Delamar Nevada is a remote ghost town in the Pahranagat Valley area that may have been one of the most tragic mining towns in all of the wild west. It also was one of the largest ghost towns on the west coast made of native stone found in the area. At one time the town had anywhere from 1500 to 3000 residents. It had a hospital, opera house, churches, school, saloons, post office and many other businesses. I call this ghost town the city of stone as today this is all that remains are many stone walls spread throughout a mile or two.

In the mid 1890's Captain Joseph Rafael De La Mar purchased a mine in the Ferguson Camp area. He was very wealthy so he also bought some of the other claims and funded an expansion project. It would not take very long for the camp to grow very wealthy thus a city would be born one that would meet a tragic fate. Although the town experienced many tragedies it would not become a ghost town till the 1940's thus it did thrive for almost 50 years in seclusion.

Many of the mines and mills were built right next to the homes of the miners and the miners families. The residents had children and pets thus the risk involved at the time were not recognized as they are in today's mining. Water was scarce and the crusher in town ran dry which created a fine dust that contained silica. When the men inhaled this dust it caused silicosis and eventually death. Only one house in Delamar had a well where water could be tapped meanwhile water had to be brought in to the other houses.  Sadly a few hundred men who worked at these mills and mines perished leaving widows behind thus the town was called "The Widow Maker" or rather "Maker Of Widows". It was rumored that the town was home to nearly 400 widows.

If you really want to get technical they called this dust dagger dust due to the fact that it caused microscopic tears in the alveoli sacs within the lungs causing suffocation. In simple terms it created a very rapid form of emphysema resulting in suffocation within months. The gold was found in quartzite which contained many sharp rock particles which were thrown into the air due to Delamar's dry mining process.

One of the first residents to settle in the area was an Agnes Horn who lived in Delamar since a child. Her husband developed Silicosis and died. She planted a rose bush by his grave and eventually was the last settler in Delamar who was buried under that very same rose bush. It is stories like these which really reach out to the hearts of explorers like me which was all the more reason to tour the area and try to understand that at one time these people lived as you and I. Little did they know that leaving a poverty stricken town like Pioche they would end up also trading in there lives. You can see the Horn grave by visiting
Delamar Cemetery.

Life was harsh for the residents of Delamar although it was a very advanced city water that was not brought in from the local well had to be pumped from another well in Meadow Valley which was about 12 miles away. Supplies and materials were also brought in by railroad all the way from Utah almost 150 miles away.   Despite the harshness some decided to stay in Delamar while others in 1902 decided to move onto Tonapah. Then by 1909 Captain Delamar dismantled his mining operation leaving the town at somewhat of a standstill. From 1909 to 1929 mining had ceased due to the fact gold production was down. In 1929 the production began reopening the post office and school. Only then five years later would the town die again only this time for good.

Today harsh weather and vandals have pretty much decimated the entire town. Many have hauled out the rocks that were put into place to house Delamar's residents and businesses. The old saloon has graffiti and hundreds of names carved into its stone walls. The graveyard which should have hundreds of marked burials only has a few stones remaining all the rest are unmarked burials. Wild horses run free in the Delamar hills while the honeycomb of tunnels and mine shafts have been blasted shut. One of the only safer mines left in the area is the Magnolia Mine which was one of the first mines to be mined in this region and is one of the last remaining mines left for adventurers such as us to explore.  Miles down the road are corrals where at one time horses grazed within its fences of grassy springs. Those same horses were used to transport gold and supplies in n out of Delamar by stage coach.

Delamar was also known for having its own currency in fact they used aluminum coins as a form of payment. This was done due to the fact many robberies were taking place when shipping gold and silver. Sadly the coins were useless to robbers and even miners. The government had to intervene and prevent this practice. Just as in Delamar they found a way to not have to pay a bullion tax by forming a separate company to mill the ores charging them higher rates so that most of the profits of the mine itself were used up. The government could not put a stop to this as in Delamar that profit would come with a price.

Although dry mining was done in Delamar in the later 1800's most of the death that occurred here occurred here from 1895 to 1905. A safer form of mining was put into place in Delamar which was the opening of a cyanide plant. The first plant was constructed in Silver City near where we are based today. However around that same time that plant was opened a much larger one was constructed in Delamar and eventually a second large one was also added to this mining community.  It would be used to treat raw pulverized ore which could be put into leaching vats. The Griffin Mills within Delamar would grind the ore then it would be processed in cyanide. At one time quite briefly Delamar boasted the only operable Cyanide plant although that would not last long as many other mills developed this technique.

Over time new forms of mining could come into play surrounding Delamar nonetheless they were just as deadly. If the glass like particles could be kept down so would the amount of miner deaths within the town; however this new form of mining which was designed to keep up with the demand for milling would just increase the risk.  Let me explain the 400 ton mill in order to operate needed a higher demand for water as the many attempts to drill deeper failed. When drilling was done you had to mix in water if you didn't the drill bits would over heat melting, breaking or dulling. A water line was built 12 miles away 1500 feet below Delamar where forty gallons a minute could supply the town which was inadequate for all the towns mills thus the dust cloud which loomed over Delamar only worsened.

In the spring of 1900 a fire burnt half of the town down I read somewhere people died from this tragedy and most of the town was not rebuilt.  Delamar seen the demise of the town when he pulled out this investment it only took a year later in 1903 for a new 400 ton mill to be built so that Delamar could match Goldfield and Tonapahs mining industry.  As when one mill or mine shut down a new one was built so the dust in the air never really ceased during the towns existence.

When the mining stopped many of the men here were deceased leaving only the women and children within Delamar to live out there lives in these hills alone which leaves a really sad feeling when you walk amongst the ruins. Today one of the greatest buildings on site is the old miners union hall which sits on a hill.  Just as many of the small stone cabins miners lived in all that remains are its walls which stand a few feet high while more prominent places such as the old saloon has walls as high as 15 feet as the sunset cast its shadows on the hillside.  Its hard to believe when you look at the black and white photographs that all that remains today are some stone walls and piles of debris.

For me Delamar was more then just a ghost town it was a goal for me to visit this location for many years. The views here are breathtaking and so is the history that surrounds this area is truly tragic. I do believe the town is haunted although I do not believe all the fish tales either that I have read. Some adventurers have said they feel evil here or feelings of being watched. While one biker claimed that an unseen force grabbed him throwing him off his dirt bike.  I have read people have feelings of not being welcomed while some have rocks thrown at them. Others report seeing a miners ghost wandering the old Delamar Cemetery while others report hearing strange sounds surrounding this cities stone walls.

I wish I could agree with others who have visited the town site stating that this place is evil or terribly haunted in fact its the opposite. I know for a fact that this town has its ghost but at night I spent sometime alone wandering its foundations and it was rather peaceful here. More or less I think that this location is a wonderful location to have a picnic at and some great photography. One thing is for sure Delamar NV is a fascinating place and despite very little remains today history states that from 1895 to 1900 it was the most productive mining operation in NV which came with a bigger price and that would be "Death" and "Sacrifice".
