Fort Matanzas & Rattle Snake Island

Wow this has to be one of the most adventurous things we have ever done as we conquered a complete island. Imagine being trapped on an island surrounded by water and a fort lays off in the distance a couple miles away.

I will not tell you how I got to the island but lets say a few pals of mine said there is no way you can get to that fort or on that island without taking the ferry lol. So maybe I swam out to it or maybe we got a boat but I shall never tell its Xmas PGS miracles happen lol.

Anyhow we got onto the island and were sorting threw some sea shells oh man some of the nicest shells I ever seen I found here. I grabbed a bunch for my kids as souvenirs and yes folks this is one of the times its okay to take something from a haunted place.

The sand was gorgeous the water was fairly still and it was very well lit on the beach we were on. The moon however was behind clouds so we had a dim dim light. We hiked along the beach found this cool lagoon and I was impressed with this island felt as if we were pirates stranded.

Andrew was in the army and said wow cause he has done some crazy places and been in battle before so he thought this place was even interesting being so isolated from everybody.

We ran into a problem which was a saltwater marsh and wet lands. There was low laying areas with a lot of mud like quick sand. We had to be careful we were not sure if their were even alligators or salt water crocodiles out here hiding. We went very far the fort was close but unreachable and to our right was another small island and channel. I thought about hiking in the muddy channel believe me and then following the water to the fort but there are things on rattle snake island that can cause you to die.

We back traced and were on a bunch of little islands in the middle of a marsh and I found a way for us to get around it. We decided to go into the woods problem was it had no trails it was just thick run offs with a lot of evergreens and scrubs. We went into the woods hiked a pretty good ways and found ALOT of debris back here hidden in the woods.

We found pieces of wood, beer bottles from the 70's, a shoe, can goods, wood objects, a buoy, etc one thing scary about this island is that even though the woods were at a much higher elevation we studied the land and there are signs that the tide can get high on rattle snake island but we also found proof that the island has been underwater perhaps during storm surges one sign found of that is all the debris scattered deep in woods. Not just a beer bottle here or there but piles of it collected in the tree lines.

It was a sad situation and well we made our way threw the woods no trails had to crawl on our hands and knees. It was bad so bad we could not even seen the sky above us. I turned one corner in the woods and seen this giant white ball of light go past me that was as real as it gets.  We eventually came on out to this creek it was deep in some areas lots of channels. The channel we came across cut right in our way even by crossing it we would end up in some low land not good trust me.

So I took us back into the woods and around a lot of brush and we came out to the end of the woods. We had some way off to the left and some off to a half of mile in front of us. The high ground ended and we would have no choice but to descend into the wet marsh taking it slowly cause the water could be deep or filled with hungry alligators.

We slowly made our way across it talk about a hike at times my foot went into mud 8 inches deep trying to pull our feet out of it was hard each step was a struggle. Andrew followed my leadership and I did a fast step using the brush to give me some traction in the deep mud. We avoided the deep areas and came to one of our last obstacles which was this creek and yes we crossed the channel. Oyster shells grew inside the water and they were sharp one wrong fall and we could cut ourselves open.

We made it to one more marsh this one was not to bad and up a hill where the fort remains. What a feat Andrew and I were exhausted we climbed to the top of the fort and I had a Gatorade and some food. The view over looking the Matanzas River was beautiful. We sat by the cannons took a few photos then we were paid a visit but the boat turned around guess they changed their mind. We speculated the reason for this is A. Even if they seen us who the hell is going to follow us into a marsh B. The area is thick and over grown C. They were to far away to do anything but the boat did shine a spotlight from a good mile away towards the fort lol.

After this we walked around the fort a few times man this place is cool. Their was a flag on top about 5 cannons and a archers tower. I mean basically it was built here for a reason where it could fire cannons down the river and shoot people with arrows who slowly tried to cross the marsh which believe me its a slow hike.

Their was no sense of eeriness at the fort although it has its share of horror stories. We walked behind the fort and found an old sea wall and what use to be the forts harbor so interesting. The waves were carefully hitting shore way off we could hear the ocean I mean even the moon finally came on out.

We took more photos I had one good cold spot that was it and we made our hike back over the marsh trying to follow our path which was nearly impossible. Our prints were buried and we had to calculate our direction. If we cut it to far we would miss the cross over where the channel was shallow if we crossed it way to the right it would take us to other channels or woods.

We made it back hastefully but we marched it nonstop I was so happy to see the woods. We took the entire woods back to the beach. The woods were odd at times they would come on out to the mash or edge of it but for the most part we stayed dry going back not that it made a difference feet and legs were already muddy.

One area we came out to was a clearing of woods and I did seen an apparition I thought it was a trick between the tree and light. But what it looked like is a figure that moved right to left right in front of us. It was fast I got a one second view and it was a human figure almost looked like a soldier in brown clothing. I was pretty amazed at all the little things in this area that go on.

We almost got lost in the woods I mean no trails just weaving around trees that are close together. You just do not know what is in the woods its called rattle snake island for a reason. I believe we did see a few rattle snake holes here. The woods were a maze cause here you had beach, marsh, woods, marsh, then beach so you could end up getting turned around if not careful.

I will say something big did move around in the woods we have no idea what it was but it was not afraid of us. I tried to seek it out and it was just walking around without even fear of my light or me trying to seek it out. We moved away from it we were tired, our feet were cold, wet, and we had a long night.

We finally hit the beach moon glistening over the water and our investigation of Fort Matanzas was conquered.

In conclusion to this report it was a nice night I will be straight up and honest tell you that we hardly got any paranormal evidence but that is just how it goes some nights you see things some nights you capture things on photo. We ran into the festival in Saint Augustine's then the bridge being ripped apart then the security guard in the one cemetery and then the gangsters near the other cemetery so it was not a night made for the ghost lol.

But the fort was different I mean it was like a survivor show adventure and we had some experiences while up here. Andrew said to me its one of the best adventures he has had for a long time and he has already logged about 7 investigations with us. I mean just to get here gave us a feeling of what hundreds of years ago they had to do to conquer such a place which is hike threw this island which Andrews opinion is simple from our journey "Rick people could die here" and that is true.

You got the Matanzas river and their are gator's and big ones. There are signs where we were at of them like gator paths, tracks in the mud etc all it takes is one 16 footer and it could very well be your final resting place. So will we conquer this island and its fort once again probably not but in reality doing it once says a lot about how hard we work to bring you guys these pictures and stories.

This was our special Christmas investigation would have wished more came out next week will not be so extreme but we will go out for a few places then take two weeks off for Holiday break:)
