Some of you may wonder why we included Franktown in this addition to our site. There was upper Franktown and lower. The lower portion of the town was very lucrative ranches at the base of the sierras in Washoe Valley. The upper portion is from the Hobart Reservoir all the way to down to where the Franktown Creek reaches the valley floor thus allowing the land to be fertile.

While upper Franktown did heavy lumbering for example check out our ghost of a sawmill photos the lower portion was full of ranches. Many of them today are gated or hidden far back in the woods of the lower Carson Range. While the Hobart, Redhouse, Ghost of a Sawmill and the photos you see in these updates were part of upper Franktown this page is more of what you would see if you visited the main town site today which is full of ranches and grazing cattle.

Not much remains of the town but at one time hundreds of sawmills were operating along Franktown Creek and high up in the Carson Range where timbering led to logs being transported via flume to Washoe Valley where it could be shipped to the railroad to reach the Comstock Lode of Virginia City.

One of the LAST historical landmarks remaining is the cemetery today Will Sauer Road which is gated by about 4 to 6 residents and that is the only way to visit it. Sadly I do not agree with the cemetery being hidden as it dates back to 1870 and has lumberman who probably once lumbered the hillsides surrounding the Hobart Reservoir which ties into this current project.  It has some of the early ranchers of Franktown buried here sadly I cant get to it due to many new homes built around it unless they give me gate access.

Even though I am a ghostbuster I am also a preservationist therefore its important to visit as many sites as I can so we can help educate the public a little more with photos/media. It is very relevant to document the cemetery even its condition as it helps the county preserve such sites or even restore some of them so yes we do have to get back here if someone can assist us.

I want to know if the women who died when the Hobart dam broke are buried here? What about some of those who were involved with the construction of the saw mill sites, lumberers and early pioneers of Franktown? Maybe some who were buried here were the first ranchers who came to Washoe Valley while others may have been involved with the design of Marlette Lake and the Hobart Reservoir! I just have to see it with my eyes it makes it easier for me to make a personal connection with each location we work with if that makes sense.

There was also a quartz mill it employed hundreds many of them from Franktown today the mill site has been eradicated cannot even find one simple sign of its existence. Today Franktown has been absorbed by many wealthy estates although some of the older ranches remain handed over from one generation to the next the town has been lost. The iron pipes, abandoned saw mills, old barns and the cemetery are all signs that at one time this community thrived just miles from Carson City Nevada!

While in most of our clips you seen upper Franktown lower Franktown below the Hobart at the base of the sierras was very fertile thus many ranchers grew crops for the Comstock while other townsmen worked at the saw mills in the canyons above. This is a short drive through franktown with some photos today not much remains but a few old ranches, barns and the cemetery which the road on into it has been gated by local residents denying us of this historic landmark and last remaining connections to the lumber &  ranching town itself so it was a bit of a disappointment but at the same time we did get to see some of the beauty that resides surrounding where the town once resided.
