At one time Masonic was a boom town with about 1000 residents. The town was founded by Free Masons which boasted a post office, boarding house, general store and even a newspaper called the Masonic Pioneer. The town was divided into three sections which was upper, middle and lower with middle being the largest of the districts. It was not always named Masonic as prior to 1905 when the post office first initially opened it was called Lorena.

Masonic is only within miles of Bodie and The Chemung Mill and Mine. It resides in a canyon near the Nevada border in California in some of the most scenic locations of the western United States. Its a true ghost town with scattered cabins, mines nestled on wooded hills and even an intact tram system. Today allot of adventurers visit here either to camp or drive a herd of sheep through the narrow canyon.

Gold was discovered at this location in the 1860's thus a mining camp began to grow which would began to truly die at the turn of the century. One of the most famous mines was called the Pittsburgh-Liberty Mine which produced nearly $700,000 in gold before it closed in 1910. The ore processing mill still stands today which you can view photos of further below on this page of what is remaining of the town site today.

The town also had a tram system which would transport the ore to the mill since the mines were considerably a good distance away. When the post office opened in 1905 it ended up closing in 1912 then reopening in 1913 only to close again in 1927. Generally everything closed in the 1920's including the mines after that Masonic became a true ghost town.

Mines were not really productive till around the early 1900's when Joseph Green staked claim to the Rich Jump Up Joe Mine. On Independence day in 1902 J.S. Phillips from Pittsburgh and his partner J.M. Bryan and Caleb Dorsey made a claim calling it the Pittsburg Liberty mine in honor of his birthplace and founding date. Although their were many mines surrounding the town none of them ran very deep and most were exhausted quickly unlike the rich veins in the nearby Bodie California.

Sadly Philips would later be found at the bottom of a mine shaft nobody knew if it was a murder or an accident. Its possibly one of his own partners did him in just to cash in on the mines rich pockets this mystery may never be solved.  Just a little ways down the road from Masonic is another haunted mill and mine we investigated under similar circumstances. I believe the two incidents are related and that whoever murdered the foreman at the Chemung may have also did in Philips perhaps out of greed. Mining made some men crazy with gold fever while at the same time betrayal was not uncommon.

Masonic is rumored to be haunted and I have to say its a strange place. Their is a mixed feelings of being watched just as their is allot of predatory animals such as mountain lions found here. Today the town site is overran with rodents and bats which cling to the ceilings of the open mines. Not much really remains as nature has consumed most of the town site however what does remain should be treasured since the town is in great disrepair.
