When you first enter into Volcano California one of the most picturesque gold country towns in all of the mother lode you are greeted by The St. George Hotel & Whiskey Flat Saloon. The saloon and its hotel ae somwhat iconic to the towns history with over 150 years of history it has been presidents come and go, wars fought and even the passing of many of Volcanoes most promiment residents over the many decades it has stood strong. Despite the fact that fire has destroyed the two previous hotels the current St. George Hotel was built right on top of the older hotels which may be one of the reasons why its is paranormal activitiy is attributed with it.  It also was a site where Mark Twain came to love and visited here a couple times during his stay in Volcano. 

The current three structure building you see in the sierra foothills is three stories tall with wooden balconies throughout. As a matter in fact the hotel was the first 3-story building in the state of California and was named off of B.F. George named "The St. George" to thwart of the demonic fire dragon which the town felt plagued by when the Eureka in 1853 and the Empire in 1859 burnt down.  The final structure you see was built out of brick and mortar to prevent a third fire and since the 1860's it seems to have held up as to become one of the finest hotels in the late 1800's of Amador County.  When a major fire swept through town in 1868 the St. George remained untouched unlike its previous wooden predecessors so that ideology did pay off and locals felt that the fire demon which cursed the town had been stopped.  

The main or lower flow consist of the parlor which has 12' high ceilings and a grand fire place. Then their is the dining room which serves some of the finest dinners in the country.  The other addition to the hotel is the Whiskey Flat Saloon which was added in the 1930's and is known for their prohibition ale which is really awesome. Visitors can tour the old saloon and enjoy some of the old memorabilia found on the walls here. 

The main hotel area has 13 guestrooms on two floors two of them have private bathrooms while the other rooms share the bathrooms just like the wild west.  There is also an addition two story annex building which was added in the 1960's that offers 6 rooms with private bathrooms as well as televisions.  In 2003 a Garden Cottage was added that has its own private deck, queen sized bed, fireplace, Jacuzzi tub, shower, television and DVD player.  Behind that is the Zinfandel Conference Center which is used for conferences, meetings, gatherings and holds a small kitchen. It also contains a separate queen bedroom, living room and television. So as you can see the hotel over the years has grown all the way from old fashioned rooms to fully state of the art modern rooms you can rent. However the older more old fashioned simpler rooms are the ones that are haunted by St. George's resident ghosts. 

The hotel itself has four resident ghosts or at least unseen forces who are often seen here by many of the guest and people who work at the hotel itself.  The most famous is of a 13 year old girl named Rosy with blond curls and a white dress. She is often seen hanging around the upper balcony or in the Soldiers Gulch room. Our team of experts did capture her apparition in the Soldiers Gulch room and it was a good call. When I asked to see the room I was not sure if I would capture her or not but make no mistake about it she is far from shy. Rosy drowned in the lake which use to reside along the St. George Hotel. Today the lake is nonexistent but back then Sutters Creek and that Lake were flourishing.  Rosy is a bit of a trickster although people have seen her running through the halls and even have captured pictures of her peering out the window.  When Rosy is not seen at the St. George Hotel she is seen at the Union so she kind of bounces between both places. 

An other famous ghost that haunts the hotel is Charles Osgood which was said to be the hotels first guest.  Some feel he is responsible for the ghostly footsteps, whispers heard throughout the halls, phantom music played on the piano and strange interactions guest have had with him. Charles dresses very well to do wearing a tall hat and carrying a cane. Charles stayed at the hotel quite often so it is very apparent as to why so many people run into his ghost who some mistaken him as a reenactor.  Sometimes people call him Chuck that really tends to piss him off thank to a medium who did not know what they were doing. Some feel the reason why he haunts the hotel is because he was legally burned back in the day.  According to the manager Charles likes the ladies he tends to put more scare into the men who rent a room from the hotel. Sometimes he likes to mess with housekeeping by messing up the beds on purpose perhaps he is a bit of a prankster. 

The third ghosts seen here time to time is of a lady who went by the name Sara. She tends to carry on as if she is 25 years of age but according to the manager she was probably 35 years old. More then likely Sarah may have worked at the brothel or at least was the towns entertainer.  It is also possibly she was murdered here since prostitutes were more then often subjected to abuse and sometimes even killed by men who refused to pay. Sarah likes to play with the light switches turning them on and off or making them flicker. This seems to be an ongoing regular occurrence for the guest and hotel employees.

The fourth resident ghost is of a man nobody knows much about him or where he came from. But he generally yells or tells others to get out. More or less he tries to scare guest away or from the hotel itself.  I do not think he is responsible for the strange music that gets played here as a matter in fact my theory is that he was one of the unlucky ones who may have been hung at Union Square or died in one of the many shootouts that took place in Volcano.

Aside from the four resident ghost which haunt the St. George Hotel their is allot of unexplained activity that transpires here all the way from banging on the walls, lights flickering, doors unlocking by themselves, strange moans, unseen voices, bed sheets being messed, piano playing by itself, banging on the walls , cold spots, disemboweled footsteps and even at the Old Whiskey Flat a coin throwing ghost.  One thing is for certain their is never a dull moment when the sign read wine and spirits they mean literally lol. Those that dare venture through the halls of the St. George Hotel are going to find that this place not only serves the living but also the dearly departed. That around every corner is a surprise awaiting to be uncovered at least those who dare to listen. 

I realize that other paranormal groups have visited this place but before they publicized this on television I was already here and well aware of its ghost. It is a beautiful place in the warmer months to sit amongst the Daffodils or Tulips and read a book. There are many large trees on the property great for just relaxing perhaps meditating or reflecting on the history that surrounds this place.  While reunions of marriage take place others visit here just to learn about its ghosts.  In addition to the hotel their are many other haunted historical sites nearby such as the Volcano Catholic Cemetery, Volcano Methodist Cemetery and the Volcano Masonic Caves all which have ghost stories of their own surrounding this beautiful hotel.  We really wanted to thank Sharon the hotels manager for allowing us to investigate the hotel and showing us around.
