All that remains of Empire City are the graves of those who braved the wild west buried here on Ambrose Hill. In this very cemetery you have many of the first residents of old Empire City all the way from politicians to children and those that worked the mills. Today many of the graves are in peril out of the two hundred graves only half are marked while the land itself is the site of one of Nevadas first ranches. These pioneers came to this area when this was Utah territory before NV reached statehood some of them were also part of Carson Cities history the state capitol. Not only is this cemetery very historic but its also haunted.

Empire Cemetery will always hold a special piece of my heart with so many reasons as to why. This cemetery was the first location and case file we have had since our relocation to the Carson Valley region. I use to talk about living the dream but now we are living it. With that in mind this is a very beautifully historic as imagine this cemetery sits on a hill which overlooks Carson City and the high Sierra Mountains which stay snow capped most of the year. The river meanders below the hill so you can imagine how wonderful this location is for a paranormal explorer such as myself to have stumbled across on.

We want others to know that our relocation has finally took place allowing us to really delve deep into the heart of the Sierras and surrounding places. Empire Cemetery is just one of the many case files we will bring to our viewers and so with that in mind this long forgotten overgrown cemetery will finally get noticed through our hard work.

Many who founded the small community of Empire are found buried in Empire Cemetery which includes the founder himself Nicholas Ambrose. He was buried here in 1880 along with his wife who died in 1912. Although their are a few graves from the 1900s generally most date back to almost during the times of the Civil War. Allot of the graves are crumbling some have been vandalized and others are just plain weathered. Not only does the cemetery have early founders of Empire but also some of the founders of Carson City NV who were very promiment residents that helped shape the state capital.

I feel and so does Tammy our lead investigator that their is the ghost of a little girl in this cemetery. I been doing this work for a long time so generally what I can say is very trusted information I share with our viewers. Their are graves here that are illegible or so badly ruined that you cannot read the names. In my opinion this feeling I get here is peaceful but at the same time I feel there is no resolution for the unseen here.

This place doesnt get allot of visitors and it is in the industrial area of town although it does overlook many scenic sites the dump has built their operations right along side of this burial ground. We will return a few times here before we close are case. We generally only visit each location once or twice out of respect for each location we tour and the dearly departed. This is a great cemetery and it is an honor to have it as my first investigation in this region.

Every town needed a cemetery

Over the years the cemetery that became used at Empire City has been referred to as the “Empire Cemetery”, “New Empire Cemetery”, and the “New Brunswick Cemetery.” The choice of the little hill where the cemetery was located was likely seen as the natural place for it. At this elevated location, it would avoid the floods that were experienced when the Carson river overflowed its banks in the spring, putting it on higher ground and away from inundation. The graveyard was also out of the way of heavy freighting and teaming outfits that were often prone to accidents under their heavy loads. On the hill, the little burying ground remained a safe place, offering peace of mind to those whose friends and family rested there.

The “cemetery, which was originally called the Hillside Cemetery, is on a hill on the east side of what was Empire...” Ms. Cohen does not provide a source to evidence that the name was originally “Hillside Cemetery.” Cohen’s book, however, includes a copy of map of Empire City dated 1871, she received from Muriel Darling, which shows “Hillside Cemetery,” handwritten, at the east end of Empire city, north of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad tracks. The writing of the cemetery’s name does not match the writing of the street names, such as First Ave., Second Ave., etc. This may indicate that it was written on the map at a later date and by other than the surveyor. The land on which the cemetery is located is partof the Northwest quarter of the Northeast quarterof Section 11, Township 15 North, Range 20 East. This part of Section 11 and the South half of theNorthwest quarter of Section 11 were patented by the U.S. to S. H. (Samuel Huntington) Wright, onJune 10, 1871.

Rebecca Ambrose sold the remainder of the Ambrose lands at Empire City to her son Charles “Ab” Ambrose. There appears to have been a question as to the legitimacy of the title to the land in or around 1920. Contained in Eileen Cohen’s book on Empire City is a statement of explanation written by C. A. Ambrose of the “Ambrose Ranch and Town of Empire, Explaining the Town of Empire.” In this statement, Ambrose wrote that the“Ambrose Ranch was taken up in 1849 by Nicholas Ambrose, and owned and lived on by him until his death.” Ambrose continued:“On the Carson River in the year 1860, One half of one part of this land lying along where the railroad runs today was sold by him to Wm. Read, Stebbins and Hall. Record shows that a town was started in 1860.

Later on when Nevada became a State, and land was surveyed a patent was issued to Judge S. H. Wright, then District Judge for this District [Second Judicial District] for the people, and lots or Deeds to lots was given by him in the Town of Empire and money received for said lots were turned over to Mead, Stebbins, Hall and Ambrose from this part of the Ranch: all the balance that was left was Deeded to H. Ambrose by Judge Wright in one large tract that was claimed of and is today and has been since 1849 part of the Ambrose Ranch.

The process Ambrose describes is approximately the method for which federal Townsite Patents were issued by county or district judges. This might explain why S. H. Wright received a patent for land at Empire, except, according to the Bureau of Land Management the patent was not a Townsite Patent, but a Cash Entry sale. Had the patent been an actual federal Townsite Patent, by federal statute the judge would have had to hold out the land on which the cemetery was located for the benefit of the public. This provision of the law would have also applied to land on which a school had been built or any other publicly used lands, such as streets and highways.

Other than the fact of Wright’s land patent and the explanation given by Charles A. Ambrose, it remains unclear how title to the cemetery is now vested in the Carson City and County. Muriel Batesel great-great-granddaughter of S. E. Jones told Eileen Cohen that Jones “gave some of his land to the county including the cemetery and the adjoining property that became a mill site for processing sand and gravel.” This statement needs to be verified.

Those who rest in the Empire City Cemetery

According to this research, the earliest documented death resulting in burial at Empire may be those of Mary Ambrose, daughter of Nicholas and Rebecca Ambrose who, according to Eileen Cohen, died in 1858 and 1861, respectively. The earliest dated gravestone extant in the cemetery is that of little Agnes (Catherine) Williams, who died September 11 1866. Likely there may be even more graves unmarked in the grounds that date to these earliest of years. A “Cemetery Census” conducted in 1964 noted: “This is not a complete census, as upon viewing the cemetery, it is very obvious that there must be close to another 100 graves which are unmarked.” (This cemetery listing is on file at the LDS Family History Center, in Reno, Nevada.) This research reveals the names of some of those who may rest in unmarked and unknown graves, but does not identify all that may possibly have been buried here. Many of the town’s residents remained forever and are buried in the Empire City Cemetery.

Included among them are:

Nicholas Ambrose, considered to be the founder of Empire City

David Hiram Brown, served as Assemblyman from Humboldt County in the first Nevada State Legislature later serving two terms as Senator from Ormbsy County

Arthur Woods Morris, Deputy Secretary of State

F. D. Stadtmuller, secretary of the Board of State Capitol Commission that was tasked with building the new State Capitol Building in Carson City

S. E. Jones, Ormsby County Commissioner in 1883

Susan J. Isbell, daughter of Amos Burbank, for whom Burbank Canyonin Lyon County is named.

Former mill town of Empire was once Carson City’s biggest neighbor

NEVADA TRAVELER Richard Moreno

During the early days of Nevada’s famous Comstock mining district, the Carson River was the nearest source of water, which could be used to operate the mills that processed the rich gold and silver ore.

In the late 1850s and 1860s, a seven-mile stretch of the river between Dayton and Carson City became a nearly continuous string of mining mills.

A small community, known as Empire City (also called Empire), cropped up directly east of Carson City. Empire City was the site of the first Carson River mill in 1859 and within a few years had nearly 700 residents.

In Empire City’s early years, silver ore was brought to the mills by wagon. However, with the completion of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in 1870, the mills had a direct rail link to Virginia City’s mines.

Empire City also benefited from a thriving lumber industry. Timber that was cut on the slopes around Lake Tahoe would be transported by flume to the Carson River and floated downstream to Empire City, where it was cut and milled before heading to the Comstock to be used in the mines.

One of the most successful of the early mills was “Gregory’s Mill,” which is said to have been the first steam-powered mills in the Western Utah Territory (Nevada had not yet been created).

Additionally, Empire was the site of a handful of quartz mining operations. A large steam and water-powered quartz mill, the Mexican Mill, was built near the community in 1861.

Empire began to fade after about 1878, when its mills started to close due to lack of business (by that time, Virginia City and the Comstock’s mines were becoming tapped out). By the early 1900s, all of the mills were silent and most of Empire’s residents had moved on.

An historic marker on U.S. 50, a few miles east of Carson City, commemorates the spot where Empire City was once located. While little remains today, records indicate that the community once had a business district that stretched three-quarters of a mile.

The last tangible evidence that Empire City once existed is a small cemetery located south of U.S. 50, above the historic marker. To reach it, turn onto Deer Run Road and take the first right on Sheep Road. Directly behind the Waste Management facility (5560 Sheep Drive) is the site of a former concrete-manufacturing plant (only the foundation walls remain). Adjacent to the foundations is the entrance to the Empire Cemetery.

The old cemetery has dozens of well-maintained graves, many with substantial marble headstones and wrought iron fences. An estimated 200 people, most of whom died in the late 19th century, are buried in the cemetery.

From the cemetery, it is also possible to get an excellent overview of the nearby Carson River, as it winds south of Carson City.

One of Empire City’s most famous residents was Edwin Ewing Roberts (generally known as E.E. Roberts), who later became Nevada’s U.S. Congressman (the state only had one congressional representative prior to the 1980s). Late in his life, Roberts also served as one of Reno’s most popular mayors.

E.E. Roberts came to Nevada in 1897 to witness the heavyweight-boxing match between Jim Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons. He liked what he saw, particularly the libertarian views of most of the state’s residents, and took a teaching position in Empire City.

Two years later, Roberts passed the Nevada State Bar and was elected district attorney of Ormsby County (of which Carson City was the county seat). Ten years later, Roberts was elected as Nevada’s representative to Congress, an office he held until 1918.

After practicing law for a number of years—he specialized in divorce cases—Roberts returned to politics in 1923 with his election as Reno’s mayor.

During his term, he scandalized the nation, and amused Renoites by calling for an end to prohibition and enthusiastically endorsing the state’s legalization of gambling in 1931. He died in office in 1933 and is buried in Reno.
