One of the most beautiful picturesque valleys found in the Sierra Nevada mountain range is the great sierra valley where the small ranching town of Sierraville resides. Its a whole little community with a little church, school, beautiful country homes and some of the most historic ranches in the state of California. If I were to move away and live elsewhere this location would be at the top of my list the energy here incomparable to no other. When we add such locations to our website we try to do it with the intent to educate others and help preserve these locations. Sure the paranormal plays a part in what we do but its not all we do!

Sierra Valley was formed when the continental crust was dropped by the same faulting that raised the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is the largest alpine valley in the continental United States and trust me when I say that it truly a monolithic natural wonder as granite peaks tower above the valley floor. The valley is surrounded by conifer, aspen and woodland forest. Within the valley itself are green pastures used for ranching as well as crops which are grown in the warmer months. In the Spring many areas within the valley and its meadows are covered with wild flowers. Deer, horses, cattle, coyote and other smaller animals are often seen running across the valley. At higher elevations especially as you head towards Truckee Ponderosa Pines are in abundance.

Before the emigrants and pioneers came to the region this area was a prime location for the Washoe Tribe to hunt. The natives had a seasonal village in an adjacent valley known as Kyburz Flat. The warriors of the tribe would set out to the this great valley in search of deer near the ponds and creeks where they would graze at. The valley was very lush and during the warmer months was an ideal location for native tribes to migrate to in search of basic necessities for over 2000 years. The valley had not changed since the times the natives used it to hunt for game. Today Sierraville is small in comparison to the rest of this alpine valley. The natives enjoyed taking a dip in the hot springs and today they still exist so very little has changed.

In the 1850's the Henness Pass wagon road was built which ran just south of the valley that brought in an influx of emigrants to the region. Many of those early pioneers were Italian-Americans who begin to settle the valley in the mid 1800's. Some of the locals at the time felt the area was enchanted and used the valley it as a retreat. Sierraville became one of the earliest communities found in this alpine valley and region in 1853. Other towns, camps and communities did exist such as Loyalton, Calpine and Sattley.

 Unlike its sister mining town of Sierra City California which focused on gold mining it was Sierraville that focused primarily on ranching and farming. The ranches provided hay, cattle, crops, lumber and dairy products for Truckee, Sierra City, local mining camps and the Comstock Lode of Virginia City Nevada.  Today if you explore this valley you will find that many of the historic barns and ranches are some of the oldest standing in the state of California passed down from one generation to the next.

The lumber industry was considered part of the agricultural economy in Sierraville and played a big part of the regions development. The Sierra Valley lumber company would supply the Comstock Lode Mines, Central Pacific Railroad and California fruit industry with wood necessary to sustain these operations. Some of the lumber used in the Donner Summit Railroad Tunnels which cut down in this valley and the ties laid between the tracks. Some of it can be seen in the historic structures found in Truckee to the south and in many of the mines that remain abandoned today. Another notable mention is Hobart Mills Lumber Company which had a base camp on the beautiful shores of Independence Lake. A wagon road from Sierraville takes you to this gem and once booming lumber camp.

The lumber industry operated from the 1860's all the way into the later 1900's. All when many of the local town mines went bust not much lumber would be needed it managed to survive for over 100 years. The lumbering did take a toll on the valley as the tree lines sit closer to the granite hills that surround town as many areas were cleared out are now today used for ranching in its place.

Although Sierraville never reveled in mining an eight pound nugget was found near town it does not appear that it was enough to bring in enough miners to the area. Their was a few mines but most of them were either closer to Truckee or up near Sierra City California therefore most of the folks who passed through this valley were either farmers or tourist. Sheriff John Campbell developed the local hot springs which were rumored to contain healing properties for those who took a dip in them. He established a hotel which could hold up to 80 overnight guest. Other hotels came to be for example those that own the Hot Springs also own The Globe Hotel downtown. Tourism became just as big of an industry as those who ventured here had access to the eastern sierras and northern California's Gold Country!

The post office came to be in 1862 and became known as the Sierraville post office in 1899 which still exist today. One of the only brick built grocery stores downtown still stands today which was constructed of Sierra Valley brick. Besides a few other structures such as the cafe, hotel, historic homes and ranches not many other sites remain of the original town. What you will see while viewing our pages is a birds eye perspective of the region as quaint as it is its not as extensive as Truckee or Sierra City nearby. However what is left does date back to the 1800's some made out of native stone others lumber that was milled in this valley. Many of the homes are from the Victorian Era certainly some of them probably have a ghost story or two to go with them.

The Tahoe National Forest Service also has a district office located in Sierraville. Being an avid outdoorsman I can tell you right now their is a reason I keep returning here to explore it as Sierraville resides in the heart the Tahoe National Forest which in my opinion is a one of the gems of the Sierra Nevada mountains some tend to overlooks.

Today life slows down in Sierraville as the town only boast one traffic signal which is a flashing red light. As a matter in fact its the only traffic signal in all of Sierra County. In the winter of 2007 it was taken down after a severe auto accident then replaced once again in the Fall of 2008. If you explore the town on foot you will find all sorts of relics such as wagons, old wooden fencing, rusty remnants like wood stoves and many relics of the past. The town cemetery sits on a woodsy hill strangely it looks like an island in the valley and no other trees grow around it.  The church is one of the oldest congregations in Sierra County. Even while you are taking a stroll downtown you can look just about anywhere to see horses and cattle grazing.

Bigfoot country is just knocking on Sierraville's doorstep and in my opinion based on this project the quiet streets of Sierraville are haunted. I should have recorded more EVP I only did a few minutes worth downtown and caught three EVP's which means that allot of unseen energy remains to be seen or I was just standing at the right place right time!

Sierraville is a lovely, picturesque and friendly little town its a true historic gem as well as the gateway to some of the most beautiful wilderness areas found in the Tahoe National Forest. A few weeks after my expedition to Sierraville I came back to take some of the dirt roads surrounding the town and seen all sorts of wildlife including a massive brown bear. This is one of the best kept secrets due to it being a ranching community allot of folks pass through town to get to Lake Tahoe and tend to overlook what the great sierra valley has to offer!
