Mayville is a 200 year old town in WNY. It is old and has quite a history such as the Holland Company Raid of 150-300 men that burnt it down or that during its town meeting they named it after a baby called May. This is the type of town people dream of living in. As the trees are lit on main street, and you have your parades, circus's, festivals and other family orientated activities. The area of Mayville of course is much older then 200 years. Back in 1679 by Lasalle visited the shores of Chautauqua Prior to this time the Erie Indians had roamed the region, but had been destroyed as a tribe by the Iroquois, in 1656. Even a name was established at this time when the French claimed the land built a road which settlers migrated in the area. The name Tchadakoin which sounded a lot like the Holland Land Company. So that is a little history.

The last public hanging in NYS took place in Mayville. Back then in the 1800s they had the lynch laws if you were caught stealing, rape, gambling or counterfeiting you were often hung in the public square. At the time this was common since there were no prison systems. Many of the Seneca Indians in the area had there land taken from them and I am sure some violence did occur even if it meant hanging some of them. Hanging was meant for public humiliation it was meant to put fear into the people so they would not steal again or commit similar crimes.

Today the 1834 school still stands or rather was rebuilt near where the hangings took place. But at the time the hanging area was part of the village. But it was the perfect place for executions to have taken place since it sat on a tall hill and was pretty close to the old historical court house and other landmarks which still exist today in the village. There is a book about the incidents that took place here called the Last Public Hanging and it talks about the hanging that took place. So this struck my interest as this place possibly being haunted especially after hearing rumors of strange things seen behind the school.

Is the area haunted? Big time I mean these people were brutally hung and maybe some of them were innocent or did not have a say. There is a lot of energy here and its hard to tell where where exactly the hangings took place whether they used a wooden platform or they used a tree which could have been cut down later on. But based on our investigation we learned that this took place pretty close to the playground. We could not get anything on film on the grounds but right where the playground stands. Perhaps they built the playground as a way to cover up the past? But seeing ectoplasm with your eyes, odd rope noises, creaks, feeling watched, cold spots, and the echoes of the wind are all noticeable here. Perhaps the ghost stay here because they find a certain peace knowing children come to play there maybe for them it is there redemption? But we are happy to bring you a story on this place and of course with any place there usually is history and spooks to go with it.
