When I first heard of Grantsville Nevada it was after the time I went up to Berlin Nevada and a friend of mine told me their is a place that rivals its nearby predecessor or sister town. One of the most wonderful things I enjoy about paranormal investigating is literally traveling into the wild west not knowing where you might go or what you might see. In the heart of Nevada it is an open range so you might see a few cattle grazing along side of an old wagon road. The same wagon roads that once led the early miners and pioneers to build a boom town. It only remains a boom town for a very short time but it was during those years that gave meaning to the wild west.

In 1863 gold was discovered in Grantsville Canyon which became the heart of the Union Mining District for the town of Grantsville. You see by 1879 the town boasted almost 1000 residents. It had two barber shops, jewelry store, assay office, bank, fine restaurant, 12 saloons, two general merchandise stores, three newspapers, school, bakery, hotel, laundry, hardware store, livery stable, brothels and two pharmaceutical drug stores. All nestled in what we call today the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

The town was named after General and President Grant of the Union Army hence why the mining district and the towns name took on an eastern overtone to honor them both. When gold was found in the canyon their were only about 50 miles at that time the canyon was lined with tents. The miners ate beans and this life often came with a price sometimes that was your very own life.

P.A. Haven in 1863 actually promoted the potentials of the richness of the land that being the Shoshone Mountains baring stories to the public that those who came to Grantsville could seek out its gold bearing Ore. Although an ore gold vein was discovered by this man he basically tried to promote its potential far beyond the capacity of gold that was really here arising false high hopes in those who came here. This man sold real estate to prospectors from $50 to $500 dollars so his scheme of selling the ideal of gold made him a rich man. He would take all the money from the property he sold as his gold ore vein was at its end so from 1863 to 1877 were dark times as this would be the first time it would become nearly a ghost town.

So really life did not boom in Grantsville till the Alexander Company came into town in 1877 buying up many of the claims then building a twenty - stamp mill enlarging it to 40 stamps three years later hiring over 30 men that is when truly Grantsville bloomed. By 1881 the town had over forty business establishments and it seemed that this town would grow into a city. It had an express office and even a bank it was a very civil town a wholesome place to live. The Order Of Odfellows even built their own school which as large enough for 60 students. If you scroll above you can kind of get an idea of how large Grantsville was and how many types of businesses that flourished here at one time. Now as of current the saloons, stores, hotel and stables are just mere piles of debris withering away in the elements. Its hard to believe that when you spend time walking amongst the ruins that at one time these forgotten streets were bustling.

In 1878 the postal mail came three times to town imagine how eager people were to have that ability to talk to one another. Today we use the Internet but back then people wrote so a letter meant something. Besides the postal mail you had three stagecoach roads one led to Austin the other two to Eureka and Wadsworth. Imagine that at the time the Historic Indian School was in session it would live far beyond the years of Grantsville. In the early 1880's their were fourteen Silver Mines and two gold mines. The Union Canyon alone reaped by 1985 millions of dollars in revenue worth of gold and silver. The Alexander Mine alone the ones you see in our galleries went as deep as 1200' with 500' inclines shafts.

Sadly by 1884 most of the residents left decreasing its population to around 400 residents as veins were exhausted. Thus many of the homes and businesses remained empty shells of what was or anotherwards things began to look like a ghost town especially by 1886 when only 50 people remained behind. By 1887 the Grantsville Post Office closed the town tried to rebound with new mining operations in 1907 and 1947.

Another thing that struck the boom town years of this town are the stories of three dark murders during a time when the mines were making millions most men would succumb to their greed!. Honestly I feel today the ghost of the men who died here haunt this little town nestled in the Shoshone Mountains as some of the EVP we captured presents hard evidence that their is some kind of presence that haunts the stone ruins of Grantsville today.

I read in a book called Preserving The Glory Days: Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Nye County, Nevada which talks about the three murders. The first was in 1880 when a Thomas Burn killed a Thomas Mack in his sleep. The men prior to this were seen drinking nobody could ever find a motive for it. The second murder took place in 1881 when a man by the name of Mattias Salmon shot to death a very popular resident who goes by the name of S. Merrill. At the time the town had no jail therefore they threw Salmon in an abandoned mine which during that time the town raised arms dragging him over to the Alexander Mill lynching him from the cross beams. The same cross beams you see in our videos and photos. The third murder remains a mystery however now you can understand why a cemetery was needed in a town that at one time was lawless truth be told.

In 1907 when a prospector Bob Hanchett came along and discovered some gold dust starting another strike. This actually made several folks relocate here to bring back many of the businesses including a saloon while three women started their own bother. The problem was that Bob he salted one of the tunnels with the gold dust which other prospectors figured out as they spent some of their last remaining funds at the saloon in town. In the wild west people were killed for allot rest with a sham such as this. To make matters worse for a second boom the brothel had burned down so all the girls went to other nearby towns. This gave less reason for the men to want to stick around and prospect here.

There supposedly is a cemetery no I did not find it but we have plans to go back. From what I read on another ghost town adventurer sites is that one grave is legible it reads as this. Touhay, died April 1881 at the age of 38 he was a native of Ireland. So you have to understand that people lived and they died here even though Grantsville never made it to the top. Even when the ore ran out the mines continued to operate. I went inside the original Grantsville Mine later called the Alexander Mine and it was like an ant hill or honey comb of tunnels, shafts, caverns, underground rooms and hundreds of feet of mine cart tracks. So for a mine to be that large it was obvious some of the miners continued to work these tunnels in hopes of striking it rich which never came to light.

When I walk through town what I see are failed dreams I know so many took a chance at going out into the heart of the Nevada wilderness to try to strike it rich. When the gold ran out so did the money families were leaving by the day. Just about all that you see is here is all that is really left on occasion some stone ruins or the old school or a miners cabin but other then that their are very few signs that once a large town in the Shoshone Mountains once resided here. That is what makes this town so haunted it is because some gave their soul to Grantsville while history has left behind the mark of an era of what once was. This is the true wild west a rattle snake bites you here you could be saying your last rites just as one wrong mistake in the mine could mean your last breath. Grantsville is beautiful but it has its dangers which are only for a certain type of adventurer who dares to go here and even beyond its boundaries!
