The Wilson Brothers settled this land in 1863 making a fortune off their gold claims. It was also known as the place where a Northern Paiute named Wovoka was raised with the Wilson boys and took the name Jack Wilson who started the Ghost Dance movement in 1890 which made it to the great plains and being a political movement. This beautiful area was the site of a camp where the Copper Belt Railroad stopped before making its way to Hudson and Ludwig. This canyon is home to the Walker River, Gorgeous Desert backdrops and dunes which today has become a dirt bike mecca for enthusiast. Come on out and offroad with us as we take our journey through this scenic canyon.

This was our first expedition of Ludwig we did not get to do to much but I pulled right on up to a few foundations and could see quite a few off in the distance which would warrant a second more in depth trip. As the sun is going down you can see Artesia Lake, Mount Seigel,  Smith and beautiful Mason Valley. The rocks almost glimmer red in the sun during the evening. With so much more to see we were looking forward to returning. We would have explored it but by the time we hiked to the mine which was sealed off and spent the day earlier trudging through mud at Lahontan we decided to come back for more so please see our other videos.

As we left Ludwig for our very first time it was quite easy to get turned around as both valleys and ranges boast miles off back country roads.  Our journey would take us through Smith and Mason Valley at night as you can see its very pitch black. Eventually we would come upon quite a few homes which were decorated for Christmas so I do make some pit stops. I have to say this valley at night can be a great area to view UFOs and other strange paranormal happens our team gets in many reports from here. Although you will not see any paranormal you will get some history and a nice long night drive in the darkness that surrounds the ghost town of Ludwig!

It was an early morning the sun just came up this time we were heading back to Ludwig to do a more extensive exploration into this once thriving metropolis. As the morning revealed to us many prominent landmarks such as the Witches Circle, Mt. Seigel,  Galena Peak, Smith Valley, Mason Valley, Shamrock HIll, Artesia Lake and so many more. What would we find and where would we go the road to nowhere was ours? The remoteness of this location and serenity is truly remarkable. Not to mention that the road to get here was once part of the old Copper Belt Railroad bed. The valley is full of prominent sites and one can clearly see that the ghost town of Ludwig aka Morningstar is nestled up along the steep Singaske Range. Our adventure had just begin and with these views it became all the more sweeter! One can see in the distance the infamous Witches Circle which are murals painted on the old copper plant a true mill of its time in the region!

Morningstar was just a small camp when John D. Ludwig discovered copper ore here the rest is history eventually it grew into a mining camp then the city of Ludwig in 1911. Our journey would take us up to the Morningstar Mine which today is nonexistent and has been replaced with gypsum mining that was revitalized four to five different times. One can see the massive pit and that dump pile from afar which meant that the mines must had been monolithic during the 1800's. Today one can see the mills including remnants of the foundry but most of these places are long gone. Mining has kind of enhanced the destruction of the town and well based on this video you can see just about everything has been eradicated. It went from having a 1000 residents, electricity, sewage, running water, multiple homes, businesses, saloons, school, church, wealthy mines to having not one but two railroads. Eventually once the railroad left and the mines were depleted by 1960's everybody was gone and the Morningstar/Ludwig Mine was now just an illusion of its former glory.

I call this honeycomb hill and it truly is because the entire hillside is covered with shafts, mines, pits and ventilation holes. Its very dangerous to go near these mines so do not do it we are professionals. Many of the mines below here are toxic so if they fall does not get you the bad air will. I do take everyone in a very safe mine that dead ends with a room that has a bench but as far as we go. In 2008 and 2011 two different explorers fell down the shafts out at Ludwig both men died. I kind of want to use this video to show others the dangers of such holes its very obvious someone had been there recently they taped the barbed wire. These mines are not as safe as some we been to although massive in size you can clearly see the erosion and dark holes everywhere all which can lead to major drop offs. Mining in Ludwig was the cream of the crop while you could ranch in the valley these hills are riddled with rich copper ore which could be smelted then exported on the railroad.

I really wanted to give everyone a birds eye view of how steep it gets in this range as I take this footage high above the ghost town and Morningstar Mine. First though I would have to start off crossing a narrow land bridge with a crevice on both sides which is death if you slip just once it could be your last so DO NOT try this at home! I did not even take my family up here between the mine shafts, steep terrain and foliage its a very rough climb. As you can see I am breathing heavy because I went a few hundred feet within a couple minutes to save my cam battery for our other locations so I had to comprise but the views just watch the video nothing will compare to them. From on top I do point out a variety of landmarks in the region this is what dreams are made of! Sometimes the rewards outweigh the risk what do you think? Was the view worth your time? :) Sometimes a climb like this is worth the view and other times it truly makes you feel smaller then small in such a vast remote land that very few will ever get to see unless it were for explorers like us.

Everything in Ludwig is in shambles more or less it looks like an ancient city that was in a war zone. Between wind storms, fires, vandals and new mining operations everything today is in ruins. With each passing day these shells of their former glory is all that remains but their are plans for everything to be gone so we welcome you to enjoy what remains of this once considered modern metropolis of its time. Most of the town was built up on the side of Singatske Peak. The town had multiple mines, dance hall, church, school, brothels, saloons, offices, stores, foundry, plants, reservoir, railroad depot,  hotels, garbage dump, electricity, sewage, smelter, tram, community center and so much more. Imagine what it looked like during its heyday or peak in 1914? Now all that remains is ruins if that so we encourage you to enjoy this long forgotten town which is no more and try to envision it as one time being a major metropolis which met its own demise eventually and this is the after effect of eons of time, elements and humans which has led this location down the final crossroads. If these pillars, walls and ruins could tell stories what would they say? Most of the homes were made out of concrete or wood in Ludwig. Some of the concrete flooring had beautiful patterns on it and elaborate designs. This city boasted its use of having full operable electricity it was truly modernized for its time unlike other towns in Nevada.

Back a few years ago some university art students painted Egyptian art murals on the pillars of the old copper plant which was massive and ran down the entire hillside. Witches Circle is truly a prominent landmark in the region and can be seen across the valley or from afar. Sadly others have tried to vandalize the circle but one can tell others may have taken it to far to perform rituals here possibly in the past while others just came to deface it by writing over them. The circle has a wide range of art and in retrospect you almost feel as if your walking through some temple in Egypt. Its about as close as I can get so ill take it! I also heard rumors of two statues one was burned the other was put up on a hill to watch over the town site and circle. I did not see the Ludwig Watcher but I read about it and found this mill to be massive. This mill served the town as its castle which kept the town alive especially after it was smelted then in later years the Douglas-Nevada Mining Company took the reigns in 1907 perfecting the art of smelting which prior to that was not perfected till this mill was upgraded. The smelted copper then could be exported to Carson City and then other spurs to be used throughout the country.

Besides all the strange EVP's I captured or in simple terms Electronic Voice Phenomena which are the voices of spirits that we record I found that their were some unseen forces particularly in the center of the Witches Circle. Electromagnetic Energy was unusually high and if you watch the entire video you can see it spike. What had me turn on the cam is when we had a readout of 9 to 10 that is when I had to record the phenomena that was being generated on our EMF Gauss Meter. Generally the only time you will ever get this high of readings is if an entity is standing next to you or you put it up to a transformer, fridge or microwave. I believe that their may be some unseen forces, ghosts of those who tragically died nearby and energies that maybe we cannot explain. This is a very historic old site and its in ruins so only the ghosts of the past remain. Then again I have heard of cases where others do spells, rituals and ceremonies perhaps this has something to do with the unseen forces found at the Witches Circle. If I were to speculate I would say that the murals may also enhance such electromagnetic energy just scientist thought that the pyramids were actually electromagnetic power plants. No matter what the case our instrument does not lie and it does defy explanation since we do not pick up power lines that are so far away so it leaves us wondering if scientifically we just captured paranormal readouts of the unseen kind! It is important that we apply some science and theory into what we do but our best chance of proving such a place is haunted is with physical evidence such as this.

This is the lower area of the copper plant some of the foundations are made of masonry brick work. Their is also rusty pipes we discover protruding through the earth and we find a well. Next to the plant is massive tailings and possible remnants of an ore cart tram which would drop the ore down a chute in the mill for processing. Many other towns had massive mills like for example Thompson Smelter, Mason and Nordyke just to name a few. These mills processed copper as on both sides of the ranger it was discovered and very lucrative. I heard that the train would come right up along the mill so that the smelted copper could be exported. You can also see the lower area of the Witches Circle and even some ruins in blue painted on some foundations. Their is allot of foundations and much to see these plants were massive. A smoke stack not far from the mine blew down in a windstorm in the earlier 1900's. Today these ruins are extensive and worth exploring. Their are also hazards like rusty nails protruding through wood boards and sharp rebar so its very hazardous here. After the copper became exhausted gypsum mining became more mainstream in Ludwig.

Just like any given ghost town you will not see allot unless your willing to climb a few hills and mountains. In this case I climb these mountains not just for the view but for history so that I know I did not miss anything of significance. The hills are very bare their are allot of open mine pits, broken glass, wood boards and great views of the main town site below. But their is also many sites that been erased from history as I climb to see if I can locate anymore prior to us heading out of here. This footage is a stroll through Ludwig's Mining District. You can see a giant piece of quartz, dump piles and the gypsum mine below. As you can see the area is massive then again this was a big city at one time and life was good. You can imagine that many of the locals probably climbed these hills especially during a lunch break to enjoy the view of Artesia Lake and the Pine Nuts from afar. I did not find much while exploring this area seen many fences of open shafts from afar and then very steep canyons that can take you up to the peak. Its important to be thorough when traversing this wilderness as the town is very scattered all the way from foundations to mill sites and even relics of the past that can easily be missed.

Gypsum mining begin in or around the 1920's which is used in construction and drywall. It was revitalized in the 1940s and 1960s as well and now here in 2015. While the aspect of mining has never truly changed in the region what is being mined has. The massive strip mine we are walking past was once part of the Morningstar now it has been forever transformed. Sadly such new mining operations generally eradicate such towns because its profit not preservation that leads to their demise. We are leaving the area and getting ready to take a beautiful offroading journey through Mason and Smith Valley both of which are visible from this vista point we take our viewers through while descending.  We were left with so many questions about the towns more enriched history and the tragedies that may have befallen some its visitors. When hiking past some of the mines you can clearly see that heavy earth movers have obliterated any chance of finding any bottles or in tact relics let along structures that may have stood here once. Rather then copper the new gold here is gypsum. Everything you see in Ludwig is is being transformed this includes the landscape, remnants and relics of the past. This town was regal even the concrete floors had beautiful etchings and patterns in them today everything is in ruins and gone!

We welcome you to take this scenic tour with Lord Rick which starts off near the ghost town of Ludwig traversing across Mason Valley along the shores of the vanishing Artesia Lake. Eventually we end up in the foothills along the Pine Nut Mountains heading south into Smith Valley. This is a very beautiful offroad journey one filled with snow capped peaks, high desert forest, vast expanse and remoteness. This is very special footage it gives you a birds eye view of some of the back country traveling we do to get to where we need to go explore these hidden locations. This valley is full of eagles and before the drought it was full of thousands of birds. Today the cattle roam and life slows down a bit here. Its up to all of you to take a second glance and absorb some of the areas beauty to try to understand how secluded of a town this actually was. It must had been amazing to take the train through this valley but today the only thing moving are those who dare to venture deep into the valley and are willing to take their journey to the outer limits. Live it dream it!
