This is the entrance to the Bennettville and Tioga mining district.  It also borders Yosemite which is some of the most beautiful country in the United States. It was the miners who built route 120 which is known as Tioga pass to bring in supplies to this town site which existed between 1880 to about 1890. This is where the pavement ends and the adventure begins!
The trail that leads into Bennettville is slightly rugged at times we lost it and just followed the creek. In this video when we reach the top of the hill we are rewarded with this lovely waterfalls. It is hard to believe that at one time a mining town existed considering how much snow they get up here and how secluded of an area it is.

All that remains of the town is this Assay and Bunkhouse structure which was restored in 1993. Beyond the town the Tioga mine and some of the old equipment lays scattered surrounding the town site. The views are gorgeous as snow capped peaks surround the entire town site.
In order to reach the Tioga mine we would have to find a way to cross the creek which for this time of year moves along in some spots rather quickly. The old mining road sits above the debris pile. We are currently hiking above the town as we go off into the woods making our way over to a site that was built on a dream.

Today the Tioga Mine remains sealed filled with water and old ties left behind from the mine cart tracks. The tunnel was dug nearly 2000' deep into the granite of the sierra crest in hopes of discovering the best silver ore. Despite the 8 tons of equipment brought in when the mines closed most of it was sealed away inside when no riches were discovered thus causing Bennettville to become a ghost town.  Other attempts were made to mine this tunnel and everytime it resulted in failure.
This is just a short clip of a beaver playing in the snow up near the Tioga Mine. He is a bit far from home considering a few hundred feet away are wet lands including a Beaver Dam we discovered later hiking back into the ghost town. I am sorry that the clip is not very long as I decided to photograph the Beaver rather then film him for our website.

As we made our way back into the ghost town we had to cross an area where their were some wet logs. This spelled a recipe for disaster as the logs were very slick and I ended up falling into the icy cold rapids the camera goes completely under water and I lose allot of my gear as I become completely submerged. This would end any further videos or photography of Bennettville and a very hard lesson learned. In a way it turned out to be our winning blooper as every year on my birthday something like this always happens.  Part of being a paranormal investigator is also having to make sacrifices even if you are it!
