Virginia City Nevada had a large Jewish Community just as the Chinese in Old China Town. It was in 1863 during the growth of the Comstock Lode that The Eureka (Hebrew) Society made a purchase on a plot located on the grounds of Cedar Hill to be set aside for a cemetery. They eventually would encase the plot with a wooden fence which today the wood pylons and post are still visible but deplorable hence the new wrought iron fence that took its place. The society had put a great deal of money into this burial ground even the headstones were works of art which today are nearly nonexistent. The locals always described the cemetery as a handsome ground and it truly is as it overlooks Sugar Loaf Mountain from afar in a very isolated canyon just outside the city. Adelia Alder was the first interment here so little is known about her just as much as the six week old child buried here.

Unlike the Silver Terrace Cemeteries this burial ground remained isolated from the other burial grounds in the area. Granted I read that closer to the city there actually was a small Jewish Cemetery today it can no longer be found. However this Hebrew Cemetery can be and more then likely had many more burials then what were left to believe due to vandals and the cemetery falling in disrepair as vegetation claimed the hill.

The cemetery was well taken care of then Comstock Mining began to decline as mills and mines closed. By the late 1880's the population also began to decline. Much of the Jewish community had shrunk down which means the cemetery stopped being used or cared for unfortunately. It did not help that during the past century anti-semitic vandals have stolen and broke nearly every gravestone especially in WWII thus leaving behind many names lost in time but not forgotten! Hence the donation or stone slab which names the interments buried here donated by the Fliess Family in 2004.

Unfortunately the wood fence also began to suffer aging therefore cattle also use to roam within the cemetery. I believe that the Eureka Society is trying to restore the cemetery in doing so they not only put a new fence around it but also a monument listing interments here even though the graves are long gone. One of the only standing stones is Amelia McCreadie which was never desecrated. In turn some believe that it survived the vandalism because her name did not sound Jewish. However other grave site headstones were completely stolen which in a bit baffling considering how much some of them weighed. What is ironic is the Jewish Cemetery in Prague survived the NAZIS of WWII however the Hebrew Cemetery on the outskirts of one of the greatest towns of the American West has nearly faded into history!

At one time a giant Star Of David use to be visible from afar on a fence post to the cemetery dating back to just a few years prior to us visiting here. Some wonder what happened to it or did it become another victim of vandals? I spent a few years trying to find this cemetery it is hidden in the hills and by allot of vegetation. Perhaps that is why the wild mustangs/horses roam around the fence to the cemetery.

As some of you know I am a huge proprietor of wild horses being free in NV. This would not be the wild west without these beautiful creatures and the first time I have ever walked along there side was at this very location so make sure you check out the videos as well. When the cemetery was used it was in the 1800's therefore it was not uncommon to see various mills and mines in full operation surrounding the cemetery. One of them off in the distance afar is the Union Mill & Mine! But besides this massive operation one can see quite a few dump piles, mines and scattered remnants left behind by Comstock miners. Off in the distance once can see the Flowery Mountains Mining District just across the canyon from the cemetery and from what I discovered is that this entire area is full of oddities like giant boot prints that vanish into thin air, barefoot prints in the snow and even ghosts! As a matter in fact for nearly a month after visiting this cemetery or it could have been the Fourth Ward Historic School my house experienced some haunting's such as doors, cupboards and objects slamming in the late hours of the night. I know because one night I witnessed my closet open up at 3am on its own and well that hit the top of my creepy list for strange happenings.

Even though the cemetery remains a bit isolated and requires some offroading to get to its on the outskirts of the city. It so very peaceful back here which is why maybe the Eureka Society decided to erect a cemetery here in hopes it would be left alone and survive the eons of time. As some of you are aware we are not like any other paranormal group you have ever met. I try to bring every element into our research projects so you can see the depth of each location so in simple terms the Virginia City Hebrew Cemetery is more then just a place where the dearly departed rest. With timeless sunsets, wild mustangs, beautiful scenery and history like this it just reminds you of what the early pioneers first seen when the battled the wild west. If you do not understand the American West you will now and we hope you appreciate this addition on our site. All we ever have sought was to preserve this location by making others aware of its condition and the damage that was done to it in the last century.
