I was so excited to visit Alton because I heard so much over the years about how haunted it was. But it also is a very historical little town that has many gorgeous old mansions and rich history dating back prior to the first white men coming here to settle.
 
I have always wanted to go to the McPike Mansion especially around Halloween its a pretty cool place. Sad to say when we were up here the mansion was closed. They are always making new repairs to try to restore it to its grandeur state but I just was not around for the grand tour.
 
I had a friend that had access to the mansion and lets just say he dissed me. So tired of other paranormal groups not working together with me. I am always open to working with others and making a day of it. If I come all the way out to Illinois and you cant even give us a couple hours of your time then your being rude end of story!
 
We started off the morning having a big breakfast as a matter in fact prior to visiting the mansion I was trying to find remnants of a town site. Ghost towns are rare in these parts but they do exist problem is the place I was going to was so overgrown and I did not want to waste the entire day away. But at least I got to drive up on a levee and do some hiking around.
 
When I drove up into Alton it was still morning out and a very lovely one if that. Even though its October flowers were still blooming, grass was green all around the mansion and photos did not do this place justice. Its allot nicer to see in person an I was pretty excited to be here.
 
I actually talked to the owner they told me to come back later and I was suppose to I just did not have the time because I had other investigations in Alton. But at least I got to meet them and talk to them a little bit. My main goal was just to walk around on the grounds take some EVPs and photos.
 
I was going to explore the wooded area behind the mansion first where I was greeted by this cat with a brindle color. It was strange because that same cat was also in front of the cemetery when I pulled up I am telling you not sure if it ran a couple miles there or what but this was a very unique looking cat.
 
At one time this was not a woodsy area behind the mansion but rather a place full of gardens and of course the McPike Grape was grown here. I found what looked like an upper burial crypt or grave site not sure though but it was broken. I did not see a coffin unless they removed it and left the crypt itself.
 
Their are quite a few open windows upstairs that are just wide open you always get that feeling as if something is watching you. While you can sort of see inside one or two of the bottom floor windows you can clearly see this place is in bad shape and is just a shell of its former glory. I mean come on it had 11 marble fireplaces today all of that is gone.
 
Their was some Halloween decor hanging up around the mansion they do give ghost tours here sometimes. I did not find the mansion spooky although the door going down into the basement should have been left unlocked just for me because the basement seems to be a really awesome feature this mansion has because its made of stone.
 
I hate when mansions like this get vandalized so bad that they lose their historic value this place use to have trim along all the ceilings and staircase. It was really elegant back in the day and now the grounds just have piles of debris while the inside is hollowed out. I would love to see when the mansion does get fully restored.
 
I really did not investigate this place as I wanted to but I love to urban explore and take photos. We all know its haunted its been proven haunted so rather its just nice to wander the grounds smell some flowers and admire the history here.
 
It looked much different at one time such as the front had a fountain on the lawn that since is just an empty pool no longer flowing. Their seems to be also two gravestones leaning against a tree both are broken. I know one of them at least is a grave you can slightly read a name on it or epitaph. Back in the day it was not uncommon to bury your loved ones on your own property which I think should still be done today just because it makes more sense to be buried next to the home you loved.
 
I did not experience much here but my EMF did give me some readings which sometimes I have to discount because power lines do run to the home therefore that is all those readings could be just that. No less its about having a little fun nobody pays me to do what I do. I do it because I enjoy history and if the ghost choose to take the bait then awesome if not I still get to explore places like these! A short time after the mansion a little over a mile away we went to visit the dearly departed at Alton National Historic Cemetery.

Their appears to be grave stones leaning against the tree in front of the mansion itself. I know one of them says father the other is hard to read. I just found it to be intriguing does not mean anyone is buried on the property but its possible I mean back in the day this was common to bury your loved ones on your land.

Below another odd stone crypt like encasement in the woods behind the mansion. It could be a burial plot or just a bench to sit on but the entire inside of the stone block is hollow as if a coffin once was inside of it. I did not see a coffin anymore its just hollow and in shambles but its possible their was a coffin at one time within it. They probably moved the coffin to the the Alton Historic Cemetery if their was one here.

Breakfast prior to us visiting the mansion site. Dining out is just part of the experience when exploring. Its something I implement when I do my work nothing like coffee and a hot breakfast in the morning prior to some urbex with the family.
This is very strange this cat came walking out of the woods near the mansion and rubbed up against me. I told my son maybe this is a ghost cat because upon visiting the Alton Historic Cemetery just two miles away we came across possibly the same cat below. They both looked alike it was just an odd occurrence. Maybe the same cat is having kittens all over the area and so the felines are very similar looking. But their is always that what if factor too!
