At one point in Nevada history ancient lake Lohontan covered almost the entire Grimes Point area which consist mainly of Basalt Rock. Sometimes this lake receded and when it did its marshy remnants left behind a wide variety of plants and animal species. Some of those species today include a variety of lizards, snakes and other reptiles found in this region. Prior to this ancient lake in the Grimes Point area was at least 400 feet deep which is equivalent to some of the depths that are found in our great lakes in the northeast.

Grimes Point may be one of the greatest petroglyph sites in Northern Nevada hell maybe the western United States for that matter. The native Americans started visiting and hunting in this area over 8,000 years ago. There are bits of bones, shells discarded from meals, stone scrappers used in butchering smaller animals and tule matting that was discovered at this location. I have even heard a story about a few human remains being discovered up here as well who were some of the first inhabitants to set eyes at this location. Please note that Petroglyphs are etched or carved into the rocks do not get them confused with pictographs which are painted at sites like the Toquima Cave.

As a matter in fact their are many caves found in this region I have not visited them all as the major one that was discovered was Hidden Cave. Hidden Cave goes about 150' back and was used by hunters and gatherers as a catch or possible storage site. Many tools and archaeological discoveries were found in the cave. Just as another cave called Burnt Cave was used by the natives to cook there food and rest their weary bodies after the hunt. Other caves found in the area were the Grimes Burial Shelter, Spirit Cave, Hanging Rock and Fish Cave. These shelters and caves were used by the natives not just for storage but the actual burial of their dead.

An Archaeologists by the name of S.M. and Georgia Wheeler unearthed the "Spirit Cave Man" which is the oldest mummy in all of North America back in the 1940's. The mummy dates back to almost 10,000 years ago and was a male in his 40's. The cave man was buried with woven clothing, moccasins and even a rabbit skin blanket as well as other tools. This is why it is such an important location for our society to work more in depth with taking paranormal readings, evps and collecting evidence. There is ALLOT of energy at Grimes Point so all at the same time we are unmasking these ancient spirits we also get to share the beauty that surrounds this region in the Great Basin.

The Grimes Point area was used by the natives for hunting and there are signs of old corrals made out of rocks to trap deer and antelope. The group leader of the hunting party would perform a ritual prior to each hunt. The petroglyphs tell a story and in some way these ceremonies were thought to promote a good harvest of meat that could be brought back to the natives villages. Why other works of art depict religion and spiritualism. These petroglyphs depict the kind of stories of how life was once like back then when across the world the great pyramids were being built in Egypt. So this is definitely a very ancient site and its an honor to be able to have the opportunity to work with this site on a much more in depth level.

The Grimes Point area is full of trails the original one was constructed by the Youth Conservation Corps and named Nevada's first National Recreation Trail in 1978. What makes this unique is that it is one of the only accessible petroglyph sites in the United States. Unless your not there for the petroglyphs your in for a huge surprise as this is the great basin and its very vast full of wildlife. Its not just a place full of scenic beauty but its also a place of mystery such as some have claimed that the mummy found is indeed a different race of human maybe even possibly an alien which is similar to a human. Some say that the mummy was not a native American at all but rather a white man which questions the fact whether the Europeans may have came to America thousands of years prior to the first explorers during the time Christopher Columbus made his journey across the Atlantic ocean.

I have also discovered that some enthusiast who visit some of the ancient sites at Grimes Point have visions while others claim that this area is full of vortexes as well as hidden portals. Some say that ancient alien races came to this area and that some of the petroglyphs depict other worldly beings. I have read that the Lemurians, Syrians, Atlanteans and Pleadeans used these portals as a means to travel to and from earth. I have read that the Grimes Point area has time traveling gates as well found in some of its most hidden caves which are said to lead to vast tunnel networks leading to our Hollow Earth. I know these things sound outrageous or something that you might see in a Sci-fi movie however it is important that we as humans keep an openmind. The answers we seek may be found within universe or even for that matter right within our reaches of Grimes Point.

Step back in history at Grimes Point

Over 8,000 years ago, Native Americans first visited Grimes Point, now one of Nevada's finest National Recreation Trails where rock writings and petroglyphs can be viewed on a self-guiding tour.

Grimes Point Archaeological Area is just eleven miles east of Fallon and features a fascinating shelf-guided trail filled with intriguing rock writings and art of ancient civilizations. The information about the trail is provided at the site in a brochure that visitors can pick up and take with them as they explore. The site has recently been upgraded and includes a restroom, five sheltered picnic tables, and interpretive kiosk, new benches and a paved parking lot and road. The trails themselves have been upgraded to increase wheelchair accessibility.

Grimes Point showcases several different styles of petroglyphs and rock surfaces upon which they are etched. The various patinas are evidence of chemical changes in the rocks over time. After a petroglyphs is etched into the rock, the newly exposed scar is lighter than the original surface. Over time, the petroglyphs will eventually patinate and be as dark as the original rock surface. Some of the petroglyphs are darker than others. These are probably older than the lighter ones.

Deciphering the meaning of petroglyphs is often difficult. Many scientists and archaeologists disagree on their meaning; but it is generally acknowledged that the petroglyphs at Grimes Point are not a form of writing. Whether they depict constellations, hunting areas, or markers of another kind, Grimes Point offers a must-see window into the past.

It is also important to remember that the environment at Grimes Point was much different 8,000 years ago. As you look at the mountain ranges in the distance, you'll notice a series of horizontal lines or terraces etched into the side of the range. These scars are results of waves from ancient Lake Lahontan that once covered most of the area. The maximum depth of the lake was 700 feet, covering Grimes Point. By the time human population moved into the area, Grimes Point was above water.

Grimes Point also can be a vista of contrast. Standing on the trail and looking out over the valley, it is fun to imagine what the landscape looked like to ancient peoples. As you imagine a fresh water lake filled with fish and ducks and waterfowl swimming under the shade of cottonwood trees, you may look over-head to see an F/A-18 Hornet from NAS Fallon making a sweeping turn in the sky. From the past to the present in the blink of an eye.
