Death Valley Underground City

DEATH VALLEY UNDERGROUND CITY?

Several years ago, two men - Jack and Bill (surnames 
unknown) - were exploring in Death Valley, near Wingate 
Pass, when one of them fell through the bottom of an old 
mine shaft.

They claimed to have found themselves in a natural 
underground cavern which they followed about 20 miles 
northward into the heart of the Panamint Mountains. 

“To our amazement,” they reported, “we found ourselves in 
a huge, ancient, underground cave city. 

“As we explored, we came upon several perfectly preserved 
'mummies' They wore thick arm bands, and had gold spears. 

“The place seemed to have been abandoned for ages, except 
for the mummies. The entire underground system looked 
very ancient. 

“It was apparently once lit by an ingenious system of 
lights fed by subterranean gases.

“In one spot was a polished round table. The thought 
crossed our minds that it may have been part of an 
ancient council chamber. 

“There were also large statues of solid gold. And stone 
vaults and drawers full of gold bars and all sorts of 
gemstones.

“We were intrigued by some heavy stone wheelbarrows. They 
were so perfectly balanced and scientifically-constructed 
that even a child could use them.

The men reported that throughout the city were huge stone 
doors which were almost perfectly balanced by counter- 
weights.

They followed the caverns upwards to a higher level. The 
caverns ultimately opened out onto the face of the 
Panamint Mountains, about half-way up the eastern slope. 

HIGH WATER OVER MOUNTAINS?

There were a few exits in the form of tunnel-like quays. 

It appeared obvious that the valley below was once under 
water. After some thought, they concluded that the arched 
openings were ancient 'docks' for sea vessels. 

Far below in the valley, they could pick out Furnace Creek 
Ranch and Wash.

The explorers brought out with them some of the treasure 
and tried to set up a deal with certain people, including 
scientists associated with the Smithsonian Institute. The 
idea was to gain help to explore and publicize the city 
as one of the 'wonders of the world'. 

However, to their bitter disappointment, a 'friend' stole 
the treasure (which was also the evidence). 

And worse, they were rejected and scoffed at by the 
scientists when they went to show them the 'mine' 
entrance and could not find it. It appeared that a recent 
cloud-burst had altered the entire landscape. It did not 
look like it had been before.

When Bill and Jack were last seen, they were preparing to 
climb the east face of the Panamints to locate the 
ancient tunnel openings or quays high up the side of the 
steep slope. 

But they were not seen again. 

DOCTOR GIVES SIMILAR REPORT

In 1946 a retired physician by the name of F. Bruce 
Russell told a similar story. 

He claimed to have discovered strange underground rooms 
in the Death Valley area in 1931. He spoke of a large 
room with several tunnels leading off in different 
directions. 

One of these tunnels led to another large room. It 
contained three mummies. 

He identified artifacts in the room as similar in design 
to a combination of Egyptian and American Indian. 

GIANT MUMMIES

What struck him most about the mummies though was their 
size - more than eight feet tall.

Dr. Russell and a group of investors launched "Amazing 
Explorations, Inc" to handle the release, and profit, 
from this find. 

But, Russell vanished. And although he had personally 
taken his friends there, they were never able to find the 
caverns and tunnels again. 

The desert can be very deceiving to anyone not used to 
traveling it. 

Months later, Russell's car was found abandoned, with a 
burst radiator, in a remote area of Death Valley. His 
suitcase was still in the car. 

Does Death Valley hide an underground civilization?

Another old mystery of ancient civilizations is unsolved in Death Valley, which may conceal an underground city that was described in Paihute Indian legend. The city apparently was first described 68 years ago, in Bourke Lee's book, "Death Valley Men."

The book recounts that tale of two Death Valley men (identified as Bill and Jack) who said they'd discovered the remains of an ancient civilization after falling through the bottom of an old mine shaft near Wingate Pass.

They described an underground cavern that they followed for 20 miles into the bowels of the Panamint Mountains. They claimed to have discovered preserved mummies in what appeared to be an underground city.

The mummies wore armbands, and were holding golden spears. Included in other artifacts they described were giant statues; a large roundtable; gold bars and gemstones; perfectly balanced stone wheelbarrows; and huge, counterweighted stone doors.

The source of light for the underground city, they discovered, was an ingenious system fueled by subterranean gases. As they followed the tunnels and caverns upward toward the eastern slope of the mountains, they speculated that the ancient city (like Death Valley) likely was underwater centuries ago, which might explain the arched structures that appeared to be quays that they thought were docks for vessels.

Lee reports in his book that the two explorers retrieved some of the treasures from the site, and attempted to market them to scientists they thought were associated with the Smithsonian Institution. But the artifacts were stolen and the men were never able to find the caverns again. Lee never heard from Bill and Jack again.

In 1946, more than a decade after Lee wrote of the Death Valley tale, Dr. F Bruce Russell claimed to have found a similar underground civilization beneath Death Valley in 1931, the year before Lee's book was published. He also reported finding eight-foot-tall mummies beneath the mountains, and described artifacts of Egyptian and American Indian design.

Dr. Russell and a group of investors reportedly formed an enterprise they called "Amazing Explorations, Inc." to profit from artifacts they found in the caverns. Russell and his colleagues also couldn't find the entranced to the caverns again, and soon thereafter, his car was found broken down and abandoned in Death Valley. Russell's suitcase was in the car, but he was never found.

Are there remains of an ancient civilization, or an Atlantis, under Death Valley? Until modern explorers or prospectors stumble onto the caverns again, we may never know.

Local Indian legends speak of a tunnel that runs beneath the desert. (Note: The book "Death Valley Men," tells the story of 3 people who are supposed to have found an underground city connected with this tunnel, and who actually took treasures from it. The entrance to the Death Valley Tunnel is in the Panamint Mountains down on the lower edge of the range near Wingate Pass, in the bottom of an old abandoned shaft. The bottom of the shaft is collapsed, opening an entrance into a large tunnel system containing much treasure. These tunnels connect with the surface also through arches (like large windows) in the side of the mountain and they look down on Death Valley. They're high above the valley now, but they were once on the edge of the water, and were accessed by boats. The "windows" in the Death Valley side of the Panamint Mountains are about 4,500-5,000 feet above the bottom of Death Valley, and are across from Furnace Creek Ranch. From these openings you can see the green of the ranch below you and Furnace Creek Wash across the valley. (So, with high-powered binoculars or a telescope, you should be able to see the openings from the Furnace Creek Ranch, or Wash.) You can drive down Emigrant Canyon towards Death Valley. You can then park beside the road between Furnace Creek Ranch and the Salt Bed. (From here, the windows should be visible through binoculars.) Indian legends of the Paiutes Indians speak of the people who used to live in the Panamint's caverns.

Perhaps Death Valley’s name is what gives the land its sinister, otherworldly reputation.  Certainly, the subzero elevation, the searing heat, and the moonscape panoramas also lend themselves to the atmosphere of mystery that surrounds the park.

And of course there are the legends. Tales tell of rotting wagons and gingham dress-clad skeletons half-buried in the shifting sands, of the fabulously rich Lost Gunsight Mine and Breyfogle’s elusive gold vein, and of Death Valley Scotty’s outlandish adventures.

A more macabre mythology has taken hold, too, in the wake of serial killer Charles Manson’s capture here in 1969. Manson retreated to Death Valley with his gang of killer flower children after two bloody nights of slaughter that he hoped would set off a cataclysmic race war. An adherent of a variety of occult doctrines, Manson somehow believed that Devil’s Hole, a deep, water-filled cavern on Death Valley’s Nevada side, was the portal to an underground world where he and his followers could wait out the apocalypse, re-emerging as leaders of a purified world. But he was arrested before he could figure out how to get his band through several hundred feet of hot, salty water that had drowned two skin divers just a few years earlier.

Manson may have learned of the underground world from the story of Tom Wilson, a Cahroc Indian who was a Death Valley guide in the 1920s. Wilson said that when he was a boy, his grandfather told him that he had found a tunnel that extended for miles beneath the valley. Walking its length, the man ended up in an underground chamber where a race of fair-skinned people dwelt.  

Welcomed by these subterranean humanoids, Wilson’s grandfather lived with them for a while. The people spoke a strange foreign language, wore clothes made of a leather-like substance, and illuminated their home with a pale greenish-yellow light of unknown origin.

The Indian eventually resurfaced and returned to his people, who were understandably skeptical about his adventure. But Tom Wilson believed that the old man hadn’t lied, and he spent the rest of his life searching for the entry to this underground world, convinced until his death in 1968 that it actually existed somewhere underneath Death Valley.

At one point Wilson teamed up with a prospector named White, who claimed that he too had found strange underground dwellings in Death Valley. White had been exploring an abandoned mine in Wingate Pass when he fell into a hidden tunnel that led to a series of rooms.

The rooms were filled with leather-clad human mummies. Gold bars and other fabulous treasures were stacked in piles around them. There was a passageway leading beyond the rooms as well, lit by an eerie greenish-yellow light. But White dared not explore any further, fearful of what might lie beyond.

White visited the rooms three more times, once with his wife and once with another prospector. But he was unable to locate the cavern later when accompanied by Wilson and a group of archeologists, although they did find a curious dead-end tunnel into the solid rock. The area around Wingate Pass was eventually absorbed into the China Lake Naval Weapons Center, and is now closed to the public.

But other mystery sites in Death Valley are still accessible to the public:

One is the Amargosa Mountains (in the SE corner of Death Valley). Years ago, a desert rat was driving through this range in his Jeep when he came to a group of boulders blocking the road. He parked his vehicle, found a narrow pass between the rocks and walked down into a sandy valley, where he saw about 30 wooden buildings half-covered by sand dunes.

Too big and elaborate to be miners’ shacks, the structures were laid out like a planned community. The explorer went inside some of them and found wooden tables set for meals, brass candlesticks, scraps of cloth, and even an empty picture frame on the wall. There were no human remains, and no signs of violence or natural disaster.

No ghost towns were known to exist in these arid mountains, and no records of permanent settlements in the area have been found. Whether the unnamed explorer had really located a lost community, or was just spinning a tall tale, has never been determined.  ­­–MM
