King
Philips Town & Indian Mound
We started hiking down a dirt road with some woods and overgrown pastures
on each side. We came across a gate which was very old and beat up. The
area was almost to quiet as we were marching down a grassy dirt road.
We noticed fences on both sides of us and there was some pastures with
many large trees growing in the middle of them. Some of these pastures
looked very unused and you could tell this was an old farming area. Vines
were growing all over the fences and at times the road was very over grown
and narrow.
At one point I heard a bunch of branches snap heavily turned over and seen
two red eyes. I had to do a double take and it turned out to be a cow. But
still that is enough to really get the adrenaline pumping.
I did not feel at home here something kept bothering me the whole time we
were hiking like a get out type of feeling. The road seemed endless as it
was so dark up ahead like it had no end. At times the trees draped over it
and the little farm house way out across from the pasture became more and
more dim.
We walked for about a mile and at times I heard movement possibly animals
it was a very serene out here perhaps with a lot of wildlife.
We then came on out to a clearing where the road split up in two ways. We
did not take the left passage since we wanted to mainly focus on the
Indian Mound and King Philips Town Location in the woods. We found a
plaque on a wooden board marking the location of the Shell Midden and King
Philips Town.
We went through the brush behind the wood sign and there was this giant
tree with all kinds of flower buds. There it was we were right on top of
the Indian Mound. It was no more then eight feet in height but their
appeared to be a couple rolling little hills right along the bank of the
St. Johns River.
We found laying on top of the mound piles of concrete with metal rusty
piping and something else made of metal crushed by a slab. I am not sure
if this was part of a structure or pier at one time. I found this one rock
behind the mound that extended over the swamp. We also found this one tree
full of thousands of ants on its trunk I almost backed into it.
It was pretty eerie back here and off in the distance I heard something
but not sure what it was. But I do not think for a moment we were alone
here. We climbed down the side of the mound and stood along the flooded
banks of the river. It seemed the river was consuming the area. We saw
lily pads, trees growing in the water, muddy water etc We turned our backs
and started to walk away when something hit the water really hard.
We shined our lights and there was no sign of anything no fish or gator.
So the answer I have is that it was unknown to what caused the noise. But
the timing was perfect at catching us off guard. Most of the Indian mound
is surrounded by water and the noise in the water occurred next to it so
its hard to say.
We saw a trailer out in the middle of the overgrown field so we
investigated it taking the road to the right. There was a really
uncomfortable feeling as it sat in the middle of this field. We had to
hike through some pretty thick grass to get to it.
There was some old wood furniture inside but there was signs nobody had
been in this trailer a very long time. The walls were rotted, their was
giant crab spiders, webs all over the place, a pile of manure in the
middle of the floor and I felt as if something was not in here ghostly but
rather the ghostly were watching us from the outside windows.
I heard something hit the trailer it almost felt like it shook. I also
heard some movement and odd sounds outside the trailer as we were getting
ready to exit. I do believe something was out there moving around and
watching.
Behind the trailer towards the river we seen another structure which
turned out to be a wooden fishing cabin which was quite considerable in
size. We went up onto the porch and the screens were all ripped. There was
no signs that anybody had been here in at least a few years.
There was no way to enter into the cabin but we did look into the windows
and it was very preserved inside. We could see some furniture and such. We
also noticed by the door an old Indian statue which seems to have been put
there to guard the door. I understood it and why it was put there so I
took a photo of it.
The cabin was more like a cottage but it also seemed that the St. Johns
River bank was starting to consume it. There was swamp on the river side
surrounding it and reaching its edge.
We walked around to the kitchen side of the cottage and spotted an office
lamp as well as fancy vase. It was really cozy here and obviously served
those who use to enjoy this place which was a fishing camp.
I walked around the side and started to step into the wet lands. I had to
be real careful cause I am very sure there was some alligators back in
here. The cottage was built into the bank so one end was on stilts.
We then after enough photos started walking into a more woodsy area and
spotted more structures.
There was a twisted metal shed and garage made out of wood and metal. This
was real old and we walked into one of the structures up some wood steps.
We practically walked into a hive of many wasp and bees nest. My head hit
some of them and when we shined the light upwards we seen many wasp in
hibernation just ready to attack. There was also a black window inside
here so yeah not good!
We walked out and I heard owls off in the distance. Along a barbed wire
and broken fence I spotted a metal garage and overgrown animal yard. We
took a few photos of this rusted and twisted pile of debris. It appeared
that it was years since anything of the living walked back in here. The
paint even on the wood fence was cracked, peeling, and felt like rubber.
This area is where we brushed up against sand spur brush and we were
covered by them. If you have not experienced these things lets put it this
way if you try to remove them from your skin or clothing they will prick
your fingers making them bleed.
We walked around the animal pen probably at one time a donkey or horse was
kept in here and I found a hidden road. This road twisted and turned in a
very spread out kind of woods. At times there was swampy areas but for the
most part it was very wide open and we lost the road at times.
Eventually we came out to a pasture and we heard a dog act up way off in
the distance barking like crazy. We were hoping that the dog was on a
leash and was not seeking us out. Then that is when I heard a gun shot.
Jason did not hear it then we heard another. Then eventually three in a
row and a fourth one.
I decided to take another route and back trace rather then run across the
pasture back to the road which we originally came in. We decided not to
talk and kept very quiet for our hike back towards the various structures
along the river.
The dog we no longer heard barking in the distance. I did however heard a
branch crack very loudly near the abandoned trailer. I also heard a new
type of owl maybe it was not. It was apparently that whoever fired the gun
was afraid of what was out here as well.
We made it back to the country road we hiked in on things felt a lot more
unfriendly or different. I felt watched and as if at anytime someone might
come to confront us. But that was not the case we made it back to the car.
But as we got closer to the old gates off to the left of me in a pasture
was these odd bird sounds may have been even bats.
The sounds became worst this was not normal it sounded like a warning
signal as if something was nearby startling the birds. It was way off
towards the woods across the pasture and we were at the car. Jason said
something to me but at the same time he talked I could have sworn I heard
screaming or the sound of a woman off in the distance.
The place was very weird lots of cold spots, movement, screams, branches
breaking, crazed farmers and secluded areas. The one thing that was
different here is that this is one of the only places in Florida I have
visited that had a northern like fauna. There was no palm trees, tropical
plants etc lots of oaks trees back here.
I am not sure what was out there watching but being that this was a
temporary village for the Seminole Indians and King Phillip a famous
Indian chief, a ghost town, and Fishing camp there could be anything back
here. I was very excited that I found the Indian mound since its very well
hidden very few know about this one.
After we peeled out of there a cop on his way to a call came speeding past
me I thought he was going to pull me over for speeding but we got lucky
and so I pulled over near an abandoned airfield. The airfield was now
being used for garbage and we were not able to enter but it was just a
relief being away from King Philips Town and the gun fire. We then visited
our last location of the night which was Fort Lane Park.
