The Gold Rush occurred in the 1840's and 1850's at this time many miners traveled from California to Nevada to build mining camps and mill sites. When Virginia City, Silver City and Gold Hill were mined a location would be needed to process the ore. The ore is rock which contained the gold and the silver. However ore processing allowed the ore to be separated from such precious metals so that it could then become a commodity which often led to wealth.

This would lead to stamp mills being built particularly along the Carson River one of the largest being the Rock Point Mill which was erected in 1861 in Dayton Nevada at the cost of $200,000. Back in the day that type of cost would be valued today probably at 1 Million Dollars. Dayton today may be one of the most historic mining communities in the state.

Charles C. Stevenson who was Nevada's governor from 1887 to 1890 had the mill built however it was owned by Hugh and J.R. Logan, James P. Holmes and a John Black. At the time it was built it was one of the largest mills in the country and definitely one of the largest stamp mills in this region. Although it would eventually change ownership to the Imperial Silver Mining Co. overtime it was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. This is the only mill site that has survived the wreck and decay of fifty years and still remains "The Rock Point Mill" according tot he NV Historical Society Newspaper in 1921!

The mill had two water wheels of over 100 horsepower that would power this industrial center by using the energy of the Carson River. The main building was 90' x 100'. It had 42 stamps and reduced about 50 tons of rock per day containing gold and silver. The water for the dam was brought at a distance of about 2,000' via log flume that was two feet wide and three feet deep. The dam was built out of stones and timber much like the rest of the mill. The wheels on the Carson River were about 16' and 13' in diameter with about 40 buckets to withhold the water. When the buckets were full it would contain about 6,000 pounds of river water which then could be used in the processing of the ore. At one time it also had train tracks that led right up to the front door of the mill which were removed when the ariel tram was constructed.

The mill would eventually be enlarged to having 56 stamps and a tram that ran from Gold Hill to the mill would care the ore over the mountain to be processed at this location. The man made lake where the water was held back by the dam no longer exist. However in its place the dry lake bed is now home to cottonwoods and a picnic area for those who want to explore the mills history.

In 1882 and 1909 the mill was destroyed in fires however both times it was rebuilt only each time more majestic then the last time. The second time it was rebuilt it they used galvanized iron. However by 1920 the mill would be dismantled and moved to Silver City leaving only remnants behind. From the 1920's till about the 1950's the mill site would be used as the dump until it was purchased by the state as a park and today the region is split into two regions. The first region is a very high desert wilderness full of canals and of course the Carson River. The second region is the mill site which contains two storage rooms built into the side of the hill, dam, mill site, mines, stone walls, water tower and foundations. Mary's tunnel which goes under Hwy. 50 unifies the two sectors so that they are connected without having to cross the busy road.

Today not much remains but old wooden ties, rebar protruding out from the cement foundations and stone walls. Many of the stairwells are made of stone found in the region. The original mill was one of the first of its kind to process ore found while mining the Comstock Lode thus it is a very sacred historical site even to this day. In comparison one can feel small when standing next to its walls and foundations.

Whether the mill itself is haunted or not that remains to be seen. The fact is fires killed people and back in the day more died trying to fight them. Dayton is a very old community it had its fair shares of tragedies which included a hanging not to far from this mill. My theory is that there may be energy present from its former glory but your more then likely to see here lizards, rats and rabbits then you are ghost.
