Rock
Springs & Cavern
At this point we thought nothing else could make the night more
interesting then what we already experienced and boy we sure were wrong on
that one.
We went down this really eerie dirt road trying to find an area where we
could park and hike. I got out and got some gear together and the
rain became so bad we had to get back in the truck. We parked in front of
this place called Kings Port a little canoe launch area and it was all lit
up with some old structures and dogs started barking so we went else
where.
The rain was getting worst and a storm was coming in strong fast. I drove up
and down the road slowly it was eerie woods on both sides. My wipers
eventually could NOT keep up with the monsoon like rains anymore. It just
would not ease up at all like most rain storms it comes down hard for a
few minutes then sprinkles this was not the case. We passed this one area
3 deer were on the side of the road staring at us they were not even
scared.
We wasted about 20 minutes driving in hard rain then I parked along side
the dirt road and it eased up a little bit not much. So I told Andrew legs
grab the gear head for the tree line and try to stand under foliage. It
worked for a little bit where we did not get as wet the problem was the
storm did not let down.
To make matters worst we had to take another dirt road and were fairly out
in the open and the rain picked up even worst. Sheets were coming down so
bad that my jacket was dripping. My camera was getting wet I put it in my
back pack and the inside of my backpack was drenched, My hair was
completely soaked, I could not see out of my glass, the water in my eyes
was like eye drops, and I was drinking rain as I was walking. My jeans
were drenched not all of them but most of it was dripping with water. It
was bad and we were in deep as we started to enter a wooded area. I seen a
deer hiding in the woods just standing their watching us he was under a
tree.
There was this structure lit up with green lights looked like an alien
space ship probably just a facility off in the woods of some kind maybe
restrooms or something. I also seen a white beam of light in the sky I
have no explanation for it at this point it was strange though.
We hiked in there was some people camping in the woods in some mini camper
they were at least dry their was nobody that was going to be coming out
chasing us down at this point. Only a fool would be crazy enough to dare
venture into this rain the drops were so large it just was a huge obstacle
for us.
We went threw the woods their was some recreational or lodge type of
building all lit up. It was pretty fancy looking and we went near it then
cut down this hill. Amazingly we found rock springs our vision was very
poor. You want to talk about being scared or being exposed with a weakness
try being blind cause the rain was so bad that our visibility was at 20
percent.
We could not see the stairs going down to the spring, we could not see far
into the woods, I ran into a tree almost, Andrew stumbled on a rock, the
lit building was blurry cause our eyes had water in them and mother nature
cursed us.
The springs gave us hope and light to be able to make it this deep and far
in the storm let us know that very few could ever endure this we were at
our limits. We carefully walked around the spring and this had to be the
biggest spring I ever been to. I seen this one historic tree which was
being held up with this steal beam I took a photo never seen anything like
this before.
We walked over a couple wooden bridges my camera I tucked under my shirts.
They were wet to and I could feel my underwear dripping with water. Things
were not getting any better for us but we made our way threw the storm. We
cared mainly about making it to the cavern for shelter.
The water was raining so bad it was roaring besides the fact that the
springs are suppose to be fairly loud we could barely hear eachother talk.
The springs took us a long time to walk threw the bridges took us to the
other side and at one point they split up in two different channels.
Near one of the peninsulas extending out in the springs was a giant stone
pit for camp fires.
The springs had tall green grass growing in some areas but the water was
crystal clear and it just was a beautiful place. People come here to go
inner tubing and swimming year around. That is all its really like is a
giant stone swimming pool.
After awhile I needed a break from the rain and we seen a shelter with
wood benches we hiked up the hill to it and sat down for awhile. Andrew
kept staring at the recreational building and seen a light shut off inside
now that was eerie we were not alone out here. Nobody was in that building
its probably used for concession, gifts etc during the summer months.
I kept trying to clean my camera lens but everything was wet I could not
even clean my glasses it did no good. I went into my back pack and tried
to find my hat found out I left it home. I had a bandana pulled it out and
water just was dripping from it like a wet wash cloth.
After we took a break we went back out into the down pour and I seen the
board walk go up the hill and what looked like a trail off to the left. I
told Andrew what my plan was and went on a hunch. We made our way to the
trail which cut past a play ground and went down a steep ravine into the
woods.
We made our way down stairs and an overlook. Eventually I seen a few signs
with warnings. We came up to another springs area the place was huge and
this area had a ton of giant rocks and springs with about 4 feet of
crystal clear water. The water was flowing out from a nearby cave.
We started climbing the wet rocks it was not easy we could not see barely
and I made it underneath a rock overhang. I took a break Andrew took a
couple photos of me sitting down. Across from where I was sitting was a
crevice and the only way to get to the cave would be for me to have to
cross it. If I made one wrong error I would end up falling in the water
which was about 4 to 5 feet deep not that it made a difference I was
already drenched as it is.
I made it across and took the gamble diving for the other side. I laid on
my side in the cave entrance. I took my back pack off and started to crawl
deeper into the cave. It was not easy and let me explain to you why. The
cave is a partially submerged cavern which means half of it is dry the
other half is underwater. Of course the dry part has a few tunnels you can
hike and crawl through if you can get to them.
The only way to get deeper into the cavern is you have to drop down into
the water and swim down a 12 foot tunnel and then you can pop up onto
a ledge to the left which has a small dead end tunnel or to the right
which goes further back.
I was in the cave drenched and covered in sand. The sand was sticking to
me because I had to crawl into the cave. There was a steal grate blocking
me from going any further the only way to get into the cave would be to
swim up the tunnel underneath it then pull myself up into the cavern.
Their was a beer bottle in the cave and I had to be really careful cause
right down the center of the cavern was a 12 inch open/crack below that
was the underground spring. So if I dropped my light or camera or if I
fell it would not be a pretty site.
I sat in part of the cavern and heard the moan of a man trust me it was
very clear this was a moan in the cave. I also heard what sounded like
talking but it was gibberish could not make out the words. The cave was
haunted and I felt an extremely strong presence here.
It appears that the cavern is just a couple passages which dead end but if
you were to swim in the submerged part their is no doubt that there are
deep under water caverns so more then likely divers have lost their lives
here. A lot of divers go into underground caverns get lost and end up
drowning I mean the cavern boil generates millions of gallons of water for
Rock Springs. I heard a strange air bubble come up to the surface from the
boil I guess that is common to here gurgling sounds come from a boil of
springs so that was explainable but I CANNOT explain the ghostly voices or
the moan of the man so in conclusion the cavern is very haunted.
I took some photos not sure how they will show up the camera was drenched,
the lens had water on it, I had no cloth to wipe or clean it, I had sand
all over the camera, I had my legs over a crevice filled with water, and
it was a very tight spot.
Andrew waited for me outside the cavern and his cigarettes at this point
were wet and ruined. I climbed out of the cavern and it seems there is a
lot more to explore and see here. Its a pretty cool place though it seems
the dry part of the cavern is small you can almost stand up in it except
for the passages you have to crawl threw and the underwater part could go
probably for miles possibly.
We made our way out of the ravine and springs I found a dirt trail decided
we would take it since it ran parallel with the springs we first found. I
figured we could take a short cut across the woods. Well this trail was
very long and had a lot of bends in it. We could barely see in the woods
the rain was coming down really bad and we were blind in the woods it was
just a vulnerable situation for us.
I figured if we stayed on the path it would cross another trail I seen in
the springs area near one of the bridges we crossed. I was right we came
to a cross trail and I took that to the left and we came out near the main
springs area. But we spent a good amount of time hiking in the woods it
was pitch black it was raining hard and honestly I went off the trail a
few times cause of poor visibility.
We started to make out way back to the vehicle the problem was that we
could not find our way back cause we did not take a trail we roughed it in
the woods. We ended up in some lit up area with a park sign. The lights
were so bright in the rain they looked like sparkles and because my eyes
were wet both lights looked like 10 lights in total so we did not move
forward cause we could not see what this place in the woods was.
We were not really lost we just got turned around and misplaced our path
getting turned around we ended up 10 feet from this lit building where the
light shut off inside. We eventually cut it to the west just a little more
then went northwards..... took the woods and went past that structure
that looked like a UFO in the woods its glowing green lights gave it away
so we knew the dirt road to get back to the truck was close and we found
it.
We found our way back and it still was pouring very hard the whole time.
When I got back to the truck I threw my money out in my consol it was
dripping, cell phone was wet, my shirt was dripping, my jeans fully wet
which drenched the truck seats, and I started stripping down. I have no
working heater so we were cold and wet I had to wipe down with a shirt the
windows cause they were fogged up it was pretty rough.
It was not an easy investigation Andrew pulled out the pipe and was like
damn even that is filled with water lol. We just wanted to toke on up
after this. As I drove away from the storm the rain started to calm we hit
some rough patches going home but we made it back here with hot coffee
waiting I ran towards that hot shower just wanted to get my cold wet
clothes off.
Because I have no heat to keep the windows from fogging I had to drive
with the windows open which did not make us any warmer so Andrew told me
he should donate a heater towards the team instead lol.
It was quite an adventure the cave, the springs, the trails in the woods
etc their is Indian mounds also near rock springs we did not find them. I
have been in similar situations before but usually its dealing with fog,
snow storms etc but this is one of the first investigations we have done
in such an intense rain storm the sheets of rain coming down were so bad
at times I could not see anymore then a few feet in front of me so we were
lucky to have covered as much area as we did but it was pretty interesting
and I concluded from our trip around area that the cavern is more then
likely very haunted compared to the rest of the area.
I could not take to many photos the camera was wet and fairly inoperable
so I am sorry I did get a few though at the cave and near the springs. So
its not all a loss but without the rain we could have gotten more.
In conclusion to the report we finished 2006 with glory and adventure. It
was quite a night for us all these things we do are test and learning
experiences. They teach us how to deal with such obstacles what to do not
do what to bring on future excursions such as towels lol. But they also
prepare us for similar circumstances in the future.
I don't think you will see a ton of ghost photos from our excursion but I
do think fans and members are going to be able to feel this adventure from
the photos I took right from your computer keyboards. It was an odd night
maybe its just the holidays who knows!
I remember a few years ago our pre Christmas adventure was in a ghost town
on a snowy hill and we rolled down it. So every year brings us a surprise.
Andrew said to me damn Rick these investigations get more and more crazy
everytime I go out he was in the Army and been in wars and said he does
not know anybody crazy enough to do what we did.
We were both relieved that we did not spend Christmas in jail with a bunch
of drunk Santa's although we would not have turned it down cause anything
has to be better then being cold and wet in the Florida Tropics not being
able to see where your going.
Andrew said though this journey was one he never will forget and I think I
have to say the same as it was filled with ghost, adventure, and one hell
of a crazy night. That is the thing about being on our team you never know
what you might see, encounter or what can happen its always something new.
A lot of things we do are psychological or mental test like should we push
on, can we endure this etc etc and I have a lot of respect for those that
follow my leadership and do not give up cause it did pay off visiting the
cavern and all.
Even though we face such obstacles that is what makes it fun if their is
no challenge their is no fun to it. Andrew words for Friday night were
just that this is crazy. I think that it takes a special person to do what
we do and I think that those that join us will understand it has its
rewards some of them are personal goals or accomplishment rather.
Andrew said each adventure he has done with us each weekend just keeps
getting more intense and more sophisticated. He is a great investigator
very few new investigators we get on our team are able to handle what I
throw at them and when they do I have a lot of respect and honor for them.
I could not have done all these places without his help.
Now in closing I would like to say its been a great year in 2006 for
our team we did 4 out of state trips, a lot of new places in FL this year
everything from ghost towns to springs to cemeteries to historic sites to
plantations etc and the month of Dec. has been good for us it might have
been one of our busiest months in FL in months. We accomplished a lot and
I am looking for to finishing off 2007 in FL with some nice investigations
out towards the very haunted Gainesville, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville.
In light of things we have a lot to be thankful for in 2006 if you look at
some of the places we have done we are lucky to be safe. We have gotten a
lot of great paranormal photos this year and Friday night was just another
great achievement for our team. So let me take the time to wish everybody
a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope to see everybody attend the
New Years Eve Party to help us celebrate all our achievements this year
accomplished!!
