The
Devil's Millhopper
I went into an empty parking lot parking next to the only vehicle kind of
odd I know didn't want to stand out parking tickets and getting towed I
think I can do without right now lol. We started our hike off to the
Millhopper and we were pretty excited about this place. The reason for
excitement was that I spent awhile talking about this place to the guys
this is a place I wanted to visit 3 years ago and never had anybody to
venture to it with me.
Its a place with stories, myths, lore, energy and even horror stories. We
made our way further back down a dark road which led us to a patch of
woods. We made our way to the ranger station it was all lit up and their
was brochures, historical read ups, maps, etc the station felt eerie with
the light on it and the chair with the jacket on the back of it.
Andrew told me that maybe I am a schitzo cause whatever we do or where
ever we go I tell him scenarios of what can happen and why lol. Trust me
on this I see a cop staring at us Ill tell him now here is why he can pull
us over etc you do enough adventures you start to know that its obvious a
green haired guy does not belong here lol. But Andrew was worried about
this place being lit and it was the opposite with me of course I did not
tell the guys what laid ahead which would be a descent into complete
darkness.
We made our way down a trail and to our right was a giant drop off filled
with trees growing in the ravine, sounds of water rushing, and pitch
darkness. We read a little historical plaque took a photo of a memorial
stone then we took the 225 steps to the bottom. We made are way about 120
feet down in a 500 foot bowl across.
My main interest remained with the cave which I wanted to find at the
bottom of this pit. I seen quite a few rock formations throughout the
bottom of the sink hole of course this just shows others that underneath
the land we reside on is a whole series of limestone tunnels that are
filled with water flowing threw them.
I found a cave and climbed over the railings dropping down. I mean this is
a place that needs to be enjoyed close up not from a wooden boardwalk. The
cave had water rushing in it and I climbed into the hole. It opened up to
a cavern not very large but I stood up and in parts of it I did get
soaked. Eventually Andrew came to see the cave he says boo I see you cause
I was hiding all the way in the back of it looking into another hole which
dead ended.
The cave was not large but like I said this is the real deal this place is
ancient like most places we visit. The guys went to sit up on an
observation deck they smoked up I had another little mission in mind. I
want to explore other parts of the sink hole which was risky but I wanted
to find another cave to explore.
I climbed and this time dropped further down losing site of the guys. I
found what appeared to be streams at the bottom of the sinkhole I did not
walk in them cause they had sandy bottoms which mean soft ground. Of
course little did that help me cause I was walking on solid ground until
one of my boots went over a foot deep in solid soft ground. I got a little
nervous I thought oh boy the sink hole is sinking further lol. I mean what
else do you think when all of sudden your legs go down into a deep hole.
My boot was covered in mud was not mad just surprised at the terrain in
the sink hole. Like the bottom edges all had giant rock formations but
then streams flowed around the rocks and on the bottom. One of the streams
went into this hole just disappearing into the bowels of the earth. A few
trees grew at the bottom of the sink hole but mainly just grass. I did not
check it all out but I did see enough to understand how its got its name.
I was not also happy with being down at the bottom alone cause something
was in the sink hole with me and it was big it was moving around. I
honestly am not sure what was down their with me but the movement was
something very large so I knew I was not alone maybe something was hiding
down in here on one of the steep walls of the sink hole but it was
close.
I climbed the rails it was about 7 feet up and found the guys around the
corner on a deck we smoked one after that I needed it the place has a
dismal feeling around it. I get bad vibes and then I get regular energy
vibes. Something bad has happened here and more then on one occasion. The
site just allows us to collect data as to what over time so I cannot wait
to get this up.
We made our way back up the stairs it was a hard climb lets face it we all
get old I ran the stairs to the top but I could feel the blood in my legs
flowing these stairs go fairly steep to the top 225 to be exact which is
about the height of a 10 to 12 story hotel to give some an idea. We made
it up and we felt pretty accomplished not an easy place when you put it
all together.
We left got to the parking lot the other car was gone I thought hmmmm but
a place so long talked about at my meet ups has now been conquered and
your going to enjoy the history to it to when It comes out on our site. We
then moved onto Newnansville Ghosttown Cemetery.
