If your looking to get out of the city of San Francisco just across the golden gate bridge is a place known as Muir Woods, Mount Tamalpais and Pirates Cove. This pristine mystical region was home to the Miwok natives for many centuries just as tales of pirates and the Portuguese have been passed around from one generation to the next.

However its not the beautiful shoreline of the Pacific Ocean or its 2,500' great peak that stands out here it is the massive of redwood forest that overlooks San Francisco. Some of the most massive Redwood trees are found within the Muir woods with diameters of over 50' in circumference. Muir beach will always be a special place for me as it was the first real encounter I had with the Pacific Ocean. Unlike the Atlantic ocean where our group had done many investigation along its shorelines the Pacific is very jagged, dangerous and intense. Somehow spending a day enjoying redwoods and finding starfish definitely peaked my interest just as it would for anyone else.

The more I researched about the region the more intrigued I became although my first exploration does not reveal much paranormal it does give our viewers a birds eye peak of an area full of strangeness. For example the Coastal Miwok Tribe believed an ancient evil witch dwelled at the top of Mount Tamalpais however historians believe they made stories up just to scare the white man off their sacred peak.

In 1845 the name Tamalpais came to be with overshadows the Muir woods area below. Nobody knows what the name means however more then likely it was derived from the Miwok tribe which in their language means coast mountain if you seperate the words "Tamal pais"! However in Spanish the word Tamal Pais means "Tamal Country" Tamala meaning the name that Spanish missionaries gave to the local Coast Miwok's in the region. Then another translation is taken from the "Legend of the Sleeping Maiden" which some say is just an urban legend.

From what I found in my research is that a Princess of a Miwok tribe fell in love with a Indian Prince from another tribe. The two tribes were at war or at least did not get along thus their love was not approved by either of the chiefs. The princess passed away some say she killed herself others say she was sacrificed and she was buried somewhere on Mount Tamalpais. The prince who also died was laid to rest but on another mountain called Mount Diablo over at the East Bay. Some say they are together others say today both their ghost wander the hillsides searching for one another.

I have to say hiking in the foothills of Mount Tamalpais and the Muir Woods area is downright eerie. Their is this fog that looms throughout the woods and most of the trees are covered in moss. Its a very overgrown forest till you come on out near the coves and beaches then you start to come up on dangerous cliffs. Allot of people hiking or exploring have went over these cliffs so if you decide you want to hike along the shoreline please use caution. I stood on the cliffs above Pirates Cove and tried to imagine what it is the Spaniards and Miwoks seen centuries ago and ill tell you what its exhilarating nonetheless.

Maybe the reason why the area is so creepy is the fact that at one time a serial killer was murdering female hikers in the region. It is strange over the years how well my psychic abilities have developed but while hiking I was able to feel ghost watching me. I kept thinking to myself why is this forest haunted and I remember telling Tammy that I wouldn't be surprised if at one time a serial killer committed crimes back along the trails which surround Mt. Tamalpais and Mill Valley. I decided to do a search on murders, accidents, deaths etc surrounding the Muir woods region and to my surprise I found a match a man named David Carpenter called "The Trailside Killer"!

David Carpenter started committing crime in 1960 after he attempted murder spending seven years in prison. Just nearly after his release he was arrested for kidnapping in 1970 and again spent seven more years behind bars. He was accused of being the Zodiac Killer which eventually they cleared him as a suspect. When 1979 to 1980 rolled around he raped and murdered five women surround this area which has many overgrown hiking trails as you can see from our photos. He also was suspected of killing at least two others but we may never know the truth since during this time period their were other serial killers in the San Francisco area. When he was arrested he was sentenced to the gas chamber and currently is on death row at San Quentin Prison.

When the trial took place in 1988 the jury convicted Carpenter of first degree murder of Shauna May, Diana O' Connel, Ann Alderson, Richard Stowers and Cynthia Moreland. He was also convicted for raping two women and trying to rape a third female on these trails. A jogger named Mary Frances Bennett was jogging on a trail called Lands End when she was attacked and stabbed to death. At the time Carpenter was not a suspect till DNA years later found at the murder seen matched Carpenters and in 2010 it was a match. She was rapped then stabbed to death thus nobody knows for sure how many victims the Trailside Killer murdered. My advice to any female jogging on these trails is always bring a partner, dog or get a concealed weapons permit. The woods within the area are thick and based on my finds it appears allot of people just come out here to party. Although we are a paranormal research group its also our job to educate others on safety when it comes to locations like the Muir Woods area.

Besides a serial killer the area is also known to have "The Crookedness Railroad in the World which ran from downtown Mill Valley to the top of Tamalpais peak. It was an 8 mile track that many of the San Francisco natives enjoyed just to get out of the city to enjoy the regions pristine views. The steam locomotives ran from 1896 to about 1930. Eventually when roads were constructed to the peak and autos became more popular the railroad was put out of commission.

Some of the earliest wireless towers were constructed near the peak of Mount Tamalpais just as a U.S. Weather Bureau operated a weather station which has now become the Mill Valley Air Force Station. In the 1970's when Mount Tamalpais became a popular spot for bikers such as Charlie Kelly, Joe Breezse and Gary Fisher the area became the birthplace of mountain biking. Today mountain biking is an extreme sport that is popular throughout the Sierras including Lake Tahoe and many peaks along the Pacific California Coastline.

Lets talk a bit about the history of the Muir Woods region and how it came to be what it is today. Back in the early 1900's a politician, businessman and philanthropist sought interest in the Mount Tamalpais region. His goal was to protect the Redwood's since most of them were being logged throughout California. He started with other conservationist the Mount Tamalpais National Park Association in the town of Mill Valley. The problem was in 1903 he just did not have enough funding to purchase the land from the Mount Tamalpais Land and Water Company.

The forest along Redwood Creek at the time was not being logged as it was difficult to get to as today this is the Bay areas last uncut trees of old-growth redwood as some of them date back to over a thousand years ago. William Kent a congressman was a very intelligent individual however since his wife and him ended up purchasing 611 acres for $45,000 which consisted mainly of what today is known as Muir Woods National Monument in hopes to preserve the Redwoods. His intention was to take the two miles of woods and make it a public park. Unfortunately Kent was not a wealthy man and the rest of his money was spent on the gravity railroad which had 281 curves giving San Franciscans some of the best views of the bay from atop of Mount Tamalapais. This was a great idea as tourist could also see the beauty of the Muir Woods. When the tracks were removed they became bike and foot paths for those visiting the woods.

In 1906 the congress of the United States passed the Antiquities Act giving the President the power to declare National Monuments or other locations with historic value. In some form I feel this is one of the best acts that our government has ever passed considering the historical significance of the many locations that today are visited by our team and remain preserved even as we speak. That same year the act was passed the great quake also transpired which demolished most of San Francisco.

A year later the North Coast Water company just outside of Mill Valley in Sausalito had plans to dam Redwood Creek taking the Kent's to court. They had plans to log the trees for reconstruction efforts due to the earthquake in San Francisco. William Kent donated nearly 300 acres of his land to the federal government prior the case going to court thus the water companies case to obtain the land failed. In 1908 a proclamation was signed by Theodore Roosevelt to create the Muir Woods National Monument thus protecting its ancient trees. Although the president was going to name it after Kent he persisted that it be named after a conservationist named John Muir.

John Muir was an Author, Scientist and a Philosopher who came from Scotland and settled eventually in Wisconsin in 1848. He was a wilderness advocate who seen all life forms as an equal. His beliefs today are still widely followed when it comes to the preservation of nature. The school he left at the Wisconsin University he called "The University of the Wilderness" and his influence traveled far beyond the states. He was called the father of national parks as he had influenced the president on numerous occasions to designate various locations to be protected such as Yosemite and even the Grand Canyon for example.

Since then Muir woods has been a well known spot for not just the people of San Francisco to enjoy but even the United Nations back in the 1940's met here. Many ceremonies, plaques and renditions been added to the parks in the area. This is a location also that has been used to honor Franklin D. Roosevelt forming the United Nations and designating Muir Woods as a National Monument.

Most given days Muir Woods, Beach and Mount Tamalpais are so booked that you have to park a mile or two away from the entrance so we decided to hike on some of the more offbeat paths in the area which revealed hidden foundations, wild flowers and even a lone Redwood tree. Their is so much history in this region all the way to the historic homes that grace Mill Valley to hidden nestled locations found throughout the foothills of Mount Tamalpais.

If you recall every watching Planet Of The Apes their are scenes in the movie where the ape climbs to the top of the redwoods looking down at the entire San Francisco Bay and City below. Click Here: Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and another great link to learn more about Muir Woods along with its scenic railroad that began near Muir Woods traversing up to Mount Tamalpais can be found here Click Here: Mt Tamalpais Muir Woods Historical Connection
its a rather interesting read. No matter what the entire area offers a bit of mystery, history, beauty and lore.

From: http://www.nps.gov/muwo/historyculture/stories.htm

September 3, 1892: Bohemian Club Summer Encampment. A large 70 foot statue of Daibutsu Buddha, modeled after the Daibutsu of Kamkura and constructed of lath and plaster, is erected in an area later to be known as the Bohemian Grove. This statue gradually deteriorates over time, and by the late 1920's there is very little of it left.

1903: William Kent meets with local conservationists in the nearby town of Mill Valley to create the Mount Tamalpais National Park Association, with the goal of protecting the redwoods of "Sequoia Canyon" and the mountain above them. The current owner, the Tamalpais Land and Water Company is willing to sell, but Kent is not yet ready to buy.

1905: William Kent and his wife Elizabeth Thacher Kent acquire the property now known as Muir Woods. They purchase 611 acres at the time, for the discounted sum of $45,000. Though the Kents are considered wealthy, they do not have much in the way of liquid assets; they secure a loan from a sympathetic banker friend. Elizabeth questions the expense, but is convinced by her husband's (perhaps joking) response: "If we lost all the money we have and saved these trees, it would be worthwhile, wouldn't it?"

1906: The Congress of the United States passes the Antiquities Act, giving the President of the US the right to declare National Monuments, areas of historic or scientific value, by presidential Proclamation.
An earthquake, rating over 8.3 on the Richter scale, rocks San Francisco and the Bay Area, destroying much of the city and starting fires which burned what didn't fall during the quake.

1907: A water company in the nearby town of Sausalito plans to dam Redwood Creek. They go to court to condemn the land. Kent thwarts their plans by instead donating 295 acres, the core of the redwood forest, to the federal government.

January 9, 1908: Proclamation of Muir Woods National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt, consisting of 295 acres. Muir Woods becomes the 7th National Monument, and the first created from land donated by a private individual.

May 1, 1910: A commemorative plaque is placed and a redwood tree is dedicated to Gifford Pinchot, Head of the U.S. Forest Service and one of the men instrumental in the founding of Muir Woods National Monument. Pinchot was not present for the dedication ceremony.

August 25, 1916: The National Park Service is established by an Act of Congress. The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman William Kent, benefactor of Muir Woods National Monument.

July, 1925: The Muir Woods Toll Road Company begins construction on a new road to the Monument. Initially called the Frank Valley Toll Road, it was carved from an old pack-mule trail, which snaked down the lower, southwest slope of Mt. Tamalpais until it descended into Frank Valley. In 1939, the State took over administration and maintenance of this road, and the toll was removed. Today, this is the most popular route used to access the park.

December 1928: Kent Memorial erected at the Kent Tree in Fern Canyon (present day Fern Creek Canyon). The official dedication wouldn't come until May 5, 1929.

October 1933: Often called the "busiest month" in the history of Muir Woods, this month saw the arrival of the Civilian Conservation Corps, or the CCC, to the park. Up to 200 men were stationed at this new camp, initially called Muir Woods Camp NM-3 The "NM" stood for National Monument. The camp was later changed to Camp Mt. Tamalpais SP-23, with the "SP" referring to State Park.

The men began work in Muir Woods and the surrounding Tamalpais State Park. Projects included a revetment (rockwork stream banks) in Redwood Creek; construction of a stone-faced concrete bridge on Fern Creek; construction of utility buildings and benches; and the construction of the Sidney B. Cushing Memorial Amphitheater (the "Mountain Theater"), near Rock Springs, on Mt. Tamalpais. The CCC completed its last project in Muir Woods in May 1941, and was disbanded shortly thereafter.

1937: The Golden Gate Bridge completed. Visitation to the park triples in one year, reaching over 180,000.

May 19, 1945: Delegates from all over the world met in the spring of 1945 to draft and sign the Charter of the United Nations. President Franklin D. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, shortly before he was to have opened the United Nations Conference. On May 19, the delegates held a commemorative ceremony in tribute to his memory in Muir Woods' Cathedral Grove, where a dedication plaque was placed in his honor.

May 19, 1995: The United Nations and the National Park Service hold a special commemorative ceremony in tribute to the life of Franklin D. Roosevelt and to honor the founding of the United Nations and its achievements in its first fifty years.

July 8th, 1996: An 800 year old redwood tree toppled in the Cathedral Grove of Muir Woods National Monument. About 50 awestruck visitors watched as the 200-feet-tall, 12-feet-wide redwood monarch fell with a roar that could be heard all the way to the parking lot, almost one half mile away.

The tree, which toppled gracefully up-slope caused no damage and required no clean up. The tree will remain where it fell, providing nutrients to the soil, nesting for birds, bedding for plants and water for everything. It can be viewed today in its final resting place just to the left of the United Nations plaque honoring Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the Cathedral Grove of Muir Woods.
