The old Hilltop or as some call it Hillside Cemetery was erected in the 1870's with that in mind it is the oldest of its kind in the city of Reno NV. It is rumored to be haunted by multiple apparitions one is a woman wearing all black, little girl and even a soldiers ghost. Over the years other groups have visited the site gathering EVP from within.

The hillside cemetery is divided in four sections however each one is fenced off or rather segregated separated based on theology so in the future we will return to visit the other burial grounds. Hillside however is the most deplorable out of all the cemeteries which border one another as years ago people would drive there cars right over tombstones. Not to mention that despite there is 1400 burials here most of the stones are either missing or vandalized. Some stones have graffiti while others are just not legible. Its a very sad situation this is why I decided to visit this location in hopes to expose the truth not of its haunting's but of its condition.

From within the cemetery one can view all of downtown Reno's lights from atop of the hill and also great views of the nearby Mt. Rose. Even at night the cemetery is very bright as its surrounded by one of Reno's oldest housing districts and UNR. I have heard talks that the University Of Reno is trying to have the bodies exhumed and removed. They want to build dorms on top of hollowed ground as many of the locals see this place as an eyesore. The problem is at this time their is no community involvement for cleanup of the grounds thus the conditions continue to deteriorate.

The cemetery was recorded with the County Assessor as a "Tract" in 1882 as individual plots were sold and deeded to buyers. The original owner of the tract was a W. Saunders who died shortly after in 1904. Thus the cemetery lacked in up keeping as time went on then later on came the other burial grounds across the road known as the Knights Of Pythius, Hebrew and Grand Army Of The Republic Cemeteries. Despite the fact that the Reno City Council formed the Hillside Cemetery Foundation in 2005 nothing has been done sadly.

However through our hard work we want others to understand its historical value considering that many of Reno's early pioneers and original settlers are buried here. Names like Frank Orr, Edmund Plumb and George Peckham are just a few of many whose graves can be found here. These men have streets named after them in Reno and many are familiar with them even to present date. Our job is to make sure they are remembered thus I had formed a damaged page to show others how horrific the cemetery has become. I think its time rather then removing the entire cemetery to restore it to its former glory we owe the dearly departed that much despite its age it is a historical site.

Somebody has to care it all starts with YOU! One kind small gesture can make a difference whether this cemetery survives or it takes another blow by having dorms built over its graves. We only have one life to live who will remember us once we are gone? Sometimes the only memory left behind are the stones which tell everyone who they were and what they stood for which shaped Reno's history today!
