In the mid 1800s the Mizell family purchased land on the south shores of Lake Rowena. This became the home of one of Orange Counties first sheriffs and one of the most popular historical sites in Orlando today.

Harry P. Leu Gardens is roughly fifty acres of peaceful grounds. People who visit here can tour the mystical forest of ancient oaks, camellias or even visit the Leu House Museum which is a restored nineteenth century farmhouse on the property. The gardens are home to the largest camellia collection in the eastern side of North America which has over 2000 specimens. From October through March they are at their peak here in Florida which we were able to enjoy on our first investigation.

The rose garden which is the largest formal rose garden in the state of Florida has over 1200 roses and 250 different varieties. There is also a herb and butterfly garden, a floral clock, a xerophyte garden, white garden, bamboo garden, palms garden, cycads and so much more. Then there is the tropical stream garden which has many exotic plants.

One can walk on the meandering paths to various areas amongst the 200 year old oaks and feel captivated by its beautify and dismal atmosphere as gardens are presents throughout the entire estate.

The gardens were the creation of the late Harry P. Leu and his wife Mary Jane who acquired the property and home in 1936. The farmhouse was built in 1898 which was an add on of the Mizell family house and turned into a rich man's estate.

Harry P. Leu was a local wealthy businessman and a Florida Native. His wife and him traveled the world to collect specimens of exotic plants for their garden. The Leu's did reside on the grounds till about 1961 until they became quite elderly and donated the estate to the city of Orlando. The only condition that was made is that their home and gardens would be made available for the public to enjoy.

Originally years ago the grounds were a drive-through garden which eventually turned into numerous foot trails, benches, a gazebo have been added so you can enjoy a much more in depth stroll.

This maybe one of the most purest haunted places I have ever visited. Its almost so pure its untouched by the sin of man. There is no trash, pollution, tragic happenings etc here. It was at one time the farming estate of the Mizell family and of course within the gardens is the cemetery which is draped with moss and many weathered stones.

One could walk along the eerie Lake Rowena or take a stroll in the vegetable garden. This is a very beautiful place and based on our investigation we are very sure that the Mizell family resided on this land and perhaps never left.
