Rhyolite

One of the largest and most intact ghost towns of Nevada is Rhyolite. This was an area I did a lot of research on before visiting as I been wanting to do an actual real ghost town and this is as real as its going to get.

We started off by driving into this valley surrounded by mountains. It was a very secluded road almost impossible to see anything. We were on the edge of death valley and it seemed nothing even grew here it was all dead fauna on both sides of the road.

I pulled off to the left side of the road and there were a few abandoned structures what there purpose was that's hard to say cause behind it there were water tanks. This area was pretty eerie and I went into them and they appeared to be part of once was cottages cause I seen old furniture inside.

Also near by was some sort of wooden structure perhaps a garage or stable of some kind but these structures were in poor shape barely standing. As we walked further into the desert we found an old car with no wheels and rusting out in the middle of nowhere this would be one of many old cars we found. What happened to the people who owned these cars really remains a mystery.

As we walked down a road we seen figures in white and no they were not ghost they were actually statues made by an artist put out here in the desert for all to see. But the statues were made to look like ghost perhaps cause they sat in the middle of a ghost town.

The one statue was holding a bicycle while many others were on a platform called the last supper. We also found a millennium wheel in the middle of the desert made out of stones and something that looked like an old wood school house.

This area did not go well with Christi or I it appeared perhaps some cult activity took place around here and that the statues actually had a deeper purpose then just art. I did climb up on a few of them and studied the area and that is about all we found. This area also had a lot of junk scattered and artifacts from when the town once stood.

I seen wagon wheels, rusted tin pots, pans, wood furniture etc scattered all throughout the desert on a hill. Christi and I took another dirt road which had a wall to our left made of stones hand built. Eventually we arrived at a female made of a giant stone blocks another piece of art in the desert. Near one of the structures it became real cold and we were being followed by a moving cold spot for awhile. We both were shivering for about a hundred feet.

After awhile we hiked back to the main road and to this large building maybe it was the bank or school hard to say. I had bought a special spot light for this investigation so I was able to illuminate the entire town almost from this area. We could see many different structures off into the distance.

Many of the structures were very large and concrete however in ruins. I could see way off in the distance the jail so we headed on back and stopped at the bottle house.

There was a caretaker in his RV staying near the historical bottle house which was surrounded by barbed wire. He paid no mind to us taking photos as he comes up during the winter with his wife just to make sure nobody is vandalizing the property.

During my visit to the bottle house something ran over my foot and when I looked to my left it turned out to be a kitty. He was a friendly little guy he jumped up on this table so I could pet him and then he followed me around for a little while.

Then I walked over next to the RV and took a photo of one of the most intact structures within the town which was a mercantile store. Eventually the caretaker closed his blinds he probably does not come out of the trailer at night and I can't say I do not blame him. I am sure many strange things happen out this way besides the odd balls who come up here at night.

After visiting the bottle house and mercantile store I got back in the car and took a road which led me to the jail. The jail was pretty eerie and I only was able to get into one part of it the other part was sealed off by rocks and sand.

While standing near the jail cell we heard movement inside and keep in mind nothing can get in or out of the jail so we thought this was odd. It sounded like something big moved as we heard tin shuffling around on the floor. I peaked my head through the cars and the room was empty with a little bit of debris. So our first strange occurrence was at the jail where probably many were hung near.

Eventually we got back in the car and I came across another intact cottage which I went into then eventually hiked on out to some stone foundations in the desert. I did not even think about rattlers I just started jogging to the foundations weaving in and out of the brush.

Eventually after getting back to the car we started to take that same road when we came up to a mound. Christi became startled when she seen something fly out behind the mound which was human sized and had giant wings. She said it looked like the mothman or a gargoyle.

I heard something many years ago about dragons being seen around old mines in Nevada I thought maybe what she seen was something like that. I did not see it but she said it flew straight up and off to our right. At this point she was not getting out of the car her face was as white as a ghost and she said Rick I handle the ghost but monsters/cryptids is your thing lol. I did manage to get her out of the car so we could inspect the area the creature was seen at.

We climbed up the mound and over the barbed wire and there was a sign that said danger mine stay out stay alive. The mine however was filled completely with rocks so there was no way to enter anyhow. I did not see any sign of the creature, prints, dropping etc. Whatever she seen moved fast and got out of the area quickly probably cause it was busy feeding and my high beams startled it.

At this point something out in the desert was making noises and moving around out there we do not know what it was. I lit up the area and could not see anything which I thought was strange that if something this big was flying around why can't I get it on spotlight. At this point I knew whatever it was probably was on the ground hiding in some brush just watching us.

We got back into the car and made our way to the Tonapah Depot. I was shouting out for this creature to face me out into the desert Christi was about to slap me silly. She thought I was pretty crazy but that is what I came here for was the glory of seeing and capturing something on film.

I walked around the depot and this had to be one of the most eerie scariest looking buildings in Rhyolite hell even Nevada. The building had a old caboose out back behind it which I walked around in. It also was surrounded by barbed wire.

I noticed a lot of debris around the train depot and a mine only covered with a wood board. I wanted to go down into the mine but really did not have enough man power or equipment for it.

The train depot was made of stone and had some interesting architecture. The one entrance had a stone archway while many pillars had carvings right into the building itself. It had an upstairs and many different entrances.

Christi waited outside and I went on into the train station myself. The first room I entered was a room full of bottles of liquor. This probably was the passenger waiting area since it was very large and there was a ticket booth nearby.

There was a long hall with an old fridge in it which I took a small room to the left. There was also a small room to the right that I did not go in that probably led to the upstairs. But I did not want to leave Christi alone to long with that flying creature out there. I left her near some lighting since I assumed that whatever this was perhaps was nocturnal and loved the dark.

I made it all the way down the hall into a giant room. Most of the inside of the station was made of wood there was a few cold spots and honestly I felt so many ghost it was almost overwhelming even for me.

When I got ready to enter the kitchen area I heard talking it sounded like two men near by. I did not know where the voices were coming from but they seemed to be coming from an area I just walked through or in that general vicinity.

I do not know how much m ore there was to explore but I started to head out cautiously. It was apparent that there were ghost inside the train depot and they knew I was here. There were signs that I was the first person here in years. The place was dusty and almost impossible to get into.

I had taken a few photos took one last look in a closet which was full of old junk and headed on out. Christi told me she heard old music playing near by perhaps coming from the depot I was just in so yeah this place was full of activity. She also said something out in the desert was moving around she kept thing it is what she seen. She said she could feel it close by and watching us.

The investigation was almost done but we had three more structures to check out. One of them was ruins of an old general store the other two were more foreboding. One of the structures had three stores and was in total ruins. We could not walk in certain areas cause it was a long drop into the basement so I had to climb on in carefully where I found this enclosed room full of writing on the walls. I also found one other giant set of ruins where I walked around in for awhile that area seemed to be pretty cold. Christi at this time was not going to get out of the car she was done after hearing and seeing things. So I wandered around one last time too take some photos.

Eventually we did get going back down the main road where we both had a sigh of relief. I feel perhaps more was out their to explore its a big area with a lot of dirt roads leading to various sites. I really would not mind revisiting the train depot here. I did get out of the car so Christi could take a photo of me next to the sign then we proceeded on into Bullfrog.
