Subject: My Fathers Day Adventures In Gold Country On 6-18-16

After leaving St. Stephens Cemetery in Drytown we were approaching sunset. It had been a long day and I still had this fairly large semi ghost town left to explore. The problem is Highway 49 runs right through the middle of town so you have to be careful because their is a ton of traffic on the road.
 
My first stop would be at the old fire department out front they had some relics of the past including an air tank, water tank, bell and some wagon wheels. Fires were not uncommon in Drytown there were quite a few actually. Their was a couple small plaques one stated that the one bell belonged to some school but I also think it sat at the old fire department to at one time.
 
I walked across the street to visit the old well to the right of it was the old general store with iron doors that said antiques. Of course back in the day it had multiple uses but mainly just a store. To the left of that was a small little restaurant. The buildings downtown are well preserved all made of wood and renovated so nothing is abandoned.
 
My favorite building is the old hotel it has an upper balcony ya know the type you see in the movies where the bad guy is on it and gets shot falling from the top of it. Most of the buildings though are antique shops which were stores and shops back in the 1800's. Hell the old fire department was turned into a small antique shop to.
 
I did visit the old butcher shop I think someone is living there but the grass was high, junk was stacked all over outside and its sort of an eyesore. The butcher shop is nearly original to the town and although it looks the same its getting to a point where its deplorable in comparison to the other renovated structures around town.
 
If you head out of town there is also a small red school house. Today its abandoned the windows are to high to jump in or hold my cam up to get photos. But out back there was a tree swing and to the left of the school a bbq pit. The school nearly was in operation for over a century. I felt something hit me at the school out of the trees maybe an acorn or pine cone hard to know. For all I know something could have touched me because that is how it felt at the time. It just was very weird but since there are trees I just assumed a squirrel maybe knocked something onto me.
 
There was an old restored home that sat further back I photographed. As a matter in fact there are quite a few older homes if you drive around or walk the side streets. I only really focused on the historic sites downtown simply because it was almost dark and me taking photos of peoples residences almost at night may make others uncomfortable so I did not do it sorry folks.
 
In total I think just walking around a short time I found about six antique shops and that is all you see here when it comes to local business. There is the old well restaurant and speaking of the old well its filled in but at the bottom I seen charred wood so someone was burning a fire from this well at one time.
 
I was walking past this one structure there was an older woman sitting outside. I guess its an old brick building turned into apartments. But she told me how to get to the old jail if I was interested and sure enough there it was. The old jail still had bars on the windows but no door and someone had been using it to store landscaping materials. But more then likely it was used as a drunk tank but no major outlaws.
 
There was this wall with a bunch of old rusty relics also hanging up on it. Also if you leave or enter town there is a pond not far from the town plaque which is in fairly bad shape. Allot of flowers were in bloom and shrubs also. Its real nice in Drytown so much nature if you take a time out to recognize it. Flowers grow at street corners and there are small horse properties with lush green grass. Its just a lovely place to be and even the creek was flowing.
 
As it was getting the dark the full moon came out it was a gorgeous night but we had a long ways to go home but I could not ask more on this perfect Fathers Day. I bet some of the old shops are haunted both cemeteries have quite a few graves unfortunately I tried and you cant get to the pioneer cemetery its on private land.
 
Its a bustling little town well sort of quite a bit of traffic which made it hard for me to take EVP or film. But it was a nice finish to a days worth of adventures. Back when I lived up this way id go through Drytown at least a couple times a week and always use to wonder what was all here. But there is more to Main Street like with the old jail we found. I believe there is more to see up here especially if we can see the old pioneer cemetery.
 
I am amazed with how great of shape the buildings are in considering the age of this hamlet. But at one time there use to be more till the fires swept through. I went through some alleys and behind some of these businesses and I have to admit downtown is much different then what the tourist do not see. For example behind one of the structures the grass was real high, junk all over etc
 
We set on off to head for home I had an awesome fathers day dinner which included a T-bone steak, garlicky mashed potatoes and broccoli with cheese sauce. Nothing like a homecooked meal after a long days of exploring. Kind of makes it all worthwhile when you think about it!

Supposedly near this old well and parking lot was where the heart of the Rancheria Massacre Occurred. Some of the structures where the deaths occurred in front of are long gone hence the parking lot next to well but it does not change what happened here. Then to our left you had a general store which still stands today and you can see the photo of it. Three men were murdered inside of the store while the forth man crawled out due to having his legs mutilated and died hours later.  I have done research and from what I concluded is that the massacre seemed to occur very close to old well. Today the well is filled in and someone apparently had thrown some wood at the bottom lighting it on fire.

The black and white photo above shows the butcher shop. You can clearly see on a wood beam pieces of meat hanging from it. The butcher shop had marble floors, counterys and even the block all cut from the Fiddletown Quarry and opened in the 1860's. The structure still fairly looks the same today although the awning which hung over the front is long gone. The porch had two brick archways I heard instead of wood or glass doors it had iron doors. The inside walls were covered in plaster which is now crumbling away today. Johann Heinrich Meiss served in the Prussian Army during Napoleons first conquest of Europe and came to Drytown in or around 1852. He established the first butcher shop in the area in 1854 and I believe he also established this one which was a more permanent structure. He did die in 1865 so more then likely the butcher shop ended up with another owner. I took a photo of the old butcher shop below so you can compare photos. While we may run a paranormal group we equally care much about the history and the preservation of these locations we do research at. 
The full moon over Drytown as I was heading on out at dusk. Nothing has changed the pioneers who first came to this place would have experienced many full moons just like this one. Drytown was a dark place in the mid 1800's their were no nearby cities and by nightfall most families were indoors sitting around a cozy fire.
Photos taken inside the old jail cells and I would not have found this place except for the fact that a local seen me filming then told me to walk out back if I wanted to see them. So we did just that and the two things I found out back was an old stone wall then the jail itself. It looks like people are just throwing landscaping materials inside of it but when it was being used it probably more then anything served as the drunk tank for unruly brawlers. Afterall Drytown had a couple dozen saloons so yeah drinking did occur but so did altercations!

My fathers day dinner a meal fit for a king a T-bone steak fully marinated, tender and juicy. Along with that garlic herb mashed potatoes and cheesy broccoli! It was a late night and a late dinner but it was worth waiting to come home to a dinner like this after a hard days of adventuring up in gold country!
