rest stop for the passengers and freight lines crossing the Nevada desert. Stages could stop water down there horses and guest could get a hot meal with a place to rest their heads. Such stations were necessary as the traffic from the gold rush was on an increase as miners made there way to other mining towns in the region. Even the Pony Express used Middlegate Station as a changing station during their eighteen month long history from about 1860 to 1861. When the telegraph lines were constructed it made the Pony Express obselete however the need for a stage and freight station was imperative throughout the 1800's. A station was relavant for the travelers east to Ely and near Tonopah Nevada to provide travelers seeking silver and gold a place to rest while on their way to other towns in Nevada all the way up into the early 1900's. Once the automobile came to be and train such stations like Middlegate seen a decline in use because there was no longer a need to water down horses and travelers had no need to rest at Middlegate when they could make the journey quicker using more modernized means of transportation rather then the long, tedious and slow going stage line. Once the gold rush was declining you had less and less travelers stopping at the station to rest there heads therefore Middlegate begin to fall into disrepair. As a matter in fact many of the local ranchers and miners from Dixie Valley, La Plata, Wonder, White Cloud City, Mountain Well, Hercules, Stillwater, Fairview and UnionvillE Nevada just to name a few carried off many of the zeolite blocks used in the stations original construction. This still happens today with many of the ghost towns we visit and old stations which is why its so hard to find any remaining history throughout Nevada because people feel its okay to haul of the stones found in ghost towns often used in peoples rock gardens and walkways. Thus for many decades Middlegate sat in ruins and almost was erased from the history books. Which is why its so important that we continue to add historical locations on our site so that we can keep these places alive. While today Middlegate Station still stands other stations in the region were not as lucky such as Williams Station to the west and Coldsprings Station to the east. In 1942 an Ida Ferguson bought the station at the BLM land auction and begin restoring the old station. It took her about ten years but once restoration was complete she opened up a bar, gas station and a cafe along the historic Lincoln Highway which was the first Transcontinental highway to cross America. Sadly in 1962 the state re-routed the highway and business here begin to decline. Ida ended up selling Middlegate and retiring because she simply did not have enough funds to fully complete restoration. After she sold the property Middlegate changed hands many times with there being no electricity, phones and a fifty mile jaunt to town the station became an abandoned eyesore on a lonely road to nowhere. Honestly, its easy to miss this place especially when your on a lonely dark Nevada road it all tends to blend and look the same which is open vast desert. In 1984 the Stevenson's purchased Middlegate Station and they restored it with the help of the Churchill County Museum. As a matter in fact the saloon today is known for its "Monster Burger" and for those that want to indulge in the stations history their are plenty of artifacts scattered on the property while enjoying some good eats after a hard day of adventuring. When you think about it their really is no food, gas or water in the middle of Nevada except for Middlegate Station along the way which makes it an ideal oasis to rest at much like the travelers who came through here in the mid 1800's. Thus, very little has changed and when you see the lit open sign that says open one cannot help but to feel hope. Sadly Middlegate Station does not get allot of visitors the owners rely on folks to buy souvenirs, order drinks, food and rent a room here in order to keep the lights on. Afterall the electricity generated here derives from used or rather rebuilt generators. Without the generators there would not be electricity here and without power there would be no people therefore Middlegate is a location I truly relish because it really is on the brink at anytime of virtually being forgotten and fading into history as it almost has at least two different times. Thus I never take Middlegate for granted if I pass by here I get a drink, bite to eat or just walk around the station to admire its American history. I want to be able to do my part and help the owners out so that they continue to remain operable because honestly this gem is really one giant museum that so many pass by because they have no idea what Middlegate offers its visitors. This is a happy place the doors, ceilings and walls are covered with dollar bills, military, fire and police department badges everywhere. Allot of the dollar bills signed and dated derive from celebrities who stopped at the station for a bite to eat there is even foreign currency everywhere. While the outside of the station has allot of relics of the past so does the inside such as an old popcorn machine, mining tools, black and white photos everywhere, old wood stove used to heat the station in the winter and some other artifacts sitting on shelves just merely a few feet from where you dine at. Many famous passerby's have left mementos at the station which includes a bandana country singer Hank Williams Jr. gave to the Stevenson's. Stephen King American Horror author who has written many novels wrote his masterpiece called "Desperation" while residing in Middlegate for six months to write it. If you decide you want to look around you will actually see quite a few pictures of celebrities who came to Middlegate while passing through for a drink or burger its pretty awesome! Because who would ever think that some little place which resides in the desert off the highway in the middle of nowhere could get so much notoriety and attention? When you think about it their is not much left the Pony Express and Overland Stage Station existence so its important we keep Middlegate Station alive for years to come. So many times this station has been on the brink of vanishing from history were very lucky to be able to enjoy it similar to the first pioneers that traveled this route and perhaps came here to rest up or get a hot meal. Sometimes when I am journeying all day in the wild west the only thing I want when the sun goes down is a cold beer and a meal both of which you can indulge in if you visit Middlegate. Seeing that there is no service for 50 miles in either direction Middlegate Station seems like you have reached the pearly gates of heaven! This project was really not about the paranormal but preservation as I want to see Middlegate Station thrive for years to come so that others can enjoy this special historic site with good food and beer for years to come. It would be a misfortune if this place ever were to be forgotten or end up being erased from the history books nor would it be fair to others who stop here for a hot meal and cold drink while journeying across the Nevadan rugged wilderness thus we must all do our part to keep Middlegate in the hearts and minds of all those who have a definitive love for the wild west.
