Independence Lake for decades has been thought of as the jewel of the Sierra just 12 miles north of Truckee and the Lake Tahoe area. Honestly when you see its azure crystal clear waters the first thing you think to yourself is how clear the lake is. Its so clear that if you were to swim or boat you might feel like your in the Bahamas due the waters being so pristine. Locals always felt that you had to earn the right to visit this hidden lake and most of the time its quite easy to get lost trying to find it. However, the reward often outweighs the risk of getting lost down many of the old logging roads found within the Tahoe National Forest which surrounds this lake. The lake is nestled between large granite volcanic peaks, lush forest and at the base of the of the Little Truckee River watershed. If I were not to share this place with the public it would be a mistake on my part as this is a beautiful locations meant to be enjoyed by your family, friends and loved ones.

The nature surrounding the lake is quite diverse as a matter in fact its home to one of the two remaining wild self sustaining Lahontan Cutthroat trouts in the world. Wild Lahontan Cutthroat been nearly wiped off the map as they have lost 99% of their historic range. The lake today more or less is a preserve and they will allow you to take boats out onto the lake so you can enjoy the nature which are found within the beautiful pristine shoreles found here. Many other fish also have taken home here since the last ice age when the glaciers melted 10,000 years ago to form the lake. Such fish found here are Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, Mountain Whitefish, Brown Trout, and Kokanee Salmon. Fishing is allowed at the lake however keep in mind most of the fish here are catch and release not all. Being an avid fisherman I sometimes mix up my day seeking Bigfoot while fishing and hiking. Back in the day the fishermen who came to Independence Lake were using dynamite, large nets and bigger traps nearly almost wiping out all the fish. The area was overfished to supply residents of  Virginia and Carson City with trout for the miners and residents.

The wildlife here is amazing home to mountain lions, Black Bear, Truckee-Loyalton Deer, Bald Eagles, Ospreys, mountain yellow-legged frogs, Sierra Nevada Mountain Beavers, Wolverines, Willow Flycatchers and at least over a 150 species of birds. Although keep in mind Wolverines are very rare only or two has been sighted near the lake. Which is what had caught my attention is I read a story about a sighting that transpired here and my first thought was if such a creature can be so elusive perhaps their is a good chance Bigfoot has also been sighted drinking from the lakes cool waters. I have read a few bigfoot tales in the region where someone had seen a 9' tall reddish brown colored bipedal creature and about strange vocalizations often hear in the area. With that being said I think that if your going to hike in the Sierra Nevada's sooner or later you are bound to have a real bigfoot encounter, hear vocalizations or find a track in a location like this. Lakes like these provide all walks of life with fresh drinking water therefore life tends to fully thrive here.

The lake itself is about 2.4 miles long and about a half mile wide residing at about an elevation of 7k. Although their are many other lakes in the region Independance Lake seems to be a much more larger body of water. During the gold rush there was an Irish born actress who would become the Belle of the California Gold Rush named Lola Montez whom at one time was the mistress to King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
She named the lake after Independence Day in 1858 and more then likely stayed here at the hotel to enjoy the regions beauty. Very little has changed here in thousands of years not even the tallest mountain on the west end of the lake whom was named after Lola Montez today known as Mount Lola. Being a part of the Truckee River watershed very few people ever realize that this lake provides clean drinking water for some of the residents of western Nevada.

While the lake served as a resort for recreational outdoors enthusiast in the early 1900's it was also used for logging operations by Hobart Mills later on. In 1937 Nevada Energy known at the time Sierra Pacific Power Company purchased most of the land surrounding the lake including Hobart Estate. Sierra Pacific was mainly in the water business during that time period therefore they used Independence Lake as a water storage facility. Eventually Sierra Pacific would sell its water business and the water rights to the lake went to the Truckee Meadows Water Authority. This would later become useful as during droughts the lake water could be used to supply the residents of Reno Sparks and Truckee Meadows with viable drinking water. Over the years all the way up until the 1970s quite a few people and companies wanted to develop the land around the lake this includes the Disney Corporation.

If you really want to go back to the lakes earlier history it can be mainly traced back to early lumbering in the region. A man by the name of Walter Hobart had started a small lumber mill NE of Lake Tahoe in 1873 he also had invested in milling operations in Franktown's Hobart Reservoir. By 1900 a small town had developed called Hobart Mills a location that really is not that far from Independence Lake. The problem is saloons nor drinking was allowed in town however it was allot less rowdy then per say Truckee. If the lumberjacks wanted entertainment they would have to visit the Red Light Districts or Saloons in Truckee or while some of them prefered a nice day out hiking around Independence Lake. Although the resort is long gone at one time many of the men who worked up at nearby Hobart Mills often came up here to enjoy themselves.  At its peak the town had about 1,500 residents which really is allot of folks considering how remote this area is.

Hobart did not get all the credit however for discovering virgin pine and fir timberlands. Many other notable prominent individuals also ran saw mills and lumber camps in the area. One of those men was William B. Tiffany who operated a lumber mill along the Truckee River not to far from Independence Lake. Sometimes however lumber would run out and such men would move on. In this case William Tiffany was hired by Hobart to survey land lines, measure water sources, document timber forest and buy the land if it was viable. The one quality about Tiffany is he never wrote nothing down but remembered just about everything. He kind of reminds me a bit of how I am when it comes to our paranormal and bigfoot research. More then often Tiffany was sent to buy the land before other timberers had gotten to it first.

Tiffany spent many years exploring this region and adventuring at many of the locations we have done our research at. I am sure not much has changed since the 1800's as these areas are still very lush, green, full of nature, azure waters and old large trees just like Independence Lake. While on his journeys he visited placed like Boca California, Webber Lake, Kyburz, Sagehen Meadows & The Stampede, Prosser Creek, Alder Creek and just south of Sierraville California. All these locations were the site of lumber camps, mills and even at one time a shortline railroad. In total you were talking about over 1.5 billion board feed of lumber. You had to have lumber as many of the small towns in the area at the time needed it for the mines and to construct the townsite. While most lumber was shipped off to Nevada especially in Silver City, Gold Hill and Virginia City Nevada.

Tiffany spent sometime on the shores of Independence Lake and I cant say I blame him. I adore this place not sure what it is but it just feels like home here. I feel like I could spend all day just dipping in the water, fishing, hiking and chasing butterflies. I kind of want others to feel what I feel in my work but at the sametime understand that the history back in this forest contain allot of history. Tiffany more then likely not only came to this lake for timber but perhaps to purchase water rights. If you operated saw mills you had to have flowing water. The water was often used to generate power for the mills but also provide the hardworking lumberers with fresh drinking water.

Hobarts Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company would eventually purchase water rights to Webber and Independence Lake from the Boca Lumber Company. Hobart knew that if he invested in the local water that he could eventually turn it for profit. Upon purchasing water rights at the lake he also bought the resort then leased it to Mrs Clemmons till about 1917 when a Mrs Kenney took over the lease. Many well known prominent individuals would come to Independence Lake to enjoy the resort, fish and boat this includes Hobart Mills Employees. Some lumbering was done around Independence Lake those areas eventually would become big open meadows where grass grew. Therefore the SNW&LC began to lease the land to cattle ranchers and sheep herders. Back in the day the Flanigan brothers were tresspassing on this land in 1897 and were arrested, sheep herd ran off and each brother was fined $15.

Eventually the resort faded away so did lumbering in the region. The only time the lake ever had visitors was from outdoor enthusiast who wanted to hike, fish and boat. Life was returning to the lake back to normal which meant desolations, isolation and very few humans to ever be found back here.  After the lumber boom the area became more reputable for its water as the lake set at a very high elevation therefore when the snow melted it kept this lake fuller then full most of the time. However a new age was dawning the one filled with resorts, ski slopes and outdoor sports. Therefore in the mid 1900's such ski resorts opened up in Squaw Valley, Mt. Shasta and Alpine Meadows.

The Squaw Valley/Shirley Canyon area has allot of Bigfoot lore back in the day when miners resided here they had quite a few sightings. Locations that had timbering or gold mining appeared to have stirred up the creature. One must wonder if the same thing happened with Independence Lake when more folks came up here to work, hike, ski, fish, boat and explore. While in the mid 1900s the area did not get allot of attention it almost became the site of a major Disney Resort within the middle of the Tahoe National Forest.

When Alpine Meadows ski resort was in the works John Reily a treasurer for the company hired a Peter Klaussen to build and operate the resort here. He loved the mountains was an avid skier therefore he moved to Squaw Valley in 1955. The Alpine Meadows resort opened in 1961 and for awhile he ran it but eventually resigned his position to become a development consultant to the ski industry. Klaussen was reporting and developing plans for many ski resorts which include Northstar At Tahoe and the Snowmass Resort near Aspen Colorado. In 1965 Disney Corporation hired Klaussen to study avalanches surrounding the Independence Lake area.  It was important that these ski resorts would be built in safe zones and Disney had allot on the line to lose.

Walt Disney loved to ski and thought how wonderful it would be to build a ski resort in the sierras. He had his eye on Mineral King in Sequoia National Park but then heard about Independence Lake. Disney knew the north side of the lake was fairly flat and would be a wonderful site to build his Disney Village.  Disney hires hif friend and a ski legend Willy Schaeffler to survey the property in the winter which led to the hiring of Norm Wilson and Klaussen who would spent two winters surveying the slopes around Independence Lake especially on Mount Lola which stands at 10k. Klaussen did some skiing around the lake he claimed their was over 2,500' of vertical open slopes to the west while the north provided was more level for Nordic skiing.  Schaeffler and Disney were going to offer a boat taxi to ferry the skiers around the lake. It did not matter where you would ski here all the slopes led down to the lake itself it definitely on its way to becoming a top notch ski resort. If you want to see some models, pictures and portraits of what the Disney Village would have looked like Click Here: Walt Disney Village.

Klaussen would send Disney coolers full of snow via airlines to Orlando Florida's Disney World from Reno NV. It would have been the perfect resort maybe more popular as any in the region and  people would not have had to go through Truckee to even get here since the Lake is only about 8 miles from the highway. Sad to say the dream never came true its not because the Sierra Pacific Land Company did not want to sell Walt Disney the lake shore front property but rather its because he passed away in 1966 so the dream sort of died with him sad to say. What would have happened if this place became a major Disney Resort? Its hard to say I do not think the rare trout found here would have continued to thrive. I think that all those beautiful dirt roads probably would have been paved taking away from that natural cozy forested feeling. People would have came in polluted the area and all the wildlife may have moved on.

This is beside the point that many of the residents of Truckee were in protest or had some environmental activism. Some always felt the residents did not want Truckee to become overcrowded. However I believe a Disney Resort may have brought employment, business and wealth to the area. Lake Tahoe just south of this area is always jam packed in the summer. But if a resort year around was at Independence Lake available to the public it may have provided some relief to areas that are overly crowded. Personally nothing agitates me more then going on a hike and having no room to park because everyone wants to hike on that same trail. Today Independance Lake is a bit more quiet our first hike out here not a soul was around maybe a boater or two other then that we were the kings of this pristine azure wonder!

Allot of people often think of money before they think of natural beauty but when it comes to Independence Lake nature prevailed here. That is what I love about this lake is that it still is very well preserved. If you hike along the shoreline you will find thousands of freshly hatched trout they cant be no bigger then a quarter inch swimming along the shoreline. Today the area is just that a preserve meant to harbor wildlife found within the lake and along the shores. In the winter you cant get back here we tried just watch our first video as we attempt to offroad through snow and mud. However, I came back in mid summer and the roads were clear just a forewarning to those who might want to visit here. Disney knew that if a ski resort went in here they would have to build roads and infrastructure to draw others on in. Otherwise, you could not get back here really the lake is in the wilderness you wont hear a single vehicle back here when hiking and its so quiet you can hear a pin drop literally.

With that being said make a donation to preserve we did and you should too. For 150 plus years not much has changed here the lumberers were swimming here, prominent guest boated on the lake and today people are still exploring its shoreline. This is a special place untouched by fires and barely touched by man except for a few historic remants. Its so important to share these places with the public so they can understand what needs to be done to preserve these places and appreciate them for what they truly are. If the apocalypse every occurred one of my choices to survive in it would be to have a nice little hut with smoking fish and live in seclusion here away from the chaos. Some might say hey this guy is crazy but if I had to relive my primitive roots this place would be the place to do it! We hope by sharing this jewel with the rest of the world they also feel the same way! Today the Truckee Donner Land Trust owns the entire 2000 acre area surrounding the lake you can donate to help them maintain the area so that it stays preserved for years to come.
