It all started in 1890 and operations eventually ceased in 1959 for nearly 70 years the Donovan's Mill remained in tact opening up the path in Metallurgical processing. Donovan's Mill today still stands as a reminder that it was the first mill to use cyanide processing in the Comstock Lode. The ore would be brought down from Virginia City to Silver City so that minerals such as gold could be separated from the ore.

In 1890 the mill started off to be a very small operation using less advanced methods to process the minerals. As a matter in fact the mill you see today was merged with other operations nearby thus it started off to be a much smaller operation then what you are looking at in our photo galleries. In 1900 the Jackson mill was using cyanide processing it was a much smaller operation only putting out about twenty five tons of ore on a daily basis. As you know ore is extremely heavy in density so technically imagine a few truck loads of it being crushed for only a couple ounces in gold and silver.

That same year Jackson formed a partnership with a Dr. J. Warne Phillips from the University of Nevada's Chemistry and Physics Department. Philips installed massive tailings at the plant then later purchased it in 1904 nearly doubling production compared to Jackson's profit. With production up many of the other mills locally began to use cyanide processing as a way to separate the minerals from the ore. It also brought in new investors such as R. A. Trimble who built a small cyanide leaching plant in 1900 near the Jackson Mill.

The Trimble and Pollard Mill processed a quarter of a million dollars in bullion between 1902 and 1906 outdoing even the nearby Jackson Mill. The plant was then sold to NV Reduction and Power Company which transferred the property to a William Donovan Sr. In 1912 William Donovan had purchased the Jackson and Phillips Mill to expand his current plant. He would also purchase another less known mill called Dazel or as some called it Dazet which was a smaller ten-stamp mill nearby. All these mergers led to the mill that you see as of today which is still in tact compared to many of the mills which no longer even stand anymore.

Donovan for nearly 30 years successfully till his son took over operations. Some believe the reason for the mills success is that William Donovan's plant produced over 100 tons of ore daily the other is that it was mutated into an all-slime plant in the 1930's. Other factors may have been that he managed the Silver Hill Mining Co. which opened in 1872. In 1922 its charter was renewed which was great news considering most mines closed down permanently in the Comstock by this time.

William Donovan and his son had leased several other claims in the region some of those were Lucerne, Echo, Tarta, Succor, St. Louis and Hartford Mines. Those that leased those claimed transported their ore to the Donovan Mill thus it stayed in operation till the end of the 1950's. By the time of its closure the mill worked tailings from all over the Comstock Lode.

Allot of the modifications were brought into effect by William Donovan Jr. such as new stamps brought in by the 1930's. For example in 1935 a ball mill, dorr bowl classifier and other milling machinery was brought in. This was to continue forward with the advancements brought forth in the mining industry. By 1937 bringing the tally of stamps up to thirty. At one time the mill that started off having 10 stamps tripled its production and size since 1890. New buildings were built to house the stamps while other buildings other shops were built such as an assay office and blacksmith shop. There was a vault added with reinforced concrete while the refinery buildings which were aging greatly were restored with galvanized metal.

Then World War II struck operations did cease during this time hell most mines were shut down. Mining whether most of you realize it is nearly a dire necessity and has been a practice that has taken place for many centuries. For example half of the worlds salt is mined below Lake Ontario a necessity in every humans diet. Just as the iron that once built our great cities was mined so that they could become what they are today. However during war time mining operations ceased and most miners were sent over seas to fight against a tyrant thus some made it back while others ceased operations forever. We know this based on the fact that thousands of mines and mills are left abandoned in the state of NV. Some of those sites are the place of haunting's while others are just great historic wonders such as Donovan's Mill.

In 1948 the mill did make a come back as it treated ore from the mills stock pile and cleanup in the Lucerne open pit mine which provided precious metals for the war. Although the mill had shut down in 1959 it was said that since 1922 over 2 million tons of ore were processed which was during this time period a record compared to many other milling companies that rose and fell.

Today the mill sits alone along a historic road which passes some of the most well known haunted locations to date in the state of Nevada. Although the windows of the mill are broken and certain parts of the mill are deplorable most of what stood a century ago still is there. Today the main building, machine shop, concrete vault, refinery, black smith shop and most of the equipment still stands. Sure allot of is collecting dust but it is a piece of mining history. Everytime I walk into a mine or mill I risk my life but I have nothing but respect for the men who built what we know as America. I don't do what I do just for thrills or its ghost I do this for the rich history the same history we bring to our viewers and have so far for over a decade.

Today if you were to walk around the inside of the mill you can still see the original ten-stamp battery's along with the twenty-stamp batteries that were added later on, zinc box precipitation,assaying equipment, two redwood leaching tanks, two Merrill vacuum filter presses and three clarifying tanks. However what is missing is the ball mill and Dorr Classifiers which were additions brought in by William Donovan Jr. The melt house and refinery looks exactly as it did at the time of its closure. The blacksmith shop has not much changed since it was purchased in 1912 with all the equipment including the old forge in tact. Within the complex the crane hoist house still stands actually if you study our first video here you can physically see it briefly. Three of the five thickening tanks still remaining on the property along with the agitating tanks. Just below the mill there are remnants of the cyanide leaching vats, stone foundations and remnants of the Pollard & Trimble Mill. The zinc precipitation boxes can still be seen surround those sites even today if you were to walk around. The complex is amazingly very large and nobody could explore a mill like this just once or twice.

Today the property is scattered with so many remnants of the past such as old stoves, tailings, iron and even ore carts. Not much has changed with the exception that it is an aging structure. Sadly the mill has been subjected some some vandalism and someone has been stealing copper wiring inside which I find very distasteful. I would love to see mills like this restored so everytime I visit one I try to envision what once was. Back in the day most mining towns looked like industrial cities with mills, mines and factories within a few feet from one another. Some made it while others did not however the Donovan's Mill will be held forever in our hearts who can appreciate its history and accomplishments. Only the very few are lucky enough to experience it for what it truly stands for and that includes our viewers who I can share this great cyanide wonder with!
