Our journey into Sierra City takes us through Deadman's curves which you will catch the tail end of it as I begin filming. Soon we will be arriving in Sierra City an old gold rush mining town that dates back to the mid 1800's as the monolithic Sierra Buttes are sighted off in the distance that tower above it. Eventually our drive will take us through downtown where the cemetery lies at the western edge of town. The road that takes us through the Yuba Pass at one time was a wagon road for the early pioneers who came to the region seeking its gold. Were driving through the most northern region of the Tahoe National Forest a new region for us to explore one that does not disappoint! In the winter downtown is closed one can see as we go through town not a soul is in plain sight.
This graveyard dates back to the 1860's many of the interments here are that of miners, pioneers and some of the first residents who set eyes on the Sierra Buttes along with this gold rush town. Many of the pioneers here died up in the mines or from repeated avalanches which struck the town from 1853 till about 1911. Some of them are masons but also belonged to other fraternal organizations such as E. Clampus Vitus which originated here. While others are orphans who lost their parents or succumbed to the harshness of the surrounding frontier. We invite you to take this tour of one of the finest pioneer cemeteries in northern California. Although the cemetery tells a tale it is full of beauty such as flowers and birds chirping on this crisp winter morning.

Sierra City came to be in 1850 as the town at one time was built higher up on a ledge within the Sierra Buttes which overshadow the town. An avalanche destroyed the town in 1853 and in 1858 it was rebuilt. This region contained some of the richest gold mines in California during the gold rush and largest nuggets including one that weighed in at 106lbs. Today the mining has ceased but many of the historical remnants of the past and structures from the 1800's still stand including the Masonic Hall which served also as a school built in 1864. You get a sense of magic in the air as I take you on this historic tour through downtown and down various streets which contain cozy rustic homes. This area is pure, untouched as beauty and history lurks around every turn. Over 30 million in gold was retrieved from its mines and river in this canyon.

The Kentucky Mill & Mine is a prime example of early mining history which transpired in Sierra City. The mine was worked in the 1850s later the stamp mill came to be to process the gold. The thousand pound stamps were so loud that the townsfolk could hear them throughout the day. Today the site is a park and a museum the mills stamps are the only operable ones in the state. The mine itself was built into the Sierra Buttes very common back in the day as where there was quartz there was gold. Next to the entrance is an old miners cabin which has many of the necessary relics of its day needed for survival. The mine cart tracks had a split one led to a dump pile near the cliff while the other took the quartz in the mill to be crushed for gold processing. Many remnants scatter the hillside pieces that are museum worth and used during this mining operation. This tour is just a taste of things to come we will return to work with the mill more extensively.


Loves Falls resides just outside of Sierra City within the Tahoe National Forest on the Pacific Crest Trail. Back in the day this was a lovers hotspot today its a hiking mecca for those who wish to seek out its beauty. Despite drought as you can see its very lush and water is very abundant as rapids flow over its rocks forming pools of crystal clear water. Along the way you will see remnants of a placer mining operation which at one time many mines operated along the Yuba River today leaving such remnants behind. It is called Loves Falls because supposedly there is a heart-shaped rock found here near the wooden foot bridge. I took my family back here so my son could try a hand at gold panning although most of the gold is long gone it was fun trying! The Pacific Crest Trail is full of rewards such as this these falls are only one of many!
This is a short tour of various gems found bordering Sierra City which include the Yuba River, Memorial Falls, Sierra Buttes, Lake Basin and Old Chimney. You can kind of get a sense how remote this region is and a taste of things to come. Below the Sierra Buttes lies over 45 lakes and dozens of secluded trails. It is hard to say all that remains hidden surrounding the outskirts of Sierra City but we one day hope to find out. Many mines with over 100 miles of tunnels are found under the forest floor and today those old mining operations remain hidden in this vast wilderness. This is an area that is full of Bigfoot lore in most cases the ones found here are said to throw large rocks. What adventures await our team next? What will we find above and below the Sierra Buttes in the Lakes Basin? Welcome to the Tahoe National Forest these are its gems that await us!
