The Ormsby County Poor Farm at Clear Creek, 31Ú2 miles southwest of Carson City. Superintendent Abrahams is on the porch and his wife is standing in the yard. Two Civil War veterans died while staying at the farm and are buried in what is now Fuji Park.
Daun Bohall Collection/Nevada State Museum

For almost a century the Ormsby County Poor farm was a place where the less fortunate could earn a buck and seek shelter. Carson City had many politicians and prominent individuals but at the same time the ones who did not live in big old wood mansions often lived on ranches and farms like the one we investigated on this page.

The Ormsby County Farm came to be in the early 1860's along clear creek. At the bottom of the canyon there was once a flume that brought logs down from Glenbrook and Spooner from Tahoe. That lumber then could be used in the building of many mines in Virginia City NV. Very few know this but just over the mountains behind the Poor Farm is places like Tahoe and Spooner lake which at one time was a place where lumbermen cut down parts of the forest so that Carson City and other areas could be built.

By the time the 1960's came around most of the ranchers and workers on the farm were extremely elderly thus the county closed the farm putting its residents into nursing homes in the area. This stress may have called Basil Woons wife Fuji to die. Basis was an author also a screenwriter who made a donation to the country that he requested be used to build a public park to honor his wife. This in my opinion was a great idea considering the grounds have some of the oldest trees in all of Carson City.

Over the years the poor farm was transitioned into a beautiful park slowly removing all remnants left behind when the farm existed. Although if you look hard enough in the woods and along the creek you will find pieces of foundation. Just as their are a few old garages made out of sheet metal and wood. Despite all that the grounds were the farm existed has been turned into a park with shady trees, pond for fishing, picnic benches, jungle gym, memorials etc. The other section to the poor farm today is the Carson City Fairgrounds which we also investigated at night and its pretty eerie back here. There are feelings of being watched when you roam this park late at night and its strong.

Sadly their have been many attempts to remove the park at one time a business wanted to buy the land surrounded the park turning it into a shopping center. Which in my opinion I have to question this myself considering how much land is available around the Carson Valley. At one time there was a grass roots movement called "Save Fuji Park" and it seemed to work because as of now the park is actually being renovated to enhance it to benefit many of the good local folks of Carson City. Not all areas have been saved however for example a place called Bodine's was removed for a new casino which sits right along the edge of the park itself.

Despite the closing of the farm two older timers never did leave this location and today they are buried within the park itself. Although the cemetery is very small my purpose for visiting the area at night was to visit this little cemetery nestled in the clear creek wooded area. The two men buried here are John Thoroughman and James Johnson who were both military veterans.

James Johnson was enlisted in the army in 1865 and worked at various ranches in the Carson area when his services were no longer required by the military. He was admitted in 1909 to the Ormsby County Poor farm where he left and came back in 1910 where he ended up passing away. Much like any potters field or poor mans cemetery when Johnson perished he was buried right then and there on the property.

John Thoroughman who was a soldier for the army in Dayton in 1863 served for three years until he was discharged. From there at some point he served the poor farm I do not have specific dates but he did die in 1909 and was buried prior to James Johnson. His grave sits just a few feet away from James Johnson's grave surrounded by a wrought iron fence in a wooded area.

Speaking of cemeteries believe it or not the Ormsby County Poor Farm had some connection to Empire Cemetery a very historic location we visited prior to this investigation. Further below you can read about a ghost story that is related to the poor farm so we know that it is possibly haunted. Some say a bride haunts the grounds but based on the apparition photo we captured on our first investigation I have a strong feeling that this is not the only ghost here. I read somewhere that there are other bodies buried within the park with no grave marker at all so perhaps this has caused some discomfort amongst the dearly departed who roam what once was the Ormsby County Poor far. . The farm had at least 15 to 25 residents that worked here and some died here its that simple. Everyone played a part in the survival of its residents for example one individual grew vegetables that fed everyone while another one milked the cows.

Poor residents used to be kept at farm

Aside from marking the resting place of the two Civil War soldiers - John Thoroughman and James Johnson - the headstones in Fuji Park also serve as reminders of the location of the Ormsby County Poor Farm.

The farm was started in the 1860s on the south side of Clear Creek for the less fortunate members of society. It served as a temporary place to live and work for residents of Eagle Valley.

In 1956, a jury issued a preliminary report recommending the farm be closed and its 18 residents be put in private facilities.

The county commission fired the farm's manager in January 1965 and closed the farm later that year, according to newspaper articles.

When it closed, the farm was home to four residents.

Johnson arrived at the farm in February of 1909, left in March and returned in June. He left again in September and returned in January 1910. He died April 13, 1910 at the age of 74.

Thoroughman arrived at the farm before February of 1907, left in February and returned in March.

He left again in May and returned in December, shortly before his death Dec. 19, 1909, at the age of 71.

During their time at the farm, the men paid $10 a month.
