We were leaving Webber Lake Station behind which back in the day served the early pioneers who sought refuge in Summit City aka Meadow Lake. This was our first journey here which contains two parts. The part of the video is the trek you make as you descend along cliffs till you reach the bottom of the basin. Ill take everyone on a few narrow woodsy roads some rugged some were the ghost towns city streets that once had residential homes, saloons, businesses etc. When you see me drive through the 160 acre open area near the lake your going to notice that nothing remains. The biggest structure here is the dam built in 1858 prior to Summit Cities rise in the mid 1860s. We would eventually park hiking out to the dam crossing it to explore the other side of the lake and skipping some rocks before sunset here. At one time the Martis Indians etched petroglyphs in the rocks above the lake not to far from this dam. Reservoirs were necessary to provide drinking water to some of the local towns in the area and be used in mining. In this case there were seven stamp mills near this lake therefore the dam was vital for containing the water. Meadow Lake is one of the highest bodies of water found in the Tahoe National Forest. Its easy to envision the ferry boat that use to take the miners to the opposite end of the lake to visit the girls at the Hurdy Gurdy Houses.

Our second expedition was much more intense as this time around we were camping up here. The clip starts off with me trying to find an area we could pitch camp then explore the platted streets of down town Summit City aka Meadow Lake.In 1863 Henry Hartley a trapper discovered some gold up on some quartz ledges above the lake. He lived here as a hermit but when word had gotten out by 1866 Meadow Lake had over 80 saloons, post office, lumber yards,  six mills, 5000 residents, 9000 square foot plaza, ten stores, school, church, two hundred business structure, five hundred residential homes, ferry/vessel, black smith, six breweries, stock exchange, assay office, daily newspaper and thousands of claims. The Comstock crash kind of forced miners hands to try staking claims elsewhere so many pioneers flooded into this area. Due to extreme winter weather and the inability to process the gold ore found here the town died as fast as it rose. Mark Twain's brother Orion lived here a short time and Mark Twain also came down for a visit but found it to be quite serene as by the time he arrived people were leaving by the masses. Many families would stay here till about 1872 and by 1873 Hartley and his Excelsior Mine were left all by themselves. While multiple times mining attempts were revitalized with new mills and even a boarding house being built around 1914 they simply did not last. Today nothing remains minus a few pieces of wood, foundations, glass shards, nails and perhaps a few mines in the area. We were lucky we were camping on the lake in the forest right on the edge of this once booming city. Sure everything is gone but one thing that will never change is the areas rich history!

Old man Henry Hartley died a lonely old man you see after he founded the town by 1872 everyone cleared out. He lived as a Hermit by himself before and after the founding of the town. Back in 1892 he was found deceased in his cabin some have always suspected that he was poisoned and did not die of an opium overdose therefore his wife whom ended up killing a Nevada Senator two years later had always been the prime suspect especially after she sold his holdings after being estranged for so long. The journey will take you from our camp site on Meadow Lake to the top of this hill deep in the forest to an area that overlooks the town site. Right in the middle of this graveyard is Hartley's final resting place and also about sixty other graves. Many of the gravesites found on this hill are piles of stones, wood or iron crosses. One can imagine many of the graves are unmarked its hard to know since so many trees have fallen back here. You can see some old fence post also as at one time this graveyard had a wood fence which only its post remain. The people that are found buried here may have been pioneers w ho came to the area later but more then likely their ancestors once lived in Meadow Lake back when the town itself was booming. This cemetery is very haunted and was one of the premier projects we took on during our expedition here. After the cemetery we did a little fishing as you can see sunset is gorgeous out at Meadow Lake.

Our haunting investigation would transpire at midnight downtown our first night of the second expedition. The woods surrounding the town site are very thick perhaps even rugged so its a bit foreboding because you cant really see into them. Yeah this is a super dark video but you are really listening to it for the audio as I hike and journey down some of the historic streets that once graced this boom town. At one time there were over 80 saloons, massive 9k plaza and many stores. However, as of today nothing remains so the dark streets are bare their are no street lights or lanterns directed you which way to go. It was an odd night prior to the hike some super sonic jet made a plume which made the moon look hazy and various colors. I heard that same night some vocalizations prior to the night hike and it was a crisp eerie autumn night. Its so dark out here at night that all the stars are visible but now that the town is long gone seeing the lake let alone anything in the area is impossible. At one time miners may have been getting into drunk brawls right where I was walking.

Before getting ready to backpack out of here we did a little fishing as the sun came up. We had no idea that in a matter of hours we would see so many great things. I know very little about this old mining camp but we found it accidentally hiking through the woods not to far from Meadow Lake. Our journey would take us over the dam along a rushing creek and eventually we would enter a clearing which revealed a series of old structures. The site was scattered with miner cabins, shacks, stone walls, debris, foreman's house, bed springs, ore cart rails and so much more. Based on my investigation here aside from the cemetery this place is dead haunted almost a sense you kind of feel watched back here. In one of the cabins can goods remain on the shelf, clothes are still on hangers and the coffee is still sitting on the table as if one day someone just walked away from it all. More then likely this camp was just one of many left behind when Meadow Lake was abandoned and perhaps mining took place on and off here into the 1900's. Its very remote and secluded but strangely we had to kind of book it here because some guy was in the woods on the back side of the camp. Many of the cabins are collapsed back here there is even a two seater outhouse. This camp seems to be all that remains of Summit City aka Meadow Lake. It pays to explore so this was a nice find and a great way to start our second day to our second expedition.

Just a couple of guys chilling out at the lake my son went swimming, the other one took a nap and I just merely took in the view. We sat across from the dam so we could enjoy the view of Old Man Mountain. This is a large lake actually its very hard to get out to it unless you have a good high clearance vehicle or your willing to do some rock climbing in the basin to get to it. We just left Sunnyside Acres mining camp with no trail other then to descend through the Tahoe Forest and eventually down the steep granite rocks. Just like most of the bodies of water this is another reservoir. The water that gets released from the Meadow Lake Dam eventually makes its way into this lake. You can clearly see the lake waters are very low that is because drought has a significant impact on reservoirs such as this one. My sons rock skipped we all had a great time and we needed it because Sunny Acres was really freaking strange. I was joking around a bit on my two way radio with Tammy but instead some guys picked up the feed and were looking to kick my ass. So we did not stay long and we kind of stayed under a giant fallen tree because while I was filming this they were on the dam looking for me. In light of the hillbillies chasing me over my anal probing comment I lived to tell about it by trying out in the next snap into a slim jim commercial. Like I said good times!

We were leaving behind the Fordyce Lake basin and it would be one hell of an ascension out of here. We were not on any trails and along the way we found what I call Hermits Rest which resides under this massive tree and above the lake. Its quite possibly Henry Hartley stayed here or even for that matter visited a fellow neighbor. Life was simple living up here when the town died only a few men tried a hand in mining up here and some lived as hermits. This cabin had a workshop underneath while a ladder to the second story where a den with a sleeping area was kept. After visiting Hermit's Rest we made our journey to the top of Hartley Butte along the way we discovered an actual gravesite. More then likely it was named after the founder of Meadow Lake and could have been the first location or claim where gold was discovered here. From on top you can see all of Meadow, Fordyce, Faucherie and Phoenix Lakes. After the journey we did some metal detecting downtown where the city once stood very little remains but a few nails and broken glass. It was my sons birthday also so we gave him a mountain man birthday with good food and a lantern as your birthday candle lol.

French Lake is a daunting task to get to overshadowed by English Peak, Rugged Cliffs and overgrown forest. It was named after the French whom came to the area in the later 1800's in hopes of buying out all the claims in Meadow Lake and revitalizing mining. Henry Hartley was ecstatic when the investors were ready to buy his Excelsior Mill and Mine. We would start our journey at the top of the basin eventually finding a hidden pond where I recorded some tracks. Although some are bare other ones especially the very large one we found is very strange. The rangers tried to tell us there are no bear in this area I beg to differ.  More Bigfoot sightings and tracks been found in this national forest then almost anywhere in the country. No matter we would press on where we pushed through the overgrowth then climbed down off the cliffs right down to the bottom of the lakes primitive shoreline. This is a very remote lake full of little islands, pristine waters and a nice beach you can drink a brew on like I was doing when I filmed this.

On the eve of the eclipse camp was packed up and we were now exploring some of the old residential streets of this once booming mining town. I hiked out to an area to look for tracks but the marsh land and pond were dry therefore I decided to climb a rocky outcrop so I could enjoy the nice views of English Peak. Their are no trails back here I just climbed down into an old creek bed then up onto these cliffs to try to see if I could locate any small ponds that might reveal some Bigfoot tracks. You can see how vast the area is anything could remain hidden back here. Just on the other side of these cliffs is also French Lake. With hours to spare along one of the dirt roads is a cross a reminder that this wilderness is meant to be taken seriously and some died braving it. I finish off the night enjoying the eclipse from the Meadow Lake area and wrapped up one of our greater expeditions.

This is a clip from my sons 14th birthday party just a week after our Meadow Lake trip. His first present was me taking him up to Meadow Lake where we fished, hiked, camped, explored and rafted. However, since on his birthday fell on the camping trip we had to wait to get home so we could host him a party with his gifts. I always try to let my friends in on my life a little because in between all the hard work we do chasing Bigfoot or the paranormal we also live life something that should inspire all of you but also know the real Lord Rick behind the scenes. No matter how strange the family is it is what you make of it! We like to have a good time and Jarrod is very special to us. Over the past few years he has much to celebrate for especially helping me with so many expeditions and finding so many great Bigfoot tracks. Cheers
