Spruce Creek Park & Preserve

We were in search of a historical site but could not find it so we moved on to the Spruce Creek area after visiting 3 other small parks one that had a fishing pier. That is the downside to some investigations some places you find other places cannot be found no matter how hard you try. But with only a couple hours till the sun came up I wanted to get our weekly woods hike on in.

Although I was focused on ghost in the two previous investigations I was more tuned in on Florida Skunk Ape activity. When your hiking in the Florida woods long enough you start to realize their are more then just ghost that watch or lurk around you.

This investigation had two separate parks as the spruce creek preserve is large full of woods, trails, wildlife, creeks and swamps. We got out of the car I had a Gatorade break and of course we started our hike. One area was to Rose Bay which we would not have time for the other was to the creek, camping areas, woods etc.

We took the trail that led to the creek which had this pier that led out to two gazebos right out in the middle of Spruce Creek. As we walked about 50 feet onto the pier I thought I seen a figure hiding in the gazebo and I did not think to much of it till later I shined my spotlight again and some guy was standing up with his arms open coming at us lol.

I thought it was pretty strange seeing someone out here by themselves like this but we just walked away slowly since this person seemed a little agitated probably thought we were forest rangers with these giant spotlights.

We got off of the wood docks and back into the woods where things really started to becoming active. The first thing was some movement in a bush it probably was a coon or armadillo just by how it sounded rustling in different directions as I was looking for it.

Then to our right was very heavy movement it started off as a huge branch snapping on the ground then another. When I stopped it stopped. We both shined our lights nothing was their yet this movement was just a few feet away. The stench in the air was horrible smelled rotten almost and one of the branches off one of the palms was swaying like crazy like something got snagged on it.

But whatever did this all of sudden was to the right and maybe I was seeing things but I could have sworn I seen this reddish brownish blur move at a high rate of speed so fast that it was just a mirage. But something was moving around out their and it was big we could not see it though.

We walked down the dirt trail and again we heard something out their and it followed us till we reached the campsites where some tents had this nice fire burning. So apparently what was here did not like the fire or the idea of following us to where a lot of people would be.

We by accident shined our spotlight on one of the tents oops it happens lol the things we go threw for our investigations. The road eventually came around to the park entrance and near my car. We did get on out of their and headed on off to the Gamble Place for a second investigation. Before I get into that though I will go into part two of this investigation.

Okay we were at the Gamble Place which sits on the Spruce Creek Preserve but this time I actually had a chance to do some exploring on the preserve unlike last year around this time so basically we were on the backside of Spruce Creek.

We parked the car and hiked down the road in search of trails that would lead us deep into the preserve. Their was of course the Gamble Place which we passed by on our hike and would do a follow up investigation after. Jason and I noticed it was very dark back here their was no moon out nothing to illuminate us just our lights which were gradually losing power.

We found the first trail which was almost a mile long and very overgrown. I heard what sounded like a dog nearby then some other odd sounding birds in the distance. The trail twisted and turned it was so over grown a few times we ended up off of it and in jungle like fauna.

At this point my spotlight when dead instantly so I thought to myself if we lose our lights we will end up probably lost cause it was so thick with fallen trees, brush, hills, and fauna that once the lights go out you could end up walking for miles without even knowing your direction. I also found near this area giant stones which looked like they were part of some foundation at one time in the woods.

Their was different points on the trail with markings at one time they were used in tours to explain the different historical spots in the woods. One of them was this giant tree without any branches it was pretty eerie looking. Nearby we found a huge spider I never seen a species like this it had a square body and very bulk legs. When I put my sword near it the spider quickly attacked it clinging onto the metal and trying to bite it.

So at this point I knew their were some dangers in these woods cause if my sword came near it imagine us walking threw one of their webs what would happen if they in contact with our skin.

We ended up somehow straying off the trail since it split cause it was overgrown so we took the left path which led us to this huge clearing in the middle of the woods. If you ask me that was pretty eerie felt like we were very vulnerable here. We ended up back at the trail head which was odd so we never completed the mile long trail but its kind of good in a way cause my light was out and the trail was so overgrown that it took us probably a half hour just to go a short distance.

We then found another trail a few hundred feet away which had a keep out sign and a blockade. We climbed on over it and walked down this giant hill in the middle of the woods. The sides were real steep and it looked like we may have entered an Indian mound type of area which the area is notorious for its shell middens.

This area was a lot different it was intense very rugged, tree roots growing out of the ground, steep ravines etc till we ended up walking right to the bank of Spruce Creek. Their was a little dock and it was very unstable. We did end up slowly working out way on it but some wood boards were missing and many were starting to bow as we walked on it.

You can only imagine how a gator or two was probably waiting below for a nice snack lol. But we made it fine the creek was pitch black and dark we could not hardly see a thing. I felt like this was a bad dead end if something were to surround us cause we had the woods in front of us and the creek in back of us. We eventually did make our way out of here to the trail entrance.

I do believe much more remains to be seen on the preserve at night this place is very dark and of course their is a lot of wildlife in the woods like giant cats things of that sort. Some people enjoy to canoe down the creek and enjoy the wildlife and being I found some canoes I was pretty tempted to enjoy a little creek cruise myself or at least It crossed my mind lol.

It was a nice investigation not a lot of activity  but I heard again something big out in those woods some odd sounds and their was one area their was a strange odor. I think the preserve would be a place where anything can hide after all its Indian ground lots of myths and stories passed down over the years I am sure. While we were investigating the preserve I made a pit stop at the Gamble Place. Considering we were walking on an unstable dock we were very lucky that we did not fall in and old one eyed Joe the giant alligator did not eat us lol.
