 The first interment within this cemetery was a man by the name of Stephen Goodrich which was in Nov. of 1850. A majority of the graves found here are early pioneers who were Protestant and Methodist. Although I read somewhere their are a few public burials here as well which is very evident as you have prominent gravesites while other are very poor and crumbling.

It does appear that the Methodist and Catholic Church are both one of the same although I might be wrong. But after going to two different sites they show the same church so maybe they both were used for services of Catholicism and Methodist theological worship. The church and cemetery would serve the people of Volcano California who were mining Soldiers Gulch which created a major boom in the towns growth so you needed a place to bury the dead. Do not get this cemetery confused with the Volcano Catholic Cemetery which resides adjacent from this burial ground.

The dedication ceremony for the church took place July 11th of 1852 by a reverend Fish and presiding elder Owen attending.  At the time the church need to raise  $200 to clear its date which by July 22nd the Methodist religion was so sparse that they reached their goal. The church was built of pine poles and clapboards with plank seats on the inside. It was a nice church where many of the towns folk gathered just outside of the very gates of this cemetery.

In 2008 I did visit the cemetery I did not take photos but was amazed at how large and historically beautiful it is. Some of the graves are in peril but it has all the elements of a perfect cemetery in gold country on a hill full of daffodils, large shady trees and beautiful rusty wrought iron work. When many of the burials were taking place here Thomas Jefferson was our president! Religion was very important to the people of Volcano sure the town had its fair share of sin but this was a working class one that valued god and when their lives came to an end after a funeral they were brought right over to the cemetery across the road.  

The church was fairly small perhaps around 20 x 30 but it always was a full house every Sunday for services because the Methodist theology was greater then the Catholicism one in the Volcano community!
