Salem Welsh Church & Cemetery was established in 1855. The area is probably not bigger then an acre as stones completely surrounded the church. For over many years the church is being restored by the Salem Cemetery Society and is now being recognized as a historical landmark. The church is just about full restored if not anything it looks brand new. The only way to tell that it is from the 1800s is that it has a stone foundation made of big offset stone blocks. The cemetery contains some of the earlier settlers of Freedom NY which in the early 1800s only one Saw Mill, 2 churches, and 174 people resided here. Some of the names you will see are Owens, Jones Ect..So it is one of these small town chapels where folks would gather on a Sunday afternoon on a warm day as butterflies would surround the church. As the area it sits now is all country and pretty much it sits alone except for a few near by homes.

The area is very eerie indeed this is one of these type of churches and cemeteries you see in the movies. Is it haunted? I believe so moving cold spots here, feelings of being watched in the darker side of the church, and one of the photos captured show us otherwise. Surprisingly a street lamp and home illuminates the entire church and cemetery so whatever lurks remains fairly quiet here. I always wanted to investigate a place like this and now we are able to bring you a little story on it. Sort of reminds you of one of them churches back during the Salem Witch Trials. But with history comes a past and this church has one as we take you back in time to one of the oldest churches in WNY.
