All the way from Dayton to Johntown miners came to the region in the early 1850's due to gold fever. Prior to this mining in Nevada really was unheard of it was as mysterious to early pioneers as it was harsh. Johntown would be the first amongst hundreds of mining camps to follow and not to far from the original town site gold was discovered here. The miners realized that if they followed the creek higher up into the canyon that the gold was even more abundant which led to the opening of many mines. This became known as the Comstock Lode of Virginia City.  These mines and mills for ore processing were also erected throughout Gold Hill and Silver City NV as well as its mining district.

Today very little of Johntown actually remains except debris found where the camp once existed and a few residential homes. I am sure that since the homes were built on the camps site that they have experienced something out of the norm. Although the region is high desert a section of woods does exist near the camps site that probably existed when the miners first came to the region.

A local tells me there is a dog that guards one of the properties named Lucy and he said she is a mean killer. Which could mean that the dog may be under the influence of negative energies but that is pure speculation. When you offroad and hike through the town site you try to envision its history just as the possibility that the paranormal could be very real at such a relevant site.

The hike throughout the region is masked by beautiful mountains all the way from wild flowers to vista points. Not much has changed since the 1800's horses still roam free in the area. Despite the fact that Gold Canyon contained some of the richest gold mines in the country today most of the mines have long since been abandoned. Nature has consumed the canyon with thick foliage and what little history is left behind. The tailings and debris piles are signs of how big mining was. Most of the miners lived in tents some small cabins. They would cook over a fire, hunt for their food and drink water from the local creek. Life was very primitive and some struck it rich others went bust.

Some of the miners perished in accidents while others were buried near the mines till the Silver Terrace, Gold Hill Masonic, Gold Hill Catholic, and Silver City Cemeteries came to be. Many of the first miners who lived in the Johntown Mining Camp today can be found at these locations. These early daring explorers went off into the unknown which in turn caused a state wide boom. Mining camps led to booms such as the Virginia & Truckee Railroad being erected which ran right through gold country.

Further below I have decided to post historical writings which I am sure you will find interesting all the way from the timeline to the regions history. What is wonderful about our ongoing projects is that every location in this region is somehow connected to one another. Its such an important part of Nevada's state history it is hard to believe how so very few are aware of these locations. So our goal with this addition to our site is not just preservation but to share other locations surrounding Johntown NV. Later in time after the mines grew mills were build such as the Yellow Jacket and Donovans Mill some of the earliest of their kind to process the ore.

It nearly took a decade for the miners to reach the nest egg within Gold Canyon since 1849 which runs for about seven miles and to be thorough our group hiked nearly the entire distance just as the pioneers did. During those ten years restaurants, saloons, boarding houses, stages, stores, fandangos and other businesses were erected. This brought allot of investors to the region which in turn built up the local towns. Although the mining camp faded away it went from camp to village to somewhat city life as the canyons were filled with mines, mills and structures. Today despite that so much history has been lost due to fires or time what does remain needs to be always remembered along with those who made it all possible. If Johntown was never discovered it may have altered this states history even the town I currently reside in may never have existed.

Their is no doubt in my mind that the canyon and its ruins are haunted by the ghosts of the past. Whether we are talking about residual energy or the dearly departed who never left.  This is what makes the area so fascinating is the fact that many of the sites surrounding it have a ghost story or two.  Just as I heard some great stories about others finding relics of the past in the canyon. Everything awaits to be discovered as history is lost it also can be discovered. This is who we are and what we stand for and we are glad that we can finish another epic chapter in our journeys. If you ever wanted to know what the Wild West is about Johntown and Gold Canyon are great examples of that.
