The Calaveras Big Trees Groves date back to thousands of years ago as today its giant Sierra Redwoods or as some call them Giant Sequoias are some of the largest trees in the world. The Big Trees forest for thousands of years was home to the native Americans who lived off the forest and the Stanislaus River which divides the park you see today. Just as the North Grove contains today about 100 Giant Sequoias and the South Grove has about 1000 of them. Its allot larger then the Placer Big Trees Grove 60 miles to the north of it so before you head out to see such such a magnificent site please do not confuse to the two.

The trees would not become well known till the early 1850's when a man by the name of Augustus T. Dowd was chasing a grizzly bear and stumbled on what he called discovery tree or today as they call it "Big Stump" known to be 24' across and about 1,300 years of age. Sadly when word got out about the giant trees many came on into the region to chop down some of the massive trees to be used for exhibits. The Discovery tree one of the largest in the region was chopped down then taken on tour by Circus promoters just as another group stripped the bark off the "Mother Of The Forest" and exhibited a reassembled version in NYC and in England's famous Crystal Palace.

Despite mans intrusion into Big trees it became know as a place where botanist, scientist, tours and celebrities would come to appreciate.
Some of them would stay at the Mammoth Grove hotel built near this forest so it did become a tourist attraction. Although over the years when other Big Trees were discovered in places like the Muir Woods and Yosemite Big Trees dwindled when it came to tourism.

At one time such big trees were found 180 million years ago across the global today they are only exist in about 75 groves on the western slopes of the high sierras. These trees existed when the dinosaurs roamed our planet and they are massive. When I say massive we are talking up to 300' in height and up to 35' across. The trees found here are ancient dating back to as long as 3,000 years ago back before even Christ walked this planet.

Their are many other jewels found within this forest such as ponderosa pines and incense cedar also found amongst the giant trees. For most this is a resting place for those who wish to reflect. Many of the trees and specimens are named here. Some of those being the Abraham Lincoln, Empire State, Father Of The Forest, Mother Of The Forest and the Siamese Twins. Allot of them are so large you can either walk inside of them or through them.

To preserve the forest in 1931 Big Trees became a state park which today is considered one of the longest continuously operated tourist facility in all of California. I spent the last few years of my life driving past Big Trees and the more I heard the more curious I became. Their are no words to describe standing atop of discovery stump or looking up into the sky at a 250' tall tree. Back east where we are from trees such at this are unheard of so it truly is an amazing site to see in comparison to standing next to one of them.

The forest encompasses about 6,498 acres in both Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties of California. It would be expanded in 1954 for nearly 3 million dollars when the south grove was purchased and many other large parcels of land containing conifer forest. Since many of the larger trees were stripped or cut down the largest remaining one today is the Louis Agassiz Tree which is about 250' in height by about 25 in diameter. It was named after a zoologist much like many other trees were named after well known individuals throughout our history.

I have spent sometime in my research studying this region and over the years I have found out that numerous Bigfoot sightings have taken place in this region. Lets face it this forest has all the right elements for something cryptid or a primate to coexist here. I want others to understand that we have much more expeditions planned in the region that this is only the beginning. Our first exploration we were attacked by an unseen rock throwing creature. The forest here are very thick and their is at least 26 square miles surrounding these ancient groves to explore. Not to mention how many other wilderness areas and forest that surround this region of the sierras anything can be roaming these mystical ancient forest. I can promiste you their will be more to come as we uncover the mysteries of this mysterious overgrown forest of the giants.
