When the Comstock Lode was discovered in 1859 this brought in allot of miners and there families. This also demanded a need to develop an educational school system even though at the time Nevada was just a territory and had not reached statehood.  The Superintendent of Public Instruction proposed to the Territorial Legislature that schools would have to be built in order to sustain education among the community as it was growing in and around Virginia City.

Prior to Nevada becoming a state there were at least 12 school districts with about 8 school houses. When Nevada did become a state the educational districts grew in 1864 to a total of 34 districts and 17 school houses.  Storey County had the highest population in the state of Nevada even larger then Clark County where the city of Las Vegas currently resides.  There were schools in American CityGold Hill, Sutro, Dayton and Silver City. The Superintendent also a judge in 1864 oversaw three of the districts which were the Virginia and Gold Hill Districts which had two schools a piece and one school was found up near a camp near the lower Flowery Mountains.

There was also private schools including the nuns who taught education and used the St. Mary's Louise Hospital services to work with the younger generation which also guided many of the orphans in the area till the NV State Orphans Asylum could be built.  Prior to this the first school was a rented home by a Mrs. Downing while a short time later another private school was opened up by Miss Gregory. The first public school came to be in 1862 and had 17 students which would be the starts of many things it come including the very large Fourth Ward School building you see photos of on our website.

As the educational system grew so did the tragedies afterall many miners were dying because the conditions were not up to code nor safe. Many children were orphans because more then often women at the brothels ended up pregnant and not wanting the child. While many miners died some of those mothers ended up just leaving everything behind. Not everyone struck it rich here or was a success even living in any of the towns of the American West meant some dangers were involved. Many of these kids never knew day to day what laid ahead while some parents came here to become millionaires others went bust so the kids sometimes came and went.

In 1875 a Great Fire hit the city it burnt down at least two thirds of homes, businesses and even schools. It displaced allot of families and I really do not think Virginia City recovered from the incident. Many of the families who resided here with kids moved on as there was no schools to house all the displaced kids. That is why the Fourth Ward School was built to honor the nation's centennial and to alleviate the overgrowing school system in the area. The school could sustain at least 1000 plus students and was four stories high thus it was seen from all over the city. It had sanitation, ventilation, state of the art heating, two study halls and water pipes which led to all floors. This was the first school to have indoor plumbing on the entire west coast west of the Mississippi thus this location is extremely relevant as it is historic.  However on a downside there was no play ground, gym or means for the kids to enjoy recess therefore any recreation took place in the Weigand Great Hall. Some of the kids would play marbles, tag, jacks etc in comparison most of us as parents wish are kids never knew what a cell phone or computer was because in today's generation kids have a technological mind set not one that involves simplicity.

The school also had single desk and seats as opposed to the benches used in earlier schools in the area. The pupils no longer had to share desk either they had their very own workplace.  Also each story had a drinking fountain and all the toilets flushed. The furnace heated the school in the winter as some of you are aware the cooler months here can be brutal and the Virginia Range in this time period use to receive allot of snow. When the furnace became a fire hazard the school officials purchased wood stove for each class room which you will see photos of them in case your wondering why I photographed them for our website.

This Victorian school was designed by Architect C.M. Bennett and although it was proposed it would cost $30k to construct between the land and the furniture it ended up going over budget to $54k. The Territorial Enterprise which was Nevada's first newspaper that began in Genoa NV who Mark Twain first starting publicizing for stated that the new school in 1876 was "The finest structure of its kind in the state of Nevada" with its beautiful Mansard roof. It had to be considering that the school could house over 1000 students and had 16 classrooms this definitely would make an impact for kids who may not have been able to go to school because of overcrowded school houses.

The school was deigned for all levels of education as it continued to explained as when it first was erected it had the first and fourth graders in the Primary Department. While the fifth and sixth graders were enrolled in the second Grammar Department.  While the eighth and ninth graders sought their education here in the High School Department which at that time they were issued diplomas. It was not till 1909 as to where the curriculum expanded all the way through twelfth grade. More then likely this was done because schools in the city were shrinking as many mines went bust families moved to other places in search of work.  This meant that less fortunes were made in the Comstock just as mills were closing and the population was declining which meant the student body continued to shrink.

Also its hard to know what happened to some of the other schools as you also had a First, Second and Third Ward School. I did do some digging found out that the First Ward School was simply demolished. More then likely the fire, demolishing and new schools replaced many of the older places of education prior to the Great Fire of 1875.  Although that is only a half truth as by 1878 the city was booming so was the school system. There were at least 36 schools, 3,258 students enrolled in public schools and at least 528 pupils who went to private school or were tutored.  A few of these schools were named after wards which is how the Comstock and city was divided due to its size.

When the 1930's rolled around you had less then 200 pupils who were attending school here. The building was beginning to transition into a state of disrepair thus the locals felt that it was time that a more modern building would be built in its place. Thus the Storey County Middle School was built to replace the Fourth Ward School which closed its doors to its last class of seniors in 1936 along with a seperate more modern High School.  Many of the locals felt the school was a relic from another age and well it was starting to fall apart it needed allot of renovations. When the last class graduated the faculty allowed the students to write on the walls leading to the second story there names and a few messages. At that time I am sure most teachers thought for sure this school would never be standing today but it is and so we feel this is a very important educational site for students across the country to learn about.

After the closure of the school it remained abandoned although in 1961 it was declared a National Historic Landmark and added to the National Register Of Historic Places in 1966 the conditions of the structure were deplorable. You had kids sneaking in the school to smoke tobacco while the homeless used it as a place to bunk up for the night. As a matter in fact it would take about 50 years before the school would be renovated into a museum.  Thanks to state grants in 1964 and 1984 to rescue the structure the final grant from the Nevada Humanities Committee funded the museum to be integrated within the school house which opened in 1986. At this time currently as of 2014 only seven of the sixteen classrooms remain open. The principals office remains locked while the basement or lower floor is said to contain the archives. I probably could have seen more but being were a non profit organization $100 dollars is highway robbery when the museum and our group both seek the same thing which is preservation which can only be done by working together therefore with this addition to our site I give students and our viewers some tid bits into the past so they can see what schooling was like back in the 1800's in the American West.

The museum today host a variety of exhibits one of them being an actual 1870's class room including the Alumni Room which has memorabilia and photographs of some of the students. While some exhibits might be permanent others are not. The Comstock is one of those exhibits which features a mining overview of the region and even a room devoted towards Mark Twain who made quite a few milestones during his stay in Virginia City.  While other classrooms the exhibits might change over time honestly if I were the curator I would make all 16 rooms various exhibits but that is just my own personal opinion. Not allot of history is left behind from the pioneer days of the early Comstock its so important that not only do we preserve the school but we also preserve the artifacts.

When the school was being renovated as a museum supposedly the construction workers in a third floor classroom found a couple hundred artifacts beneath the floorboards. There was everything from newspapers, magazines, calendars, tobacco pouches, teacher exams, candy wrappers, student notes, paper airplanes, homework, silk scarf, ink stained handkerchief, wall decor, classroom supplies and even large juniper covered letters were discovered. Some of the papers were signed and when more research was done it was discovered that these items came from the class of 1904 whom these students at least some of them later taught here at this very school.  These type of artifacts within the museum is what gives the school character that includes the doodling's I found on some of the desk.  Today the museum is a cultural center and a place for others to connect to the old west.

When the students attended school many of the sites they seen out the window we have already either investigated or explored. Some of those sites were the
Comstock LodeVirginia Cities China Town, John Mackay Mansion, Silver Terrace Cemeteries,  Tunnel #4 & The Virginia Truckee Railyard, Flowery Mountains, Saint Mary's Louise Hospital & Art Center, St. Mary's Church and Sugarloaf Mountain! As a matter in fact its nearly a 200 miles view if you were to look southward out the windows so the students I can only imagine spent there days day dreaming wondering what life was like beyond the Comstock and eventually those dreams may have turned into reality as these students left the Fourth Ward only to move on to other places in NV like major cities such as Carson, Reno and Las Vegas.

The Fourth Ward School is also a hub for the paranormal rumor has it that its haunted. I do reckon that it is I would love to spend the night here or be able to conduct a more in depth investigation. During our investigation certain desk gave off high EMF readings while we captured some very odd EVP's which helps substantiate these claims over the years made by others who have witnessed or investigated this site.  If you watch some of our videos we have this one clip where I am in the Changing Gallery Exhibit and I walk around the room three times with absolutely not one ounce of Gauss readings. Right before I shut the cam off the EMF detector shoots up to the yellow and red areas which are signs of high EMF. Generally EMF and Gauss are very high when a spirit is present or nearby sometimes power sources can cause it but you can clearly see in some of the videos we do run test to disprove that the schools power is causing these readings thus we must consider that day or night the dearly departed does roam certain classrooms and halls within the school.

One of the most famous of ghost stories associated with the school passed around between the locals is of an apparition named "Miss Suzette" believed to be a teacher who worked here in 1908. More then often she is seen walking in front of the school up the front steps then vanishes. A couple once offered her a ride one evening when they saw her walking down the street. When they dropped her off she just vanished as soon as she began to head to the front doors of the school. I believe there is allot of energy here whether its conscious or not remains to be seen by our team. But you have to think that your looking at over 100 years of history. Energy could be left behind by the students in general without it being every conscious while other students who may have never graduated due to a tragic accident or even sickness may still haunt the halls of the school because the Fourth Ward might have been all they had while growing up.

We only show you a small piece of the Fourth Ward School as there is allot to see and you could spend hours reading about the history or admiring the artifacts within the exhibits. If you truly wish to see the school more in depth you can visit the museum and there website is Click Here: The Fourth Ward Historic School.  They also have a facebook page Click Here: Fourth Ward Historic School Museum Foundation Facebook Page which boast parties, activities, events, pictures and other tid bits you might find useful if you feel inclined to check it on out.
