Star City also known as Star/Starr was established in 1861 and grew into a very large mining district as well as camp. The city is nestled in Star Canyon on the east side of the Humboldt Range which is somewhat forested with a mix of high desert. A man by the name of Don Ashbaugh made a claim in the area in or around 1860. By 1862 the town boasted a post office which nearly only lasted about 6 years.

The largest mine in the district called the Queen Of Sheba in just a short period of 6 years produced nearly 5 million in revenue in Silver. The population grew so fast that nearly 1000 to 1200 people resided in the canyon. Sadly by 1870 a census shows that only a handful remained after the camps demise to around 78 residents. During its heyday the town boasted a Telegragh Station, church, two hotels, three General stores, Wells Fargo Bank office and at least a dozen or more saloons.

What really led to the towns demise is that the ore deposits in 1868 were running out that is when many of the miners began to leave Star Canyon to find prospects elsewhere. Nevada has over 600 ghost towns most of these became this way when a vein ran dry. Once the mines closed the people generally left to make a living elsewhere. Despite the fact that the Silver was very rich in this region Star City only lasted for a decade.

In 1868 the telegraph office, post and express offices remained in business but also soon would meet there ends. At the time rumor had it that a single family used these businesses or rather operated them. However that was the year that would reveal signs of a struggling mining camp that was about to go bust. However just 8 miles away a similar boomtown named Unionville survived and is still alive even today. Mark Twain had a cabin here which really tells our viewers a bit about the history to this region. Two well known peaks are in this range one being Thunder Mountain the other being Star Peak. By heading up Star Canyon you can get reasonably close enough to summit either peak.

From about 1863 to 1875 a Judge Nash relocated to Humboldt County from Virginia City NV to Star City. He was a foreman for the Sheba Mining Company for about six years. In 1876 he was the sheriff arresting many notable criminals in the region. What people forget is that this is the Wild West so you had outlaws some of them whom tried to rob banks in the region. As once this region despite its seclusion was home to many other mining camps such as Seven Troughs & Tunnel!

There was a BLM standoff with a hermit who tried to claim Star City for itself a few years back. The hermit would shoot at hikers and chasing them out. Sadly this led to the hermits death as he was shot by the law. Whether his ghost wanders the canyon may prove to be true based on the fact my truck was attacked near nightfall in the winter of 2013. Then again with all the rock formations, cliffs, possible caves, deep mines and heavy brush you could be looking at possibly Sasquatch in the region. We found two hidden caves in the region including the hermits den in the woods which has hundreds of cans of beans and plastic Crisco containers with urine in them.

This region may be one of the prettiest locations in all of Nevada as the creek runs through the canyon and in the Spring flowers bloom. Its a place the cattle roam free and butterflies fly through big open green meadows caused by the snowmelts of Star and Thunder Peaks.  There are today very little remnants that a town once existed here you have to hike on foot to find various foundations and few remnants of mining their is not much to see but pure beautiful scenery.. You have some foundations, ruins and mining equipment consumed by brush but its scattered and nature has consumed most of what is left. Some of the mines such as the Sheba can be found today of what once was. With history also comes mystery and we look forward to bringing this location uncovering its dark truths to our viewers in the future. Also for those who want to offroad it to the Sheba Mine stop before you enter the narrow forest the road is out and its very dangerous. We almost went over the cliff beyond the woods and rolled it into the creek this is just for future explorers. Go as far as you can then hike the last mile in to where the Sheba Mine is and where you enter this big valley formed by Star and Thunder Peak.
